Tiny beach with lovely clear water. Restaurant has great food and a lovely balcony to sit on in the evening sun. Only downside is rather nasty poo/rotting smell on beach -- never discovered why!! You can walk there from Loutro past amazing ruins and lots of goats. Or you can canoe round if you are feeling energetic!

Room Tip: I didn't stay here -- just visited the beach and restaurant

The hotel is in a lovely quiet bay 10 minutes by boat from Loutro. It is better to stay here than in Loutro which is crowded and noisy, but it is possible to find more authentic experiences elsewhere. You are a trapped audience and you get the feeling that their main concern is to make as much money from you as possible. For example, even if you stay at the hotel they still charge you extra for the use of the sunbeds. The service isn't very friendly and there is the feeling they want to finish with you and move on to the next customers. Even picking you up from Loutro seems a hassle for them.
The hotel is popular but I wonder for how long? Why not have a look at the Small Paradise guestrooms in Likos Bay.

I just cannot understand the negative reviews for this place - it is amazing. We were initially booked into a hotel in Loutro. After staying in a beautiful hotel in Chania Town I wanted to cry when I saw the place we had booked. It was beyond basic and not particularly clean. Loutro was also a huge disappointment. It's just a waterfront of tavernas and hotels and feels quite down market. We were there during the world cup and every taverna had a giant TV screen. On our second day in Loutro we went for a walk and happened upon Finix bay and the Old Phoenix. We simply loved it and spent the day there swimming and relaxing on the small, uncrowded beach. After enjoying an amazing lunch we decided to check out of our hotel in Loutro and spend the rest of our holiday at the Old Phoenix. Yes, the room was basic but compared to the one in Loutro it was bliss! And as for a previous reviewer complaining about the lack of TV - when you stay someone this beautiful why on earth would you want to watch TV?!! The room was large and bright with a fantastic view. The food at the Old Phoenix is terrific, I'm a vegetarian and loved all the meals we had in Crete, the Cretan salad here was a real highlight and discovering they make their own cheese explains it, the Feta was outstanding. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful and overall this place is fantastic value for money. 40 euros a night for what feels like an exclusive resort. We are already planning to go back next year and I cannot wait!!

This is the second visit here. We were staying in The north of the island and came here with friends for 1 night. The accommodation is spotlessly clean but very basic. Food and drink excellent and very inexpensive. We used the sun beds and canoes for which there is a small charge but well worth every penny. A very relaxing and peaceful place.

This is an idyllic peaceful setting in a small pebbly bay on the southern coast of Crete overlooking the Libyan sea with a mountain backdrop and the gentle sound of the sea, goat bells and the occasional cry of birds of prey. Be aware that the bay is facing southwest, the predominant direction of the wind, which at times can be strong and cold in May (but could be refreshing in mid summer). The Old Phoenix hotel, is indeed, old and the facilities are basic (i.e no room TV or coffee making facilities with poor showers and old blankets). Having seen it advertised in the UK Telegraph, our initial feeling was one of disappointment, particularly as the 'hotel' is NOT located in Loutro per se, as the address implies, but rather a short boat ride away (unpleasant in a roughish sea). The hotel does, however, collect you using the small boat from Loutro when you phone but be aware that you need to use their land line phone as the mobile signal at the hotel is very weak and directional, as is the wifi. The welcome/atmosphere is pleasant enough but not typically Greek, as the Greek owners (4 brothers) stay in the background employing other nationalities to carry out most of the contact duties with guests. Our initial disappointment changed when at dinner (there is no other place to eat) we found ourselves among an extremely interesting mix of talented artists, musicians, medics, therapists and the like. We are told by regulars that this is usually the case. The walks in either direction are stoney but relatively easy, either back to Loutro (20 min) or to lovely bays to the west, both of which have clearer waters. Worth a visit to the west is Nikos taverna/small hotel. One unbelievably walks through a shepherds yard (there is no info sign) with an abundance of goats and, looking down to the sea, secreted away there is a most amazing micro hotel with a wonderful Greek welcome, great food, wine, beach and all the relaxation one could wish for. The food at the old Phoenix is excellent and freshly made each day and very reasonably priced (22 Euros for a meal for two with wine and Raki to follow). In short, we found total peace and tranquility here in accommodation that badly needs updating but with an extremely interesting mix of people...in this sense it reminded us of a milder version of the Marigold hotel (for those that have seen and enjoyed the film).

We stayed here and we loved it. The hotel was clean, simple, the food was fresh and absolutely fantastic; the staff attentive yet not pushy. It is ideally situated for hiking and reaching some of the best and uncrowded beaches in the area. We appreciate that when we were there it was not high season, even so the hotel was full and the staff coped with ease. Contrary to the last 2 reviews, we found this place exactly as we had hoped. It is clear from the photos and other reviews that have been posted that there are a number of hotels in the area so it is likely there will be a few people around.

Room Tip: Our room was in the main hotel building, which we preferred

Had to do this area...just had to...but yes you ARE a captured audience and unfortunately that is something I cannot bear nor bad attitude and service.
Our waiter raised his eyes to the heavens after a few seconds of serving us 6 girls, admittedly there was some ummings and ahhings but mainly because everything we chose was "off" so the waiter became the menu, tired of us easily and declared there were people waiting to be served in the large ambienceless canteen .
I decided to forego eating that night and indeedy did not do so the 2 days of our stay,in fact I would have been happy to leave immediately.
If the service had been friendly then I could have ignored the cold water in the shower , the mardy lift both ways and to cap it all our friend being chastised for bumping her too heavy case down the stairs which may have disturbed their new very young very noisy gangs of twenty something guests....final straw of the final straw a cheek and disrespectful to us older uns.
The Phoenix seems to still be owned by a Greek family but staffed by Albanians...a race the Greeks purport to dislike anyway.
The next day we scoured Loutro for the best place to eat on our last night and one where we could get a lift back the short distance to Finix as we in fact had a disabled friend with us,6 of us to come to eat didnt cause a ripple in this gorgeous place not one taverna was interested.
I found on the internet, only available in the canteena at Finix, a nearby taverna which we surely should have stayed at in the bay next door,Likkos, where no thing was too much trouble.
As I live on Crete anyway I am hoping to visit Likkos once again before the season ends.
Cars can be seen by the grounds of the Finix at the edge of Loutro and indeed in Likkos Bay and there is a road in them there hills so nothing is as authentic as it seems.

Room Tip: ...go elsewhere......
