I was there for one week at the end of July - beginning of August 2008.
To summarize - I would stay there next time as it is very nice. I had absolutely no complaints. My age – 31.
The exact location of the hotel in Google maps:
The hotel is not very big, you get relatively personal attitude, not overcrowded, very clean and tidy. Very nice and green yard/garden with the good size and with swimming pool, where you can find the shadow under the palms in the middle of the hot day when beach could get too hot. Swimming pool is clear and large enough to not feel squeezed, the depth varies between 1.50 to 3.00 m. And there is separate children pool next to the big one. Although the sea is 200-300 m away, swimming pool can be and was important as the sea on the north coast of the Crete was very waving at the week of our stay, with red flag on the masts of the beaches, which means – no normal swimming in the sea. Beach patrol guys were calling out anyone who was noticed trying to get inside the sea. Also the other not so nice fact about the sea – several times I stepped into the small oil spots while walking near the waves. Possibly if the sea would be calm, there would not be such problem.
In a hotel yard there is an area to play volleyball (no one used it during the week :), ping pong, billiard. There are small gates on the sides of the big pool, so you can play a ball in the pool. Food was nice with plenty of choice during the breakfast and dinner. Price for the 0.5 l of local wine in the evening was 4 or 5 EUR. Glass of fanta, juice etc 2 EUR.
The beach is some 200-300 m away. Directly on the nearby beach there is nice taverna (River) where you can have a glass of wine while watching the sunset (alternative to the hotel) with the price 4 EUR for 0.5 l or eat a lunch if not all inclusive. We walked to the downtown of the Rethymno once by the beach. It took less than a hour with photo stops etc. Google maps shows that distance to the Rethymno downtown is 3.4 km (by the beach). There are public buses each 30 minutes from/to downtown. It costs 0.90 EUR to one end. It takes may be some 20-30 minutes in the high season busy hours by bus to the Rethymno bus station. Certainly less if going to the nearest part of the city as the streets in the middle of the city is the bottleneck for the bus.
The staff in the hotel is very understanding and tries to make their clients as happy as possible satisfying sometime some extra requests (late dinners, early breakfasts) which they could easily ignore.
We stayed in the room with a window to the street side (small front yard). As this was hot season the door to the loggia stayed closed all the time and air-conditioning (included in the price) was used to cool down the room. So the noise was not the problem. It could be, if you wish to leave the window open for some reason during the night. If you get the room to the inner yard, there should not be any problems as the yard if very quiet. Otherwise I think the side of the room does not make big difference, as you are outside most of the time.
The guests are mostly families, young couples. Guests were not loud. Lot of Germans, some Polish people, some others.
On one Thursday there was folk evening with 2 local dance couples, the guests were involved in Sirtaki dance etc. On other Thursday evening the barbeque was announced.
To the Heraklion the public bus passes the hotel nearly every hour. It took a bit more than a hour to the one end and 11 EUR per person (round trip ticket). Nearest activities (more tavernas, bars, shops, etc) are taking part in Platanias town, which is some 5-10 minutes walk from the hotel away from the Rethymno.
Overall the hotel itself is calm and quiet and I definitely recommend it to anyone, may be except some absolute party people (however Rethymno downtown is easily reachable).
