“Cozy place”

Utopia is i friendly place situated at the best part of Lamai. Breakfast is simple, but then again it's not that important. We stayed at Utopia two times during the holiday. The smallest rooms (21, 22 and 23 should be avoided, but room nb 24 and 25 were ok). The rooms were cheap. Only 800 B per night - with AC and TV. Clean bed and towels. Of course there are prettyer rooms, but we thought it was ok. The restaurant at Utopia isn't any good, so you should eat elsewhere. The Lonely Planet guide does recomment several other nice places. The night marked is just a short walk from the hotel where you can get fresh and cheap food.

Although we returned from this holiday nearly a year ago, the memories are still fresh in my mind. Well, what a great first impression of the island, when we got out of the airport (air-conditioned), a wave of heat blasted us, and we knew it was going to be an excellent two weeks of fun in the sun. We stayed at Utopia beach resort, which is made up of about twenty to thirty bungalows. We stayed in the beachfront bungalow, which happened to be only ten meters from the water, awesome! As it was low season on the island, the beach was hardly ever crowded, and the weather was always great (apart from one particularly stormy night!). The best thing about Hat Lamai, after the water, is the numerous salespeople wandering up and down the beach, looking for buyers. They ranged from jewellery to carpets, and many, many foods. When we arrived, we were greeted by my grandparents, who had already made friends with a pleasant ice-cream seller, who, every afternoon of our stay would come up to our usual beach spot at four and sell us ice-creams. In the time of my stay, i had also managed to make friends with a lady who sold donuts, a man who sold the most delicious mangoes and another man who sold hats. My work was cut out for me! If you are ever in Lamai and looking for something local to eat, then I would suggest going to the Lamai food carts, located right next to the lady boxing bars. There is a delicious variety of local and western-style foods, all for 20-30 Baht per dish! For travelling Aussies, there is an Aussie bar situated just up the road from the trolleys. It has live AFL broadcast and a pool table and dart board. For sightseeing, we hired a car and drove around the island. Our first stop was the Butterfly park, with a beautiful garden setting and a massive array of butterflies, it makes for a photogenic tour stop! Our next stop was to pay a visit to the mummified monk at Wat Khunaram. This monk has been well preserved for over twenty years! We had many other stops, but the one stop i liked the most was at the iconic big buddha, a huge, gold buddha. Our final stop was at Nathon, the main town of koh samui. Slightly busier than Chaweng or Lamai, Nathon is the stop for a bite to eat, shopping or just a general look-around. In conclusion, Koh Samui, Thailand, is an ideal getaway for travel with the family or just on your own. There is a diverse range of cultures and people, all mixed into this one little island of paradise. I hope you found this interesting.

Staff friendly, accommodation basic and not the cleanest bathrooms. Good location but Samui wasn't our fave place to stay in Thailand. Pay the extra and go up market for this location. Our Bungalow had a tv and fridge. Good for a few nights stay but not for a weeks holiday - No Frills but Right on a quite bit of the beach.

We love this place so much that we have stayed here 3 times since June 2007.

June 2007 - we were recommended to stay in Lamai Beach by some friends and checked the Lonely Planet for some ideas about accommodation and picked the Utopia as it sounded ok. We rocked up and chose the cheapest room available as we were backpacking and were on limited funds. After 2 nights of not sleeping as the fan wasn't enough to keep us cool, we upgraded to the Super Deluxe Room which had air con and hot water. True luxury for a bargain basement price. The resort is located on the beachfront down what we would consider, the quieter and nicer end of Lamai Beach. What absolute bliss...waking up each morning and walking down to the beachside restaurant for our breakfast before heading off for a swim. We didn't want for anything. We ended up staying for over a week - well over our two night plan. The food was great and the location superb - what more could you want for?

May 2008 - headed back to the Utopia for another two nights and requested our same room as before - Room Number 7. Another blissful time and nice to see that they had built a new reception area which looks very professional. The receptionist remembered us from the previous year which was really lovely.

August 2008 - back again and this time with all of our family in tow as we got married in Koh Samui. We booked 6 rooms for our family and they all raved about the place. They are already planning their trips back to the Utopia. My Dad who is very fussy and usually goes for 4-5 star hotels, thought the Utopia was fabulous and believed that we had found a little gem.

We are firm believers in you get what you pay for and if you want a luxurious beach stay then this isn't the place for you. We just love the fact that we are right on the beach and that "our room" is comfortable and spacious for a very cheap price. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and we will be returning again and again.

Thanks Utopia.

  • Liked — Location, Friendly Staff and Price
  • Disliked — Beds are a little hard and pillows are a little lumpy - very minor issues!
