“Beach hut right on the beach, just dont expect a smile!”
Reviewed 13 April 2011

We stayed for 3 nights in Feb 2011 in one of the huts right on the beach for 600 baht and it was so nice to wake up every morning and step right out on to the beach. Although I found the waves a bit noisy to sleep well-but I cant really complain about that seeing as we choose the ones right on the beach! The huts are basic but its what I would expect for the money and made it feel all the more authentic, especially as we shared our bungalow with a massive gecko for 3 nights! Bad points are that is it quite a walk from the busy part of Lamai but that does mean that the beach is nice and quiet, and we found the sea lovely unlike some of the other reviews. Couldnt fault the beach at all. The food at the restaurant was lovely-however service very slow and rarely with a smile. In fact found service quite bad accross whole of Thailand which is frustrating now the prices are a lot more expensive. Would def recommend New Hut though if you want a proper beach hut a few steps from the sea. I would stay again, hopefully without the house gecko!

Moved to New Huts in Lamai Beach after staying elsewhere on the island, just walked in and asked for a room.

They gave us a hut for 3 of us, a double and a single bed. With fans for both to keep you cool and mosquito nets round the beds. Came en-suite with shower and toilet. It was cold water but doesn't matter to much when your in the hot all day

Restaurant a-joining the bungalows serves awesome cheap food and have a massive fridge which is always full of beers and soft drinks.

All the staff were friendly and helpful. The place was awesome. It was a 10 minute walk to all the bars in Lamai and 10 minutes to Asda. Yes they have a Asda in Koh Samui.

The best thing about this place was getting up in the morning and walking straight into the sea.

I think between the 3 of us we paid £4 a night each

Definitely a great place to stay

Really cheap accomodation on Lamai Beach.

Tidy and clean, but extremely small huts, no A/C or hot water.

No pool here, Beach is too dirty at this end to swim, as a poluted river comes out quite close.

Restaurant cheap but food isn't great, ordered a Green Curry with Chicken - you'd think they could get that right being their signature dish. Was probably the worst Green Curry I've had in Thailand.

Huts are right on the beach although almost a kilometres walk to the central part of the beach where the action goes down.

A sign reminding you that if you leave and forget to pay for your drinks you will be charged 50 times the owing amount is a little disconcerting, and another line "Remember this is an Island" giving you the feeling they will hunt you down if they feel oyu havent left the rooms in tip top condition is also a little strange! Don't get me wrong, I'm not out to steal drinks and damage rooms, but is it neccesary to say such things to tourists who pay the staffs wages? I think not.

The bungalows cost around 400 - 500 baht a night, I would suggest you fork out a bit more and stay at Lamai Wanta Resort, a great spot in the centre of the beach with an amazing pool.

We arrived from staying in Chaweng beach for 2 nights and it was such a nice relief to be away from all the hustle and bustle. New Hut is a little out of the way from the Lamai 'town' and admittedly it was quite scary as two young ladies (20 & 21) walking there at night. But at New Hut it was so easy to make friends and it didn't become a problem.
We stayed in a beach front hut with a fan and shared bathroom and toilet for 350 baht a night, it was VERY basic but waking up to the view of palm trees, white sand and clear sea make up for the lack of room/ hotness.
The showers and toilets were modern(ish) and always clean.. although it is kinda annoying walking back to your hut after showering and getting sand all over your feet and legs. The downside to new hut is that the sand does get everywhere.. but what do you expect really from staying right on the beach.
The restaurant is nice enough.. not too expensive, but i reccommend at night eating at the street vendors in town. The food is so cheap and so much tastier.
We only planned to stay at New Hut 3 nights but ended up staying 6 nights.. we got stuck in a 'New Hut bubble' and made so many friends there that made it so enjoyable. I highly reccommend!

The place itself is OK. A bit far from the center of the city Lamai. Nice Bungalows but nothing really special. The beach is not good at all, especially the water is dirty as a river revers close. The stuff speak a little bit of English , but if something happen there, do not expect to fix it with them, they will not understand you, or maybe they pretend not to understand... We staid there first 2 night, then we decided to stay 2 more and finally one more as we didn't want to go around and find other accommodations. It was too busy of tourists and we didn't want to waste our time... We asked for change the sheets and a new roll, and the answer after 4 days staying there was: if you want, you must pay more. And they will chose the price... Sure, it is not the place I would recommend to anybody. Poor service, far, not friendly, not nice beach. If somebody would ask me for an accommodation there in Lamai, I will say there are so many other places better than that for the same price or just a little bit more...

First of all - to get to the 'resort' you need to cross the walkbridge over the river/canal - DO NOT be put off by the look of the backside of the establishment - its just the way people do they work there and you have the chance to see the backsides of other restaurants and households. Go straight to the restaurant and order cocoshake and roll down on the beach... Its the stay work every penny.

We stayed there for 5 nights at rate of 360 Baht/per night. For that price we got nice and clean bungalow right on the beach. Be aware that conditions on the bungalow are basic but nice, clean and neat (no hot water in the shower but bed is comfy, mosquito net as new, bungalow looks new, well built and maintained properly). From what we found out, this was quite new establishment so infrastructure is still not ruined and everything does what it says on the tin. For that small price you get the location you could only dream of in Lamai. Its maybe 10-15min beach walk from the centre but therefore is quiet and really enjoyable.

Now comes the best bit - restaurant. The food there was the best we had on our 3 weeks trip, coctails are most delicious. And the prices are from the bottom scale! Restaurants porch overlooks beach and sunrise - eating there a meal early in the morning or at night when full moon - its a real tropical, holiday, experience. Only downside is staff - they don't look too spontanious but they do their job well and overall are friendly - just give them a chance! :)

What we didnt like? Staff could do more with some smile and learn bit more english to get those meals orders right ;) We had a snake in our bungalow - but hey, its Thailand and it happens there - room service got rid of it for us in 15 min by catching it in the bag. Apart from that - best value for money in Lamai.

Beach is beautifull and neigbours are high rated resorts. Lamai itself offers you everything. If you are a biker, like us, there are good places to rent a proper motorcycle at fantastic prices - we definitely recommend one - run by a chap from Milton Keynes! :)

Overall - if we ever come back on Koh Samui - New Hut Bungalows will be the place where we stay or at least pop in for a meal!

Please note - didn't expect any luxuries in bungalows. We just wanted to try how is it to spend few nights in a charming bungalow on the beach and it worked 100%. As far as I remember they gave it good review in Lonely Planet guide - and I put my signature down as well.
