“can't complain”
Reviewed 29 September 2013

This place is one of the best we have stayed at on our backpacking travels. For the price of the rooms you definitely cannot complain. The hotel is right near the beach and the Swing Bar which is a very entertaining bar. The rooms were basic but had hot shower, safe, tv and good free wifi. The front desk girls were very helpful with getting us some mopeds and booking our bus tickets to Bangkok. If you are looking for a cheap place to stay on the beach in Koh Samui this is a very good option.

Room Tip: the deluxe rooms are a lot larger than the standard rooms

I stayed here for 16 nights during September and found the hotel, overall, very good. The staff were extremely helpful, the rooms were kept in a good condition and the hotel's location is ideal - right on the beach front and just a 5 minute walk from many restaurant and bars. The only issues we had was that we had no control over our shower temperature and there was a slight ant problem towards the end of our stay. Other than these things, the stay was very enjoyable. A highly recommended hotel.

I came here for 4 nights and stayed 4 weeks. In fact the only reason I have to leave is a visa run.

What I love about it: it's right on the beach, central in Lamai. So you have the most fantastic beach in front, and the life of Lamai behind. I was expecting a room without window but not a bit of it. Huge room, massive king size bed, very nice bathroom by Thai standards, fridge in the room with a freezer compartment. It's literally right by the beach so you get loungers for free and fantastic sea. All this for £8 a night because I stayed longer with a discount.

The restaurant is great. I didn't do their big breakfast because I went to the bikini bar for that (slightly greasy) and there's an eat-what-you want joint 50 metres away too for 250 baht. However, the Swing restaurant also does great breakfast: the 3 egg omelette and toast for 80baht is very good. Where the restaurant really scores is on lunches and dinner. The Pad Thai is fab and cheap. You can get Pad Thai in the street food market but it's much oilier. Swing bar is also a bigger quantity. The Green and Masaman curries are to die for and cheap, and the basil, garlic and chilli too. If you like European food then I think it's much better than some of the others nearby with new chefs in place, including a European.

OK, to those in the far past who posted unfavourable reviews, this place has clearly gone on improving and remember it's a hotel for £10 a night, or less if you stay longer. Sure if you leave food out in the room you'll get the tiny ants. So, erm, put the food in the fridge? The cleaning staff are a bit grumpy but that's probably not surprising. Rest of the staff are great. Alain, one of the partners, is a star. Incredibly helpful.

Next time I would probably do aircon not fan because Samui is warm! Otherwise, I've travelled a lot in Thailand and this is exceptional value: remember you are getting a hotel, not a hostel, right on a stunning beach for £10 a night or less. Value!

Room Tip: Aircon is worth considering If you have a room on the east side watch out for night club noise some...

My husband and our son stayed here for 10 days in July. The staff were awesome, always had a smile, very friendly and extremely helpful!! Always willing to help me book tours or arrange for a cab, even when they were very busy, we were helped within minutes. Location was fabulous, right across the road from the amazing Swing Bar, which is on the perfect beach!! We never really needed to leave as we had access to massage, vendors, food, drinks, fly boarding, jet ski, shisha, the fireshow (which is amazing!!) and a great lounging area with beach chairs, umbrellas and tables. Rich Resort was in the greatest location as we had access to Walking street with all the shopping and restaurants and bars you could ever need!! The rooms were spacious, with or without a/c and were kept clean. Had everything you need for a beach holiday. I was able to drop off and pick up my key from the desk many times a day and never felt it was an inconvenience. We truly enjoyed our holiday here and were all very sad to go!! We cant wait until we return in April!! Ryan, Amber & Kane

This hotel is definitely a great hotel for budget Travelers. The price and the location are the main main advantages. The rooms were for the most part very clean and have all the basic necessities with TV, hot wAter shower, free drinking water and mini safe, free wifi. The staff in both the reception and restaurant were friendly and helpful. I will definitely visit Rich Resort again on my travels next year to Thailand.

Yes our hotel is a good hotel for budget travelers for sure. Thanks for making that point and thanks for making a review. We cater to a lot of backpackers and budget travelers because our prices are very affordable for the product you get and the location. Yes all the basic necessities are there for a very cheap price which is why we have a very high occupancy rate year round so book your rooms early if you are planning to visit us again to avoid disappointment. Also lovely to hear that the staff treated you well.
We appreciate your feedback and see you next year!

Look, we've been backpackers for 18 months, generally staying in hostels and guesthouses, so we aren't really picky as long as the basics are met.. however...

Ate at the Swing Restaurant on our first night and it gave us FOOD POSIONING!! We know it must've been this food as we hadn't eaten anything since a light breakfast after a long journey from Krabi to Koh Samui. We therefore spent all day in the room the, all night and day, VERY ILL.

When speaking to the hotel reception and restaurant about this they were very doubting and unhelpful. The receptionist was downright rude. When I requested that we be allowed to stay another night at a slightly discounted rate I was told "no" outright by the receptionist without her consulting a manager. We were told to come back at 4pm (this being 10am) to speak to the restaurant manager (fob off?) who told us that ACTUALLY he had eaten the same food as us the previous day (a convenient argument?) and he felt fine.

The room itself was also very disappointing. The bathroom door would not shut, the bed was very hard and uncomfortable, there were ants everywhere (including on the bed!) and I woke up both mornings with insect bites :(

The wifi was also very hit and miss due to maintenance - this is why it is currently free as explained on signs in reception (you'll notice they advertise free wifi WITHOUT explaining this reason - it often simply doesn't work at all).

The water also went off for about 5 hours on our second morning which is possibly the worst thing ever when you have food poisoning :(

When checking out, the receptionist demanded that we give back a 10% VIP discount card for the restaurant which we were never given in the first place! We wouldn't eat there again if you paid us so I don't know why she was so concerned about this! Her exact words on check in were "We can give you a VIP card once you've put your stuff away - or show your room key instead for discount" - we just showed our key as per her instructions. Eventually, after the staff had all talked it out amongst themselves, they reluctantly gave us our 500baht key deposit back and gave a huff and a goodbye.

Pretty much the worst place we've stayed so far in Thailand and would NEVER stay again! AVOID THE RESTAURANT ESPECIALLY AT ALL COSTS!

Lovely location, price is good and it's awesome that the bar reaches right out onto the beach. But with food poisoning confining us to an internet-less, ant-ridden room without running water means you can't enjoy ANY of that. Then to find that your legitimate complaints are considered a pest to be met defensively... Awful, just awful.

Hello and thank you for providing us with your review. It is good to hear that you found the location to good and the price right.
Sorry to hear about the food poisoning although after some research I found that most sources put the onset of food poisoning at between 6 to 72 hours, This makes it difficult to say for sure that the source of the food poisoning was our restaurant/bar. This is also the first time I have heard of or seen a review regarding food poisoning coming from our restaurant/bar. If the food poisoning did come from our food we are definitely sorry and hope that it didn't affect your vacation too much.

In regards to the room, sorry to hear that you found the bed to be hard. We had previous complaints about this and purchased high quality 2 inch bed toppers for all the beds last year and haven't had a complaint since. Sorry also to hear about the ants. if you have stayed in Thailand long you will know that the ants in Thailand will appear out of nowhere if there is any food or crumbs left out. If this wasn't the case it may have been because our usual environmentally friendly exterminator couldn't get into the rooms during August since the occupancy was running at 96%. average. Now that the occupancy has dropped a bit we have been able to get into the rooms. Really sorry about those little critters.

Sorry, yes the WiFi does go out sometimes intermittently.... we have 2 providers but sometimes they both go down at the same time...this is Thailand. In regards, to the water problem I am not sure what happened there but we will look into the case.

Once again, thanks for your review and we welcome all reviews, both positive and negative as we strive to make our establishment and service better.
