“The small details”
Reviewed 1 October 2013

We stayed at the Ammatara last weekend for my wife's birthday, I had chosen the resort for a romantic getaway and was blown away by how fantastic the villas are. Their website doesnt give you any sense about how big the villas are inside - they are huge!

Every detail is so carefully thought out from the spa bath being filled up and ready to use straight away to the complimentary daily activities to the dvd rental service, the list goes on. It is obvious that someone has poured their heart and soul into the villas - they are very unique and maybe not to everybodys exact taste but bland is not a word you can use in any part of this resort and for me that is a major reason to visit again in the future.

The beach deserves a special mention as for me the area directly in front of the resort and to the right is the nicest on the whole island with white sand, crystal clear water and huge granite boulders - you could be sat in the seychelles or the caribbean except you can eat in a little beachside restaurant next door for £2-3 each.

Room Tip: I would upgrade to a sea view villa if travelling as a couple as these are more private.

We chose this hotel based on the privacy of our own pool. Private it definately was. Over the 5 days we saw at most 5 other couples throughout the hotel.
The room was spacious with high ceilings and a fan over the bed. Aircon was perfectly cool also. The bed was big and comfy with plenty of pillows. You had to jump up to get in it.
Kitchenette was handy, although the coffee wasnt the best. We ended up buying some from the 7 11 across the road. Coffee at breakfast was perfect!!
The bathroom and shower are beautiful, and a toilet fit for a king. The bathtub inside the airconditioned room was also very luxurious, just that it takes a while to fill.
Our private pool was cold to jump into but perfect to cool you down from the hot air. It was very clean, and the outdoor sunloungers light enough to move around if youre chasing the sun, or undercover if you prefer the shade.
The cleaners (5 of them at once) would come in for 30mins, you could hang out in the pool while they do their thing, a big plus if you didnt want to leave the room or feel uncomfortable with them cleaning around you.
Room service was really quick, they are better at local food rather than international stuff, but in saying that the burgers and fries are pretty good. The local food in the restaurant is pretty authentic and reasonably priced. Id recommend a romantic dinner over the pond on either side of the bar if that's what you're into.
Happy hour with Krit was fun, playing Jenga at the bar. A good excuse to leave the room.
We really enjoyed our stay, and look forward to next time
Tip- if heading out to town go onto the beach and cut through the hotel next door onto the main strip. This will save you the long walk up and down the cobblestones to the main entrance of the hotel.

Room Tip: We chose a beachside, less view, but was closer to the beach and bar, and the pool was more private

We had a lovely stay at Ammatara Pura for 2 nights in August. This is a 5 star boutique property consisting of just 18 beautifully appointed pool villas. The resort opened in 2012 and was built, with meticulous attention to detail to resemble an ancient Thai palace, with pieces of art on display, collected from all corners of the Thai kingdom and beautifully landscaped gardens that give an air of peacefulness and tranquility. The villas themselves are huge, really grand and impressive, and beautifully appointed, tastefully decorated in traditional Thai fashion with enormous bathroom with a large jacuzzi and a further room with outdoor rain shower, plus mod cons, such as washing machine, coffee machine and microwave, etc., in the kitchen, writing desk and PC, flat screen TV and DVD player and I-Pod docking station – they really do think of everything! Ammatara Pura has a lovely calm and relaxed feel about it and is well located on the best part of lovely Lamai beach, yet only 5 minutes walk from shops, bars and restaurants, the property also lay on free transportation by tuk tuk. The staff are friendly, relaxed and welcoming offering an efficient service throughout to make sure that your stay is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Finally the food is delicious, a mixture of Thai and International – dinner can be enjoyed al fresco in a stunning setting next to the beach and the whole resort has a great atmosphere and ambience at night. Only negative was that we wished we could have stayed longer!

We are seasoned travellers and have stayed at many well appointed hotels around the world. If you want the best stay in Lamai then you have to stay here. The sea view pool villas are amazing! The staff are super friendly and try very hard to make your stay as comfortable as possible. You will not want to leave your room and private pool as they are beautifully appointed with all modern conveniences. The beach out the front is clean and beautiful. We cant wait to go back there again and stay longer. We cant recommend these villas enough.

Room Tip: Any of the sea view villas would be a must.

This time we have been quite dissapointed with our visit to Thailand. It was our fourth visit and most probably three times was more than enough. We didn't book anything in advance like always, but unlike in previous times most of the hotels were either fully booked or had vacancies for just couple of days. The initial plan was to stay either at koh phangan or koh tao, but the room availability was also very limited on these islands. And also by that time we were tired of moving around (Bangkok, Krabi). So, Lamai was decided to be the place of our relax period of vacation. We stopped for three nights at the Weekender resort, which was really horrible, but that's in my other review at the resort's page. One of these three days we were walking along the Lamai beach and noticed a neat line of Arab type palm trees with just 8 or 10 sunbeds at the beach in front. We haven't seen this three or 5 years ago, so we decided to take a look. Walked in, and were absolutely amazed with the surroundings. My first attitude was: "wow, this is like a museum". And not a single tourist on the property. I told my wife that this was probably because the resort is overpriced and we finally ended up at the reception. The prices were high, but the surroundings seemed to be worth it. And surprisingly they had available rooms. So we booked the one of the villas for the remaining 13 days and it was the right choice.

The rooms are very spacious and beautifully decorated. A lot of gold but not too much. Our daughter after all the previous resorts couldn't believe that this was the actual room that we were to stay at)). In the room everything was nice. I am not going to be too detailed about that. It is actually a lot nicer in reality, than it is on the pictures. The private pool and the terrace also spectacular. But the best thing about the resort is that it has only 18 villas and what you receive is a very calm atmosphere with no people around you. Even if you decide to go the the main pool, most of the time it becomes your private main pool, because no one is there, even with most of the rooms filled.

The restaurant where they serve breakfast is very clean and there is none of this typical feeling of "dirty" that we got at most Thai restaurants in Thailand. I don't mean Bangkok with some of its fancy restaurants, but these other small ones that you get at the resorts like koh Samui.

The prices at the resort restaurant are high. Three times higher than on the street. So we tried it once and decided that it was not worth overpaying. Most of the time we ate at the salathai restaurant on the main beach road. That one is also very nice but not as expensive as the resort's restaurant.

Overall we were very pleased with the place and our stay, but there are some negatives that I just wanted to mention. And most probably these negatives are the reason why this resort is still affordable. If they manage to deal with those they can set the prices at a higher level.

The service. Doesn't quite correspond to its fancy surroundings. It seems that most of the staff is not trained for a 5 star service approach. Some of them don't even greet you, when you pass by. Most of the staff is average, the same as you get at a 3 star hotel. Some of the people are nice, but it is just a few and unfortunately I don't remember their names. It is a girl who is responsible for the activities and a European guy at the front desk. Also one of the new guys they hired and he was serving breakfast with the other girls. Who actually are not as nice, they try, but it just doesn't go naturally and most of the time it seems that they hate you.

The other thing. We stayed at the right wing if you look at the hotel from the beach. And most of the time when you relax outside on your beautiful terrace you are forced to inhale something that feels like someone is burning something. The smell is coming from outside, the farthest right corner behind the fence. Nobody is burning anything, but it seems like there's some type of a system that works on gasoline that is being burnt and this you have to breathe with during your stay. Sometimes it was really bad, sometimes ok, but it definitely spoiled the experience. They have to do something about it. When you are in a hotel like that you really want to smell fresh air or the flowers, but not the burning or gasoline products.

The staff tuc-tuc is another annoying thing. It makes too much noise cruisng around the territory during all day and evenings. The area is not that big, so I believe staff can either walk or use some type of a motor-free cart or pull type cart to if they need to carry something heavy. It is a drawback, which I believe could be easily resolved with an electric golf-cart.

The resort is fairly new, but the some of the things around seem shabby, as if the resort is 5-6 years old...

But hey!! You start to notice this only if you are on a long stay))) if you stay for two or three days you would probably have a great experience.

This hotel was like a savior for us! It is the best thing you can experience and find on Lamai. The pavilion hotel, another boutique resort is very crowded. Does not correspond with boutique to me.

Dear Ruslan K,
Thank you for choosing Ammatarapura for your recent stay in Koh Samui, Thailand.
We also appreciate that you have taken out some time to put your reviews about our property here.
Certain things we would like to clarify on the context of your comments.
As you felt that our restaurant is expensive; we would let you know that we are a five star resort and to maintain those standards, emphasizing on food safety and using A grade quality products which are expensive, we need to keep our pricing higher than those small standalone shacks/restaurants on the street where quality and food safety might not be a concern.
About the burnt gasoline kind of smell in the air, we do regret any inconvenience and also let you know it is feasible for us to control when the reason for something like that is happening within our property. But if it is happening somewhere else outside our property limits, and such smell is carried by the wind, we are sorry to say that we don't have any control over that.
And finally about the breakfast service; we apologize if you have not felt it comfortable to your desired levels. We have noted on that and will find out and rectify any wrongs with our restaurant service team . Assured that you will not have any such disappointments on your next visit.
Our team at Ammatarapura has always been reaching out to our valuable guests and are ready to go an extra mile to ensure ultimate comfort for them.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Arijit Ghosh

This has to be one of the best hotels I have stayed at to date. My wife and son were traveling with me and ask thee of us were thoroughly impressed by the service, food quality and expecially the suites. We had our own pool, veranda and an absolutely amazing suite. Lots of privacy, yet beautiful views overlooking the palm trees to the ocean.
Lamai beach was clean and very few pedlars hassling you. You can walk to the local shops and restaurants nearby.
The resort truly made the holiday great for us. Definitely not cheap but I did my comparison to similar priced resorts and we preferred this one to all the others for all the above reasons.
