We were looking for a self catering villa, away from it all in a tropical environment for a whole month of relaxation. Waterfall Villa in Laem Set (approx. 20 minutes drive from Lamai), Koh Samui, did fit the bill perfectly for us. We had a wonderful holiday; the villa is such a nice place that we (seasoned travellers) did almost not leave the house, for Samui has not many interesting attractions. We were perfectly happy "at home".
The villa lies up against a hill, in a safe guarded compound with 16 residences, full privacy, in the middle of nature and with a spectacular view over the sea, facing West with beautiful, daily varying sunsets.
Positives: Unusual architecture, shaped around the rock, large living area (around 10 x 15 metres), with a fantastic terrace of 15 x 3 metres; sun from around 1:00 pm till sunset and a part with perpetual shade as well. Fully equipped kitchen, unusual waterfall feature, beautiful garden around the house. One separate bedroom with ensuite bathroom at the lower level. The other "bedroom" is an open annex 5 steps down from the living room and serves as TV area as well, but has its own bathroom (shower/WC/vanity unit with hand-wash basin). The owner, Marc, is very attentive and helpful where needed. The house comes with a local mobile phone which makes it easy to contact either the agent or the owner. The service is almost like a hotel: Cleaning every day, change of bedlinen and towels whenever needed, toiletries available, breakfast prepared (with your own ingredients or bought by the staff for you)... Nice clean swimming pool at approx. 150 metres walk from the house.
Points of attention: To reach the house from the road, one has to go down a flight of 85 steps, winding between the rocks, not dangerous, but not suited for people with a hip or knee problem, or a heart condition; to reach the bedroom, there are another 25 steps down. A 4x4 car is required to climb the steep hilly road. One needs to protect oneself against the many mosquitoes (everywhere on Samui); mosquito-nets are provided on the beds, spray and creams were available in the house. The house can not be locked, although the place seems safe and guarded; nothing "unpleasant" has ever happened according to the owner (who lives himself in the upper house, 60 steps higher up) and the agent. The agency we were dealing with has a slight tendency to "over-sell" the property: e.g. the "electronic control" of the waterfall turns out to be an off-on switch, a giant screen with projector is a nice widescreen TV. We did discuss these points and the agent promised to update the info on the website. Best is to check out with the owner what the status is regarding the info on the website, especially if you need more than one bedroom. His name is Marc, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org and a trustworthy person, as far as we can judge.
Again: We had a wonderful holiday, no doubt, thanks to the Villa's features and location!
