“Hotel great - surroundings not so much”
Reviewed 2 October 2013

Me, my boyfriend and another couple have just got back from a week at the Eden Roc Resort hotel in Kalithea, Rhodes.
The hotel itself was lovely. The pool area was good, food was good considering it was all inclusive and I am very fussy - did get boring by the end of the week though. The a'la carte beach restaurant is quite nice but be warned the hotel do not inform you that you can have lunch in there if you pre book and your entitled to one dinner if you pre book.
The rooms were nicer than expected, cleaned every day and we have perfect views of the sea - the front of the hotel had rubbish view from what I could tell.
The staff at this hotel are really lovely and hard working. Although they rarely seem to have a day off.
Entertainment was good some nights and pretty lame on others.
Unfortunately I would not return to this hotel because of the location. We were lead to believe there was some sort of night life in the area - there isn't. There is only hotels. No pubs/bars or restaurants. Luckily its only 10 mins in a taxi to falaraki and to Rhodes town/old town BUT at 10 - 13 euros each way it would soon start adding up.
Don't book a taxi from the hotel reception - you cant haggle the price after they have already turnt up. Walk up to the bus stops at the main road - you can haggle it and get a few euros cheaper.

Room Tip: ask for a higher floor with a sea view.

As we had never stayed in the island of Rhodes before, we chose this hotel from the internet based on its location by the beach. We spent 6 days there in the beginning of September and we have to say we were NOT disappointed! The hotel has it's own beach, with lots of sun beds which tended to fill up pretty quickly, but we used the sun beds in the pool area, so it was not a problem, as when we wanted to swim in the sea, all we had to do was go down three steps and we were in the water! The sea was absolutely beautiful, clear and refreshing and very calm all the time, because it's location is in a cove, so it is not affected much by the weather, which, by the way, was absolutely perfect the whole time we stayed there. We had booked a double room for our stay, but on arrival they switched us to a suite, and it was just perfect! Large living room, a beautiful modern bedroom, bathroom with double sinks and separate tub and shower, a completely separate dressing room with lots of shelves and room to hang your clothes and a large balcony with great view of the pool area, the sea and the lights of Rhodes in the distance. There was even a fruit basket with a note from the management welcoming us to the hotel! Every staff member we dealt with were extremely polite and helpful, from Rena and the rest of the reception staff to Maritsa and Sergio in the restaurant and beach taverna to Elina who's expertise in preparing Greek coffee in the morning surpassed this of the Greek people! And the manager Kostas was always there, supervising every area and very open to comments and suggestions. The breakfast was included in our package, it was very good overall with sufficient variety to please all tastes. The only drawback was the location as far as mobility is concerned, because the hotel is a bit far from town, and in order to go anywhere you have to have a car or use taxis, but we had a car, so we did not have a problem moving around. Also, it was pretty full, thankfully not as full as it would have been in July and August, and we found the guests to be quite demanding and rude, which put a lot of stress on the staff! Overall, it has been a great experience, and we would definitely stay there again the next time we visit Rhodes!

Room Tip: Suites are just great!

Having experienced "all inclusive" holidays several times before, I decided on this hotel for a special holiday. We chose to ignore the previous reviews as these were very mixed, having now experienced the establishment for myself I am sorry that we did not change our hotel!!

Lets start on the positives, main areas cleaned daily a few of the staff were friendly, no problem getting a sun bed at any of the locations, pools clean, didn't need to pay for a sun bed at the beach, beach towels could be changed daily.

We went on the Lantern Tour which was value for money a great walk round the medieval part of Rhodes Old Town which was very informative, 3 course lunch was very good which highlighted how poor the food at the hotel was. It was finished with a mini cruise round the harbour in the evening.

The negatives: maid service each day but the only thing they did was make the bed, had to ask for clean towels. Like other people we also felt that in the restaurant it was a free for all, there were 4 of us and on our first night when we couldn't find a table for 4 we sat at a table set for 6 to be told by a waiter that these were only for a minimum of 5 persons but for this time only we could sit there!! Out of our 7 day stay we had to find our own table and at times own cutlery etc ourselves although it is fair to say we were shown to a table twice but that didn't include a waiter serving us with drinks as we had to get our own. Suffice to say for the majority of the waiting staff clearly were not happy in their job as they just looked miserable which is a great shame because there was one woman who was very attentive but the grade was marked poor because of everyone else. Food was edible but basic, feel they tried too hard to cover all cultures and failed. There really didn't seem a lot of difference in the flavours although the ice cream was lovely. The plates were cold which didn't help retain the heat for the food so quite often by the time you got back to your seat your food was tepid.

We went with Jet 2, although the flights were on time the rep does not come to the hotel, you are directed to the welcome book where you get the information on excursions and contact nos.

During our stay we never had to pay for water and we did meet some nice people despite it being a bit of tongue and cheek about being at a boot camp and being encouraged to go to your bed after the bar was closed we made the best of it.

We like others read the reviews before our trip. We considered changing hotels because the reviews were a real concern. We chose to stay and spent two excellent weeks in this hotel. Staff were helpful and provided overall good service . Read recent review and noted paying for water. I stayed for two weeks never spent a penny on water. Never saw a snail stew but as part of one evenings themed menu snails were available.
Rhodes like many other Greek islands is no longer an English only location. This hotel is truly international with over ten nationalities at one point during our stay.
Anyone attending this hotel should remember you are going abroad and the menu was well thought out with all nations considered and with the themed evenings alternatives available. I am not a fish eater and was concerned about that themed night only to go in and find a full roast available, beef, pork and chicken,
Overall views, rooms great if you can afford it go for an Eden double room, standard rooms a bit smaller without a safe. Double rooms for a couple perfect.
Hotel always clean the staff are there all day well into the night.
The hotel has a significant amount of short stay guests we stayed for two weeks and staff soon realised this and we got what we expected from the staff, recognition, bar staff new what drink I wanted without asking after three days, restaurant staff were friendly and helpful even if they were overworked and treated very unfairly by some guests. We were embarrassed to be british at times but other nationatalies were also demanding and plain rude to staff.
Read the small print before you winge about times and available food and drink as part of an all inclusive deal. We received what was advertised no point in expecting more when your not paying for it.
Pools great, never had a problem with a sun bed by pool or in gardens. Beach gets full very early, get some suitable footwear for beach stones and pebbles but when your in sea clear and warm, watch the kids, beach shelves down very quickly not a paddling beach for young ones without arm bands on.
Taverna a bit disappointing compared to other places we have stayed but you could still eat their with a fixed menu for all inclusive guests at lunchtime.
Staffing levels were being reduced in our two weeks but so were the amount of guests. In a country facing financial problems it makes business sense to do so only difference we noted was some days at breakfast it was difficult to get a table.
We met a great couple there and had a good time being the last in the bar at 2.00am and enjoyed a laugh with staff at bar.
Some characters stayed at same time as us and I have to say they were a bit more entertaining than the animation team at times but the animation team were doing a great job providing something for everyone. Greek night was good and kids looked after.
Tips,
Do a day out or a night out in Rhodes old town,
Cabs from hotel into town 13 euros coming back 9 euros well worth it for shopping, drinking and eating out and if your into history it's all there. Ask taxi to drop you at Marina entrance great place to start.
We will go back to this hotel but with the knowledge that we will be staying at an international hotel and somewhere which caters for multi national guests.
We travelled with First Choice/Thomsons. They are a big let down, don't expect any reps and the call centre was useless. We booked return taxi and could not get any info to confirm times for return pick up so we had to get a cab ourselves.
No information on site or assistance which we have never experienced with First Choice before.
This hotel has plans to expand if they expand their staff and facilities it will be a great resort but check next year before you book about building work as there is a lot planned and may be an issue at start of next season.
Finally, if you have travelled to greek islands and stayed at a hotel which caters for british guests and that is what you want, this hotel is not for you.
If however you want to experience the great weather, Greek and an international atmosphere good location good food and service then Eden Roc is for you.

Room Tip: Eden Roc Double room with sea view 1st floor or higher no need to pay any more, Bungalows quite a wa...

I visited this hotel in July and our first impression was not good as our hotel room had not been cleaned and there was a double bed and we requested a twin, the hotel was fully booked so they couldn't move us so cleaned the room promptly and I had to sleep on a put me up on the first night, the following day at about 1pm we were shown a couple of rooms and managed to move to a twin room on a higher floor that got the evening sun.....they did apologise and sent a bottle of wine & fruit basket to our room to say sorry.

The location is nice, the beach & pool areas are good and we could always get a sun bed.

The carnage came at meal times as it was a free for all, you are not shown to your table you have to find an empty table, secure it and then have to wait for someone to clean the dirty plates and change everything. It's very much like a school canteen feel, food was ok but very repetitive and staff all looked miserable, it was not a relaxing experience at all and for me having nice meals and a bit of atmosphere is a big part of the holiday. Our best meals were when we ate out in old rhodes town, as we were all inclusive this wasn't ideal. I would recommend that first choice remove this hotel from there books as it isn't up to the standard that I would expect for a 4 star all inclusive hotel. (First choice rate the hotel as 3 star plus).

Overall I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a nice, relaxing all inclusive hotel in Rhodes, there must be better hotels for the price we paid.

Paying for water more than 3 euro in an all inclusive is my biggest gripe. Didn't mind paying a euro for the lovely whippy ice cream! This place is quite big with not enough staff, so very much a free for all. 2nd biggest gripe was the dinning room with silly short hours of opening. Having to walk around for quite some time at meal times trying to find somewhere to sit. Not shown to tables. Find your own table and the crockery to put on it. Don't expect to find a cereal bowl or a bottle of wine let alone any member of staff to fetch them for you. Food plenty of choice but not hot. Drinks at the bar - well, cheap rubbish. Take a tip - get 2 drinks and return for 2 drinks neat to top them up!!

Shame really because rooms were fine, pools very clean and the views wonderful. Lots of steps around with no hand rails. Restaurant below ground level - more steep steps! Lift to restaurant often broken. Reception staff very good. Animation team very good. At least there was some entertainment.
Pleased we only stayed a week. Met some great people Jane & Gordon who gave us many laughs! Not many Brits in this hotel for some reason.

Room Tip: Don't waste money on a sea view. We had sea view as we like the morning sun on balcony. Too ho...

The Hotel has a lot going for it except it is understaffedis managed poorly and has too many stupid little rules, As we found out to our astonishment bottles of water are not part of the all inclusive we were told by the rep to buy a bottle and then keep filling it up at one of the 2 water fountains, as soon as we did this a notice went up saying it was not allowed. It says in First choice brochure that ice cream was part of the all inclusive we were told that you had to pay one euro. The drinks were of poor quality unless you had ouzo,We are not fussy about food but we do like it to be hot, ended up going to local restaurants half way through the holiday. The waiter service and tables never laid out properly was none existant and the entertainment very poor. However we did meet some very nice people Steve & Yvonne and Anka and Adrian. They were also dissapointed in this hotel

Room Tip: take the beach path past the tavern bar and turn right walk up the road to the main road and turn ri...
