“Great skiing for beginners and families - very friendly staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 April 2014

We were at Gautefall for a week close to the end of the season (March), and stayed in the Gautefall-Hayttene lodges about a 5 minute drive from the resort, but there is a hotel on the site I believe. When we got there on the Monday there was only a few other skiiers there - we pretty much had the slopes to ourselves until the weekend when more people arrived (mainly local teenagers and families). This was ideal as it allowed us to learn how to ski/snowboard without the distractions of other users. The staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming and - which is usual for Norway - spoke perfect English. Despite the resort being quiet during the week, there were still plenty of staff on hand to assist with the chair lift and button lifts, who would also give us newbies tips as they saw us coming down the slopes. There was a good selection of slopes of varying difficulty, most of which converge back at the centre. There are two green slopes that go from the top of the mountain which are really good fun to ski and relatively easy, plus you get the spectacular views from miles around. There are 3 black runs and plenty of space for off-piste and cross-country, so it still caters for the more advanced skiier. Some of the runs include jumps which look terrifying, but are easily avoidable! The ski centre is well equipped with a cafe that serves hot and cold food and drinks, a clothing store, and plenty of lego to keep the 3 year-old (and some of the adults) entertained. There are tables and benches inside and outside to have your lunch/cup of tea. We had ideal skiing weather most of the time, with a couple of days of fresh snowfall, although they do have snow machines in case of no snowfall.
All in all it was a fantastic trip, and ideal for a family with varying levels of experience and ages (we had 2 adults who had skiied before, 3 who hadn't, 1 snowboarder, 2 8-10 year olds who had some lessons, and a 2 year old who did some skiing on the nursery slope with a reigns!) Some more experienced skiiers would have been bored after a week, but I understand that they are installing a new 6-seater fast chair lift and doubling the number of runs that they have for next season so there should be plenty to do.
