“Superb Fjord Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2012

Hotel Ullensvang is simply amazing! Not much to look at from the street, but don't let that put you off because the minute you enter the lobby the view toward the fjord will change you forever. We were met at checkin by the 4th generation owner who welcomed us and treated us like we were old friends. The owner and his adult children are always around and available to make sure you're enjoying your stay. We were in a Junior Suite with a connecting room for our children - both with beautiful fjord views. Just can't say enough great things about this property.

There are a lot of tour groups who come in for one day and leave the next day or 2 days later, but the hotel really does try to keep the individual travelers separate from the groups and they do a good job of it. For instance our table for breakfast and dinner was in a slightly raised area very close to the windows overlooking the fjord, while the tour groups were in a separate section further from the windows. We figured that in order to stay open the hotel needs the revenue from the groups and that putting up with the groups was a small price to pay for such a fantastic property.

The breakfast and dinner buffets are both huge and very, very good food.

The activities are very nice, but the only negative thing that I have to say about the hotel is that they charge for each and every activity - the gym, the tennis courts, the paddle boats, etc...and I'm not really certain why they do this. I surmised that it is because they need to discount their room rates for the tour groups so much that in order to remain profitable they need to charge for each activity. As an individual traveler my rate wasn't discounted though. My suggestion would be to have activities included in the individual room rates but charge for tour groups.

Okay - one other complaint - there are no laundry services of any kind. We were on a 2 1/2 week trip and needed to do laundry when we were there, but there is none available at all. They did their best to try to help by finding an employee who had a washer and dryer in his home who would do our laundry, but that made us a little uncomfortable. Eventually we learned that there is a washer and dryer in the tourist office roughly 150 feet from the hotel and we were able to use those. Suggestion to the hotel - put in a washer and dryer in some out of the way spot that is for guest self service. Really minor complaint in an otherwise superb hotel.

They are building a new pool area that will be really amazing when it's finished.

My family and I have already decided that this is one of our favorite places in the world and we can't wait to come back! Loved it!

Room Tip: Definitely get a fjord view - really stupendous views on that side of the hotel.

Dear family from San Diego!
Thank you once more for staying with us this summer and thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts on TA. Nothing makes us happier than hearing that you would like to come back - we certainly look forward to welcoming you back!
Just a little comment on the activities: that we charge a fee for some of those (about half of all activities are free of charge) has nothing to do with group rates, I can assure you that they are not too much discounted. But: Our system doesn't allow to include all activities for some guests only. Also, many guests don't want to use any of them and react if everything is included in the room rate. So we're trying to compromise.
Thank you once more and warmest, best wishes to all of you from the whole Utne family (4th and 5th generation!)

I'm a big fan of Norway, and this hotel is one of the best in the country! Superb view at the Fjords, rooms that are very spacious, the buffet is just magnificent. Can't say anything bad of this hotel. You can use the rowboats for free, for the pedalo's you have to pay. This is recommended. Sitting in the middle of the Fjord in your rowboat at 11PM, fantastic!
They have very cosy rooms and places everywhere in the hotel where you can sit and drink something and enjoy the views. There is an indoor tennisfield, squash fields, indoor swimming pool...And they are constructing some sort of outdoor pool. I was there 2 weeks ago, work related. This is a hotel I really want to visit again, that I can enjoy every single minute of it! :)

This is a very nice hotel - a kind of destination in itself. High standard very clean - well kept. Ask for a room with sea view - it is really worth it. When leaving the hotel - one regret that one did not test out more of the facilities - and used the time more efficiently. This is one of the best hotels in Norway - and if have a chance - one should stop and stay there.
They still lack the coffee and tea making possibility many hotels now have in each room - but this will come - sooner or later - probably later.......

Room Tip: Ask for sea view room - sometimes one have to pay extra - sometimes not. It makes the stay more enj...

Having just left Ullensvang Hotel today, and now writing from Bergen, I must comment on our all too short stay here at this fantastic location. Being a long way from home in a country with such spectacular scenery so foreign to ours, what better place to soak up the atmosphere! It would have to be unique amongst hotels anywhere in the world for it's ornate decor, many many choices of guest sitting rooms, extremely welcoming staff who even met us at the private ferry stop beside the hotel[making us feel almost royal],having so many leisure options on site making us feel one night was definitely too short a time there, and to cap it off being farewelled by a very friendly man who stated he was the present generation owner of the family operated establishment,, who offered to assist with our luggage back to the ferry, chatted happily about our visit, and even waved to me as we sped off in the ferry despite being in what appeared to be an onsite meeting with others in the grounds of the hotel! Sure, the food and drink prices were horrendous by Australian standards but what part of Norway isn't? We would recommend staying at this hotel if you really want a magical, unforgettable experience, and remember to go hungry to the nightly buffet meal in the dining room which was superb in variety and taste. WENDY ABBOTT
PS Check out all the historical photos, paintings, artifacts, and precious memorabilia around the walls in just about every corridor and public space in the vast building. It would have been nice to have a few written explanations in English to be able to enjoy them more. Who was the rock star that was in the photo with a very young Henry Kissinger taken when he must have stayed at the hotel?

Dear Family Abbott!
Thank you for your recent visit and thank you for your lovely comments on TA whilst you still are in the country! We wish having been able to accommodate you two nights as you requested for so that you had more time to explore everything, but we unfortuntately didn't get any rooms available. Still, we are thrilled that you enjoyed your one night stay with us and thank you for you input in the end - in fact we have planned something just like that and hope you will be back one day! Have a safe journey back home and kind regards, Hans Edmund & Barbara Z. Utne
PS: the "rock star" was Nancy Kissinger!

The setting is spectacular for this tour group heavy facility. Staff is very nice. Rooms are ok but there is only heating no cooling. Buffet quite good. The Internet service is unreliable. As choices few in the area this is as good as it gets. Spring for a fjord view room, the pArking lot doesn't do it.

Dear sir
Thank you for your post on TA. The US market is used to air conditoning - in Norway, the temperatures are in average too low in order to justify an investment like that. Furthermore, we are committed to working as environmental friendly as only possible. In summer, we take the cold water from the bottom of the fjord pressing it through fun coilers that are placed in each guest room that disposes its own control panel. In winter time it works the other way round.
We are once again sorry to hear that only your Ipad couldn't connect to internet, whilst the rest of your group managed to do so.
And for sure, we couldn't agree more, it's worth wile paying the supplement for the fjord view rooms, compared to the mountain view rooms.
Kind regards, Barbara Zanoni Utne

I stayed in this hotel for a day as part of a sponsored training... The pictures of the hotel and the surrounding areas on their website were beautiful, but to see them in the flesh was stuinning... The buffet was good, the choices were varied... While some parts of the hotel would seem old, it was quite romantic given the majestic view of the fjords and the untouched surroundings.

We had beer at the bar downstairs, played pool and table tennis. We sat in the lounges talking until late hours and it was truly relaxing... I enjoyed my bubble bath in the rustic tub with rose petals and a glass of merlot...

We stayed in late Autumn where there it wasnt very cold... I think its the perfect time to enjoy this hotel... I will always hold this very special place in a quiet, hidden corner of my soul.

Dear DadaC
Thank you very much for your kind message on TA. We are very pleased that you still treasure your stay with us even though it has been a while ago. Fall is certainly a lovely time to visit us, just like spring - the blossoming period is just around the corner now and given the fact that we have halv a million of fruit trees around us, you can imagine the scenery which we are happy to witness each year. Welcome back and kind regards, Barbara Z. Utne

This is a very nice family-run hotel in a wonderful location. The rooms are comfortable and the service in the hotel is very good. Possibly the nicest and most unique feature of the hotel is the number of sitting rooms all very tastefully decorated and with elegant furniture. Of course the views of the fjord are stunning and there is an extensive sitting area at the fjord side with boats available for the use of the guests. We enjoyed a very nice buffet in the restaurant with a real feast of local delicacies on offer. We would certainly stay here again.
