After a long way in scenic roads, we got to Ullensvang. A very pleasant hotel in every corner, every detail, in each of the numerous living rooms. The hotel was founded more than a century ago by the same family that runs it now and is very comfortable. The view to the fjord is just awesome. The dinner was also great: they have one of the best buffets we had in Scandinavia, with all kinds of meats, salads, desserts, etc. It was also great to have lots of pics in the margins of the fjord. You can miss the spa.

Room Tip: Prefer rooms facing the fjord in the higher floors

The setting is perfect, on the south fork of the Hardangerfjord. There is excellent walking straight out of the hotel, varying from easy strolls to tough uphill hikes at one's choice. The hotel itself has excellent facilities. The buffets, for breakfast and, when offered, lunch and dinner are also excellent (although pescatarians/vegetarians have a much narrower choice of hot main courses than carnivores). Service is impeccable (but getting a drink on the expansive terraces at busy times can take a little time). We bought a picnic for a walk, which was OK but this Norway so it was expensive. There was not always an a la carte choice for meals although, as noted, the buffet was extensive.

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for a fjord view. There is a small suprmarket and a fast food outlet very close...

Dear twovass

Thank you for choosing Hotel Ullensvang and for sharing your positive comments about your stay on tripadvisor.

We are delighted to learn that you had a good stay with us and in particular appreciated our facilities, the food and the service provided by our staff. The price level in Norway is not something we can do anything about, but we certainly noted your input with regard to the offer of vegetarian dishes and the picnic.

It would be a great pleasure to welcome you back.

Yours sincerely

Strategically located with a stunning fjord view, this hotel was one of the highlights of our recent trip. Definitely get a fjord view and upgrade to a suite if you can. The restaurant is good, the breakfasts great and the spa is the most glamorous I have ever seen. The sauna has a large glass wall so you can view the fjord while you're steaming, two different pools including an "infinity" pool that is slightly warmed and allows you to swim outside while basking in the amazing view. The owner, Hans Utne was quite attentive and often in the lobby looking over things. When he learned my mother's maiden name was Lofthus (also the name of the town the hotel is in) he offered to personally drive me to the Lofthus farm to meet the apple farmers who are probably my distant relatives. You just don't get personal attention like that very often these days. Highly recommended.

I visited this hotel with my family for my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary. We had a room overlooking the fjord, and the scenery is outstanding! Like Frenchguy48 we also had problems with our shower, but just the first time we used it. We couldn´t turn it off for awhile, and when we had managed to get control of the shower, we couldn´t get any properly hot water. This though, wasn´t a problem the other times we used it.

The pool was great for us, and the outdoor swimming canal was great. There is an adults only part, with a pool and a sauna, but when we were there there was a group of families that didn´t respect that and let their children use this part. Since we traveled with children as well we didn´t really mind, but if I was on a couples retreat I would se this as a major problem. The hotel staff should make sure that children under 18 years don´t use the adults only part. And it´s probably just to let them know about the problem (There isn´t any staff at the pool area).

I did NOT like that you had to pay for using the tennis court (200 NOK an hour) I think this should be complimentary, like the pool area and the ping pong tables. And the price for bowling was to high (40NOK a person). If the hotel was in a bigger place where there were other options, this wouldn´t be a problem. For people staying at this (quite expensive) hotel, this should be free, or cheaper. Of course, you can choose not to use these, but when you travel with children, it´s hard to say no.

The room was a bit 1980´s but well maintained.
Good food, but a bit of a queue at dinner...

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room, they have a softer color palette

Dear karitha

Thank you for your stay and thank you for sharing your Ullensvang experience on tripadvisor.

We are lucky to have many family gatherings at the hotel and working very hard to make all three generations happy at the same time. Due to our many facilities, we are lucky to succeed with just that!

It pleases us that you liked our wellness area a lot and we agree with you, it's sad when families don't respect our adult zone. We made this zone in order for our adult guests to relax and not hear children noise. We control the area every once in a while since we are aware of the problem, but surely can do controls even more often.

Most of the facilities are included in our rates and hence free of charge, eg. the wellness area, parking, fitness, live music etc - only very few cost a supplement.

We look forward to welcoming you back!

Best regards

In glorious weather late in the season, with the apple orchards heavy with fruit and the coach tours thin on the ground, I really enjoyed this hotel. It's NOT a small place - but the staff were extremely friendly (senior directors included), the views are stunning, the swimming facilities amazing.

The slightly Hardanger theme park circa 1987 style of the decor takes a bit of getting used to - but look at some of the individual pieces of local craft and individual paintings and you will see that they are stunning. It's not cheap, but then where is in Norway?

If you're feeling fit enough and the weather is good, do consider the hike up the Monk's steps to the Nosi. The views are spectacular - but it's steep in both directions!

We stayed here while on a tour. The location is strategically great for exploring the fjord the hotel sits near. Better yet, the rooms are quite nice with a closet, modern and spacious bathroom and comfortable beds. There is free wifi and it works great. A small desk with lamp, small patio with chairs and a 2 person love seat, round out the little extras. Breakfast spread is huge and varied. There is a pool, hot tub and sauna. I have just a couple pet peeves that prevent a 5 star rating.
The water in the bathroom sink is in a fine spray format, great for washing fruits and veggies but not so much for hands etc. and then there's the shower. My wife managed to turn the thing on but then shouted to me she could not turn it off. So I decided to take my shower and then turn it off for my sometimes mechanically challenged spouse. Short story: it took me 5 minutes of tinkering and adjusting 3 different unlabeled knobs before the water magically turned off. I have no idea how it happened and thanked God we did not have to use the thing again. Seriously, folks, if you have a shower that requires an advanced degree in engineering to operate, you ought to post a set of instructions in the bath. Perhaps Scandinavian clients intuit the operation but we have been all over Europe and never encountered a shower like this one. PS the shower water pressure was fine and there was plenty of hot water. We just couldn't shut it off. Think about the wasted water.
Bottom line this is a great place to stay and we would return. Only thing is we would ask for a copy of the shower instruction manual upon check in. Hotel tip. It appears that the even numbered rooms face the parking lot and the odd numbers have the view. Since this was a tour of course we overlooked the parking lot. If you book on your own ask about the view because the water side of the hotel has fabulous scenery but I'm sure commands a premium rate.

Dear Frenchguy48

Thank you for sharing your positive comments about your stay on tripadvisor.

We are delighted to learn that you had an overall positive stay. We thank you for the detailed shower description - there is very few rooms equiped with the newest high-tec showers and we clearly see the need for an instruction!

With regards to the view, we guarantee fjord view which in return costs a supplement. Your tour organiser chose to go for mountain view rooms.

It would be a great pleasure to welcome you back very soon.

We were blessed to stay here with our SmarTours travel group. What beautiful views of the fjord and mountains, wonderful 10 course buffet, the most beautiful of swimming pools and heated spas. The rooms were very nice and all seem to have a nice view of something pleasant if not the fjord and mountains, perhaps a beautiful apple orchard like the one on the hill outside our room.. Charming young people wait on the tables and clean your rooms. If you are in Norway be sure and look for this hotel ...just amazing!

Room Tip: All roms are nice but if you can get one facing the fjords you will get a breathtaking view!
