We have just had two nights at this hotel, which was the last in our travels around Norway.
Our room was clean and comfortable, if a little soulless. We had a balcony (I think every room does) but because it was on the road side ("mountain view") it was not somewhere to linger.
The dinner buffet had plenty of choice, both hot and cold. The food was of usual the standard in Norwegian hotels. There was an especially good selection of puddings. Breakfast was also the usual hotel buffet, and again had a good selection of good dishes.
The outside area is very large, with lots of places to sit and good pools, including two for over 18s only. However, the number of guests and the exceptionally warm weather did mean that there was a lot of competition for the comfortable chairs. At times the pool area did feel quite crowded.
There is also a beach from which you can enjoy (?) a swim in the fjord. The water is really cold but I think a proper dip is something you have to try, even if only fro a couple of minutes before dashing into the pool which is nice and warm.
The view of the fjord is absolutely stunning, with snow/glacier capped mountains looming over the dark waters. Unlike some other fjord-side hotels, this one does not suffer from the daily arrival of cruise liners.
It was a little disappointing to be charged extra for dressing gowns and slippers for the pool, having paid quite a hefty price for the room (you don't have to have them but other hotels with spas seem to provide them free of charge with the room).
The staff are friendly and efficient.
Loftus itself is charming, quiet little village. It's worth strolling south towards the church and then up the hill a little. There are also some good hiking trails, of varying levels of difficulty.

Room Tip: Rooms with odd numbers are on the fjord side and probably worth the extra Kr40. These get the eveni...

Dear Nick P
We really appreciate that you took the time to record your experience in such a detailed way and are delighted to hear that we were able to fulfil so many aspects of your expectations. We are happy that you in particular enjoyed our food, the staff, the outside areas and the quietness of the place.
Almost all of our rooms have a balcony, and yes, it's definitely worth to upgrade to a fjordview room. However, as you wrote, it has been exeptionally warm and perhaps you therefore were lucky to have a slightly cooler room by facing the mountains this time...!
For your kind information, all our upgraded room categories offer bathrobes/ slippers included in the rate.
We hope to be able to welcome you back in the near future!
Best regards

The hotel is a "grand dame" and wonderful experience. Great place to stay on your exploration of the fjords. Arrive early afternoon so you can enjoy the property and a walk through the village. Don't miss the beautiful antiques throughout the common areas. The dinner buffet was excellent with a wide selection of food, but was the same the two nights we stayed there.

Dear fdhappy
Thank you for staying with us! We appreciate that you took the time to record your Ullensvang experience and are delighted to hear that we were able to fulfil your expectations. The Ullensvang Dinner Buffet has become our signature. As you write, we offer a wide selection of different food, hence making it basically impossible to try everything on one evening. Therefore it should absolutely be possible to stay more than one night and still enjoy various food.
We hope to be able to welcome you back to Hotel Ullensvang!
Best regards

I visited Hotel Ullensvang in July 2014 with some friends. The plan was to relax by the pool and have a nice meal. However, we were greeted by a very rude gentleman (from the family who runs the hotel) who treated us as criminals from the moment we stepped inside. After paying in excess of 200 NOK per person to use the pool area, we learned that this by no means included the use of the tanning beds (!). The grumpy fellow even approached us later to check if we really had payed.

The location of this hotel is phenomenal, but I won't come back again when the owners obviously don't want any guests there.

PS: we skipped lunch and left after one hour

Dear Andreas H
Thank you for your comments on TA. I can assure you that Hotel Ullensvang is incredibly glad in guests, that is the reason why we are here for.
During busy summer months, our pools and the garden are highly popular. Guests who have already checked out still enjoy the swimming facilities and the sun chairs. Arriving guests check in early to do the very same thing.
Guests like yourself, who do not stay at the hotel, are welcome to use the facilities by paying en entrance fee on days when we have capacity to do so. On the entrance ticket it states also that the sunchairs are only for hotel guests (due to above mentioned reasons) - I hope you understand that hotel guests must have priority.
It is regrettable that you didn't feel welcome, however, if we want to or not, we need to make controls in order to avoid having "guests" in the garden who enjoy the facilities without paying for themselves.
Best regards

I stayed at Hotel Ullensvang a few years ago in 2010 with my family but feel compelled to write a review as it was a most wonderful experience. While the price is on the high side, it is well worth it to be surrounded by some of the most magnificent views of fjordland and it really does feel a bit out of this Earth. The rooms are good and staff are professional and helpful. There is also a lot of history in the hotel and walking around the grounds it is fun to explore for the family as well as enjoying the views. The food is simply delicious and we just loved the wide selection. Would definitely recommend friends spend some time here and enjoy the experience.

This hotel is basically very good, but price level is also very high (NOK 2 350,- pr night in double room with sea view). Rooms are OK, but not special in any way! Big plus is that the rooms has a terrace with sea view and evening sun, but remember to specify room on the sea side of the hotel! The hotel has a lot of facilities, great indoor/ outdoor pool and an indoor tennis court! The exterior of the hotel is beautiful with a seaside park/ promenade! To justify the price fully, two corrective actions needs to be taken; the free wifi is too slow and unstable (max. 1.0 Mb/s down) measured in the 4th floor. Further, at arrival pretty late in the afternoon we were told that there were only two dinner options; either a buffet or an a la carte restaurant both places prices starts at NOK 500 per person exclusive drinks! Such an hotel should have a cheaper alternative with som lighter dinner alternatives! In particular beacuse no other restaurants can be found in the neighbourhood (except for a MIX kiosk with some cheap food available).

The breakfast buffet is excellent, and the personnel we met were all very friendly and service minded.

Room Tip: Specify sea view

Dear Rannugode
We appreciate that you took the time to write a review on TA and that you were overall happy with your stay. Thank you also for your specific inputs. On days where we have almost full occupancy and where everybody is online pretty much at the same time, our free WIFI can reach a certain limit. This makes it unfortunately slower and more unstable for our guests. An upgrade is a major investment for us, but it's surely on our wish -/ to do list! With regards to dinner, we offer light snacks in our coffee shop. Hence a cheaper alternative which can be enjoyed in our lobby area until 10 pm. We hope to welcome you back and wish you a nice summer! Best regards, Barbara Zanoni Utne

This resort represents a history of five generations of hotel excellence, fully catering to the comfort and pleasure of their guests. This location could accommodate everything from a cozy, relaxing weekend to a large formal occasion. Our room overlooked the apple orchard, not the fjord, but we had a lovely patio. The food buffet was varied and wonderful. Located on the edge of a beautiful fjord, you can't help but relax.

It started in 1846 with one room and a Kjenga, an ale bowl which became their symbol. ( you will understand when you are there!) .Many generations of the Utna family have brought it to a first class historical 168 rooms hotel. Even if it is big they are able to make the guest feels cosy and treated personally. Wonderfully situated in front of a fjord, with a lovely park, an iside and ourside swimming pool (29degrees) with hydro massages, sauna, fitness, boats for guests, library and more. As a guest you cannot feel otherwise but happy here. The athmosphere is great and the personnel is very present and very kind and friendly. The rooms are funrished in norvegian style just as the rest of the hotel. The dinner in the Zanoni Restaurant is excellent. The chef, Chris, has a great international experience which you will enjoy in your dish served in a very professinal manner. For the breakfast, a norvegian and international buffet, we were accompanied by life harp music! The nature of the surroundings is wonderful. What do you want more?
