“Wish there were alternatives”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2012

I work at Sunndalsøra frequently. There are no alternatives in Winter so I am forced to stay at this hotel. The hotel is old, and worn. Even on business, this is poor value for money.

Just stayed one night in a single room. The room was a single room, quite small, but large enough for a one night stay. The hotel did not seem to have been refurbished for some years, but the standard was OK. Clean and tidy room and bathroom.

Unfortunately I have nothing positive to say about this hotel. It isnt absolutely terrible but the keys points I would make are:

1) The outside of the building is grey concrete so gives an unappealing start
2) You walk in and it feels very dark and dingy in the entrance lobby - kind of how I imagine the average British hotel was during the 70's
3) The staff whilst not being rude dont exactly seem the most helpful and dont make you walk away with a smile on your face
4) The rooms are OK but again the bathrooms feel old and tired and the rooms feel very similar. It is the sort of thing I would expect from a tired run down road side motel rather than a branded hotel
5) Breakfast isnt great, with lots of dirty plates/bowls on the tables because no-one seems to come and clear them up very often. This lack of staff also mean things run out and dont get replenished - hardly what you want from a hotel. I can even remember there being an old domestic looking toaster there for the clients to use!!
6) There is no view of anything nice as you look out on the town/village which isnt very picturesque. In fact it seems to be there only because there is a big aluminium factory just down the road. And this is right next to the fjord, presumably for ease of transportation, but this means it doesnt even have a nice fjordside area.

Basically the hotel has nothing to commend about it but the area around the hotel are lovely. Innerdal absolutely lives up to write ups about being the most beautiful valley in Norway, which says something in itself.
I have done quite a bit of mountain walking and the days walk from the car park near Innerdal along the valley and then up Innerdalstarnet is the best days walk for the variety of terrain, beauty of the surroundings and the unspoilt nature of the place - plus if you go all the way to the top, the challenge of doing it. It is about as tough a scramble as I would want and I feel pretty confident on these things.

If you are coming to this area I would recommend you stay in a hut in one of the valleys, they have a much better outlook and anything you make yourself for breakfast will be better than what you get here.

I should say the one decent thing the hotel did was move us to the back after the first two nights were disturbed by a Norwegian Mid Summer concert season which runs for weeks it seems, and go on til about 2 in the morning! We were at the front and it was so loud it was impossible to sleep. At the back whilst there was a bit of noise at least you could get some sleep. If they hadnt move me it would have been a 1 star place!!
By far the worst hotel I have stayed in.

Room Tip: Get a room at the back in case the music party is going on
