“Caracal River Cottage”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

We spent a wonderful weekend at Porcupine Hills. So quiet, the room was right on the river. We were in need of a restful no tech break and it was perfect. We did not use the pool as it was mid winter, but I think it will be even nicer to stay there in Summer. We will be back.

Porcupine Hills Guest Farm and Conservancy epitomises all things country – old painted biscuit tins stacked high on a kitchen shelf, tongue-in-groove ceilings, wooden furniture, gingham and floral fabrics and double cottage pane doors opening out from every room onto wide verandahs and pergola patios. This is big sky country, where outdoor living is a natural part of life.

There is a choice of accommodation, and we stay in the Farmhouse, a classic two bedroom cottage with a long verandah and an attic bedroom upstairs. The lounge has a sprawling couch and fireplace, and there are additional seating areas outside. The kitchen is pretty, with butler sink, wooden table and white painted cupboards. Soft sage bedrooms have white linen and floral curtains and cushions, and white painted cottage pane doors open out from both rooms onto private patios. The bathrooms are surprisingly glamorous and each has a box skylight through which one can see stars at night.

Outside the cottage there is a braai area with benches and reclining loungers. There is a natural style, curved swimming pool with views to forever. Set in the Diepklowe private nature reserve, we are surrounded by high rock cliffs, where Black Eagles soar.

Accommodation Experience
In true country weekend style, we wake early to the sound of birdsong, but fall back asleep and lie in ‘til late. We emerge from our bedrooms at different times during the day, tousled and well rested. Finally we are brought together by the smell of warm flapjacks from the kitchen.

This is the real country magic – a space to rest and become the most natural version of oneself, from which vantage point one can connect with family and friends. In a recent survey, I asked young people “When is your family most peaceful?” The majority of the replies were about holidays, weekends and times when everyone is together. The replies show how stressed and disconnected we are much of the time, and that the recipe for harmony is so simple and achievable. Our stay at Porcupine Hills was precious respite and a lovely memory of family connectedness which we will draw on for many years to come.

We stayed in the Hill House which was spacious, comfortable and well equipped. The house has 3 on-suite bedrooms. One with a shower and the other two with baths. There is also 2 outside showers but they are not very private. Their is multiple places to lounge about. There is a kitchen with a indoors braai. There is a lounge with a fireplace and an open plan dinning room. There is a stoep and a pool as well. The surroundings is spectacularly beautiful and you can have a lovely stroll around the farm. The drive to the farm includes a 20 km stretch on a well maintained dirt road. For that special weekend away with friends or family I would highly recommend Porcupine Hills.

We stayed here for 3 nights. If you are looking for a true country retreat near Cape Town-then this is it. We stayed in the rondavel which has wifi! For city dwellers- a great plus! The rondavel was well equiped and the stay pleasant. The nearby town of Botriver has a quaint little alternative hotel well worth a visit. The farm is furthermore very close to Cape Town. We measured it about 60kms from Somerset West. The farm seems to be a hotspot for mountainbikers and you can see why. Lots of mountainpasses and rivers around to negotiate. Dont bargain on relying on the restaurant for food though. It seems to have closed down. Make sure to bring enough supplies. The nearest town with grocery stores is Villiersdorp and it is a few k's away and mostly gravel road. Annoying if you're tired. Apart from that- great place. I'd like to buy it. :-)

Went to Porcupine Hills with my wife and 15m old son ... we stayed in the "Farm House" which a lovingly restored old house with everything one needs to get by. The owners (recently bought the farm in Dec 2011) are lovely and very excited about their new venture. Great base from which to explore the Elgin wine area. It was olive picking season on the farm so we go stuck in with the workers and trusty dog Rory in picking the produce. Fantastic bird watching as well, with a resident black eagle pair nesting in the rocky outcrops that dwarf the farm. It is not far from the N2 which is the main highway that leads your from Cape Town into the winelands - a great place to stop on your way up the garden route

Room Tip: We stayed in farm house which has 2 ensuite rooms but there are smaller units called the "river...

Porcupine Hills Guest Farm is situated quite far away from the main road but it’s worth the drive. It’s beautifully situated in the Diepklowe Private Nature Reserve and offers various types of accommodation. There’s a farmhouse, the cottage and all the way in the back there are 3 chalets which is where we stayed. Forget about cell phone reception and enjoy the plunge pool in Summer. The chalets are very well appointed and it’s a great get away for a long weekend. Although you can perfectly do self catering, Murray, the owner is a fantastic cook and is happy to prepare breakfast at the farmhouse. We will definitely be back.
