St. Ita's is conveniently located being just off the main road south from Christchurch airport. Rakaia itself is very small - just a couple of shops and two pubs, only one of which was serving food while we were there. The building is nice, and the garden lovely but we found our room a bit shabby. Breakfast was good. The owners had family staying with them during our visit so were naurally a little pre-occupied but we had no complaints about the service.

Thank you Miriam and Ken for a wonderful experience. We stayed only one night, yet we felt we new these people a lifetime. Its a clean and pleasant place that feels like you have stepped back in time with the high ceilings and cosy living space not seen in motel type accomodation.
Will try our best to stay again, maybe next time to do some salmon fishing and get our bottle of wine from Ken!

We stayed here for 2 nights and the experience was wonderful. The hosts are friendly and full of suggestions as to what to see locally - the house and gardens itself are truly stunning - an old period home with lovely large beautifully decorated rooms, including a huge guest lounge which we had to ourselves - it has a good collection of books about the local area which allowed us to identify some plants and birds. Be sure to grab the fabulous booklet outlining a day driving trip - its full of local historical information which made the drive much more meaningful.
The only minor downside is that we had a few flies come in our room - no flywire.

We spent several nights at St Ita's Guesthouse as part of a fishing trip in the South Island back country. The Guest House is a converted former convent school with generously sized rooms, beautifully decorated and maintained in a style appropriate to the age of the handsome early 20th Century building. We found our room, with its pleasant sunny aspect, excellent bed and compact bathroom, particularly comfortable and welcoming.

Rakaia is about an hour from Christchurch on the main south road, with easy access to trout or salmon fishing in the Rakaia, Ashburton and Rangitata rivers and also handy to the Mt Hutt ski field in season. Banks Peninsula is another destination which is easily visited from Rakaia. Our hosts, Miriam and Ken Cutforth, are very knowlegable about the area and their helpful suggestions added greatly to our experience.

A delightful feature of the Guesthouse is the large and beautiful garden full of flowers, vegetables and fruit trees, and their produce can be enjoyed in the form of breakfast jams and preserves. We enjoyed the facilities of the large, comfortable lounge where we were able to meet and socialise with other guests, including a number of independent travellers from overseas who found Rakaia a convenient location to stay at the end of their South Island trip, before flying out from Christchurch.

Miriam and Ken are very warm, welcoming hosts and have made their Guesthouse truly a home away from home
