I had the unique opportunity to stay at Zamek Kliczkow for nearly six weeks. I really enjoyed this somewhat remote area of Poland with beautiful countryside, dotted with small towns like Boleslawiec - famous for its world-renowned pottery! I'll share some of my favorite (and not so favorite) aspects of my stay.
My room was okay. It was somewhat small, a little dark, and a bit outdated. But then again, I wouldn't want the castle to lose its character so I did appreciate the feel it created. I could also look out the window over the moat, which was really neat! The room did come equipped with wired internet, cable TV, and a decent bathroom. Overall, the room served its purpose and I slept well each night for 6 weeks.
Outisde of the room, everything else was fantastic. From the vine-covered beer garden to the grassy moat, the grounds are very well kept. The food was unbelievable. In fact, the dining experiences deserve a paragraph of their own.
The breakfast buffet holds true to the Polish tradition - many hearty choices to pick from including sausage, cold-cuts, eggs, breads, juice, and an abundance of side dishes. Dinner was even better! I still can't forget the salmon over a bed of fresh sauteed spinach and side of rice, perfectly seasoned with a dash of lemon. I also can't say enough about their beef carpaccio with capers. And when it comes to desert, they have THE BEST apple strudel with ice cream you will ever taste, maybe anywhere in the world. I could go on about the soups, wine, etc., but let me move on to the service. The dining service was just as good as the food they served. The wait staff was very professional, courteous, and fun. I have nothing but great things to say about the food, the restaurant decor, and the wait staff here.
The beer garden and courtyard on the inside of the hotel were beautiful. The courtyard has a few benches that make for a great place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine or coffee while talking through the next day's plans.
1.5 hrs drive: Karkonoski National Park. The National Park was unbelievable! We hiked up to the border of the Czech Republic which high up in the mountains. The hike featured stunning views of the mountains, lakes that glistened in the sun, clear-water streams, and beautiful flowers.
15 minute drive: Boleslawiec - the famous pottery town. I sent pottery back to the U.S. so I didn't have to travel with it. Everything showed up in perfect condition!
20 minute drive: Zagan, where the real-life Great Escape took place. If you don't know the story behind The Great Escape in WWII, you should definitely look into this. If you're a military or history buff, this is one of many amazing sites Poland has to offer.
1.5 hrs drive: Wroclaw - another amazing city nearby!
Overall, I had a great experience at this hotel. If I were visiting Poland, I would personally choose a city with more to do and see. But if you want to get away and spend time in a beautiful countryside and enjoy the magic of staying in a castle, this is an excellent place. And if you like exceptional food with exceptional service, you can't go wrong here.
