This is a very nice hotel, with pleasant staff and a stunning location. The pool, beach area and internal landscaping are first rate, and for most that is quite enough. the rooms, at least ours, was spacious, with plenty of closet space and a bathroom with lighting you could really use for shaving, makeup and so forth. The hotel is equipped to handle busloads of tour groups, and that takes away some from its ambiance.

The central problem is one of management. A fine orchestra needs a good conductor; so does a corporation or a hotel. The kind of mistakes we saw here ranged from the mildly annoying to the quite serious. To call this a 5 star hotel, by international standards, is delusional. It is a decent 4 star hotel-and that is a stretch-with a 5 star pool.

The first minor sour note was on arrival. Three friendly people greeted us at the front desk. We were offered a glass of orange juice as we checked in; a nice gesture; except the juice was more like orange drink or Kool-Aid. While freshly squeezed juice would be really sublime, we would have been happy with a decent grade of commercial juice-or water-not industrial grade orange liquid. Still, a minor point.

It was explained that wifi in the public areas is free; and charged by the hour in the room and internet cafe. A minor annoyance again, but absurd that I could use my phone to access the internet on the room porch, but not in the room. When I gave in, and asked for the room wifi, I was told it would only work with a laptop, which I had left home.

the first serious problems were found in the room. The safety card with emergency evacuation instructions was not posted on the door, as is the case in nearly all hotels. Nor was the room rates posted on the door. We had prepaid as we checked in, which seemed to be required, but no matter, the rates should be posted in the room, and seems to be the requirement in most countries. Eventually, we found the emergency instructions, in a glassine envelope in one of the furniture draws. It was a schematic, with no instructions, but we could figure it out easily enough.

I found it rather odd that there was no booklet of information on the hotels offering in the room. I can't remember a 4 or 5 star, or most 3 star hotels without such a written record. There was a booklet on Room Service for meals and nothing else.

There was a FrigoBar with a bottle of wine in it, but no indication how it got there or who it was for. Several natives advised us against drinking the local water, but the hotel made no official statement on this important subject, although water was available for sale in the hotel's Mini-Mart, which wasn't open when we arrived.

After receiving our bags from the wait staff we went down to the dining room to look at the menu. We were told that for dinner there was no menu, only a buffet. From the Room Service menu we had the distinct feeling that this would be international, bland and lacking in much local flair. We prefer to be served, but recognize that many hotels have picked up the habit of having buffets for breakfast to speed things along. To do so for dinner is not consistent with our idea of a high end hotel.

Breakfasts were fine, provided you didn't mind darting between the hordes of people jockeying for position. The omelets were especially good when right out of the kitchen and not too long on the steam table. Fresh fruit and a wide array covered the waterfront, but was slightly better than average-again, except for the dreadful juice served by the barrel full. Decent coffee, provided you got a waiter's attention. They tried hard, but it was sometime like serving an army. Getting the second cup was something of a lottery.

we only had one lunch at the hotel. It was nice to sit out in the sun, and we didn't mind a fairly long wait for rather ordinary club sandwiches. Our waiter delivered the sandwiches, some french fries, which were a little greasy, with a small bowl of ketchup and the statement: "mayonnaise is coming".. MY wife thought that would be nice to dress up a fairly dry sandwich. We waited awhile, and no mayonnaise. I flagged a second waiter, who nodded and want off searching for the condiment. About 10 minutes later, still no mayonnaise, and my wife was unhappy. I went into the dining room, past an unseeing captain, and said to another waiter: "third try: could we have some mayonnaise for our sandwiches?" He said off course, and duly delivered it, about 10 minutes later as we were signing our bill. In the interim, the mayonnaise arrived from either waiter 1 or 2. The incident is perhaps more amusing than annoying, but it illustrates a lack of adult supervision, and would never happen in a real 5 star hotel. IT may also illustrate why they like buffets-where the clients do the serving.

Forget about the mayonnaise. There are other disappointments. The flat screen television is placed behind the room length mirror, across from the bed. This guarantees a lousy picture, even if you turn all the light off in the room and close the drapes. Otherwise, glare from every light in the room. For some odd reason there are speakers in the bathroom, which provide the television's sound better than those in the room.

Quality bathroom fixtures and sink are diminished by faux wood counter tops. Is there a shortage of granite or marble on the island? The room furniture, doors and walls are university dorm grade. A glass over the room length cabinets is practical, and perhaps appropriate for a beachfront hotel, but not a sign of luxury.

The room price, pre-season, is modest, and perhaps reflects a more realistic estimate of the hotel's rating.

There are a number of nice people working here, and I wish them well. We might even stay here again, although we would probably continue to head into town to dine at local restaurants. We have never been part of a tour group, and don't want to be treated like we are in one. As the bags piled up in the lobby the day we left, we felt we were perilously close to being in one.

Very nice location, interior design and pool area. Lovely area, that the hotel is situated in.

Tasteless breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast didn't have the most common things like bacon, scrambled eggs etc. Attitude really bad from some of the staff, especially the restaurant manager that was out right rude to some guests.
I also find it astonishing to read some of the hotels snarky replies to Tripadvisor contributers.

My husband & I spent 5 wonderful nights in alimounda mare and had the time of our life!
The hotel is beautiful and relatively new, very clean and well maintained by a kind and friendly staff. Breakfast is ok and snacks at the hotel bar are satisfying, but the real deal are amazing tavernas all around the town of pigadia, which offer very delicious authentic Greek cousins while enjoying the beautiful ocean view.
The private beach is beautiful and clean with high quality sun beds and shades.
To sum up, we recommend it very much!
