“Enjoyed the pool but not the room”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

I can agree with the reviewer who said this place was designed by someone with megalomaniac tendencies. My room in the villa building at the far end of the hotel was enormous but in all the wrong ways. There is a separate sitting area with small windows that overlook a fountain, armoire and bench for your suitcase in the entryway of the suite. The main room is also enormous with ceiling fan, air conditioning, bed, dressing table with mirror, then large bathroom with both glass shower and bath tub. My initial reaction was that this looked nice. Returning to my room at night I realized half the lights in the shared entryway with the neighbouring suite did not work, nor did half the lights inside my suite. The windows in the sitting area provided no privacy when I was getting clothes out of my suitcase. The air conditioning could not actually be adjusted despite displaying different temperatures and there was no blanket so I alternated between freezing and roasting at night. Later I found out my neighbour, who was also in the group tour with me, used a bath towel to cover herself to keep warm. The air conditioner did not reach into the sitting area so there is no point trying to use except to access your suitcase. The room was huge but still the dressing table was dimly lit. Light switches located everywhere so going to bed was a bit of a trial. On a positive note the pool was clean during my stay, the pool attendants were helpful, the underwater speakers are a novelty and the whole patio area is a pleasant place to relax. The restaurant is located in a separate building near the front lobby. The selection and quality at the breakfast buffet was great but a la carte dinner service was slow and passable. The gift shop accessible from the restaurant had a good selection of clothing but there was no air conditioning wasted here so it was not a pleasant place to spend time while waiting for our food.

Room Tip: Bring a torch to navigate your room.

Nice hotels with spacious, clean and very comfortable rooms. We did not expect as much, it was very good.

Pool is great as well as you can also enjoy the sub marin music that is very nice and fun.

Concerning food, this was more mitigated as it is a big hotel for a lot of tourists so the restaurant is turning to a kind of a canteen. And you have to wait a while if you do not have the buffet. However, except the european meals, food is nice and not expensive.

Finally, a great place even if it not cheap.

We were pre-warned by our tour agent not to expect to much from certain hotels in Sri Lanka particularly those in more remote areas and this definitely made it easier for us to accept the shortcomings of this hotel. The rooms are too large which makes it a tough job for the worn-out air conditioner. Poor lighting throughout the hotel gives it a slightly creepy feel. If you make the mistake of opening the balcony doors like we did, prepare to find some insects in your room. The next morning we realized the hotel is surrounded by plantations or bush hence the many insects and the occasional monkey. Restaurant food and service is quite average. I guess people only stay here due to lack of choices in this area. We were not unhappy to leave early the next day but our departure was delayed as we were not expecting breakfast service to start only at 7.30pm which is really late by international hotel standards.

The hotel was in a convenient location and easily accessible to the Yalla National Park. The rooms set up and structure was good, rooms were spacious and clean, well maintained. Basic amenities were taken care of. Buffet had a good variety with a combination of local and continental spices.
Overall a very good experience. Counter staff was friendly and welcoming.

Stayed for 1 night during my vacation in sri lanka, check in was okay smooth and room were big but slight outdated as seems so big room with lack of basic stuff, AC was poor and bed location was odd, bathroom was good instead of room that's odd, food was mess and had way 3 or 4 option to order for dinner as menu was that small, service was slow and sad, lack of professionalism, overall sleep quality was fine, checkout was smooth and so was billing, buffet breakfast was nice, I suggest not to choose this place unless very much needed, you can choose many good option near yala

I was expecting better from a hotel like this. The rooms are big but it lacks quality and need to be maintained. The restaurant is good.
The pool is big but it doesn't looks good - funny water color.
NOTE: It's impossible to sleep without air conditioned.

We spent only one night in this hotel during our round trip through Sri Lanka. Everything was fine overall, but there are still some areas where the hotel could make improvements:
Why were the beds separated in a couple's room - one thing we didn't understand?! Unfortunately, the electric kettle and the shower door were damaged - the management should look more carefully after such things. The atmosphere of the dining hall wasn't that great - a bit too simplistic, but the food and the service were recommendable.
Great advantages of the Mandara Rosen are its beautiful pool and the atrium leading to different rooms which was leading to different rooms.
