Just back from the Kogalla Beach Hotel . This is a 3 star hotel ! Some of the poor reviews must be from virgin travellers or people expecting a 5 star hotel. The staff were all so good nothing was too much trouble. On arrival i requested a room nearer reception only to be invited into the general managers office who explained that a room was unavailable as all 8 world cup cricket ladies t20 teams were staying here and in the sister hotel The Long Beach. The hotel standard obviously reaches those required for international sports teams . He apologised for being unable to move rooms imediately but offered any room in the hotel when the cricketers left and a free upgrade. He was so helpful.
The food had great variety and the service was fine.
The hotel location is fantastic, 15 mins on the bus to Unawatuna and 25 mins to Mirissa two of the nicest beaches in Sri Lanka.
The view from the pool is amazing out towards the beautiful beach to the sea.
Please remember this is a 3 star hotel in Asia . Fantastic place and will return.

Room Tip: Only 2 floors but a very long hotel so a request for a room nearer reception pool etc is a good idea

If u want just a place to bunk... and you dont care how the room, the service and the food is... this is the place for you...
We had made a reservation and went in and were given 2 rooms at the extreme end of the hotel.. the were facing the sea.. and it was all awesome till we went in.. one room was stinking of rotten fish and other other one has a problem with the A/c. the A/C guy tried his best to get it fixed for over 2 hours and failed. we had to keep bugging the front desk to get a change of rooms and very reluctantly gave us one in the evening. For the smelly one, they clean, washed and sprayed air freshner to no use and ultimately gave a room after about 4 hours of trouble!.
Food was such a flop and the only positive of this palce is the service staff at the restaurant. they were cool.
I would never go there... and would not recommend to anyone.

The hotel and rooms are a bit worn and tired but it's certainly got a nice resort feel. The rooms are a bit dull and need an upgrade. The bar and lounge area looks over the beach and pool area. The beach is right in front and is quite beautiful. If you get the rooms at a good price, then it's an ok place to stay. More like a 2.5 to 3 star hotel.

We have been to Sri Lanka 8 times and this was, by far, the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. The only good part about the hotel was that our room was kept very clean by an excellent housekeeping team, managed by Nimal, who sorted any requests we had regarding the room.

The main problem was the restaurant; it was dark, gloomy, damp and filthy, with disgusting dirty napkins, and 'canteen' plates and cutlery. The staff were miserable and always arguing and swearing, (assuming we didn't understand) and one of them actually referred to a guest as an [--] [--] in Sinhalese. The food was bland and looked awful, and was frequently luke warm, and congealing. One beef stew closely resembled Pedigree dog food. We were 'all inclusive' but we ate out most evenings as the we couldn't face the restaurant for three 'meals'. The restaurant managers did not seem interested at all, and things only improved for two days whilst there was a Tourist Board conference in the hotel. Most of the food is left uncovered, so the flies were able to feed on it as they wished. Consequently we had had a very expensive trip to the doctors for three cases of tummy upsets, the first we have ever had in 8 visits to Sri Lanka.

The pool had several sharp broken tiles and broken dangerous fittings and steps, and a permanent 'scum' line round the water level. The sunbeds were very tatty and close to falling to pieces. The garden area was not cared for, and there were frequently branches and fruits falling from the trees close to sunbathers. There was also a pack of wild dogs that hung round all day, friendly, but often noisy fighting and barking at night, waking us up. We tried the pool at Long Beach, which was OK, but were put off by seeing children in the water without nappies or bathing costumes.

Other minor niggles were that we had no hot water for two days, the restaurant musicians were awful and hung aroung expecting a tip, there was no one to serve in the pool bar for most of the day, and we were constantly pestered by a man wanting to read our palms for 1500 rupees. The security guards were scrounging money, drinks cigarettes and one used to stand leering at everyone sunbathing. We were entitled to a free massage, but it was too complicated to book, and guests were sent all over to get a ticket. The ones who managed it said the spa area was filthy, so we didn't bother.

We used this hotel as a base to explore better hotels and guest houses in the surrounding area. I would recommend that if you travel to this area then head to Unawatuna for good food, hospitality and holiday atmosphere, as this hotel has non of that. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone I liked.

A nice hotel situated on the long beaches of the Indian Ocean.
Comfortable rooms, very friendly staff, nice food with lots of choice.
The long walks along the white beaches of the Indian Oceans I liked the most !
Also I enjoyed the boat ride on Koggala Lake, visitIng the Somawathi Orphanage and the city Galle. A good three star hotel with good service and value for money.

We have travelled many times to Sri lanka, having experienced a different area& hotel on each visit.
We were so disappointed with koggala Beach hotel.
The room we had was kept very clean, daily, by our excellent room boy, however the general fabric of the room was poor, the window frames and door fittings urgently needed painting and the catches repairing.
The biggest problem we experienced was in the restaurant, hot food was cold , totally chaotic service, long queues.
The general waiting staff were very willing, but there seemed to be a total lack of direction from the management for the staff.
The area around the hotel was clean , however there was a terrible shortage of serviceable sun beds and chairs.
We used the local tuk-tuks to visit Galle, Welligama,Mirrisa and enjoyed all our jaunts.
We again travelled with Mercury Direct, and this was the first time we have had any problems with the hotel they used.
It won't stop us from visiting Sri lanka again, but we will not be using this hotel.

Room Tip: Go for a room in the new section of the hotel, Long beach, this is adjacent to Koggala Bech and is...
