A lovely hotel with stunning views on the Indian ocean,a spectacular beach on your feet, big swimming pool, good food and nice and clean rooms decorated in a plane but modern style. It's an oasis where you least expect it.We were two couples with our kids, one couple stayed in one of the rooms, all overlooking the ocean, and we stayed in a suite.Quite spectacular! It worths every single penny. The kids loved it,they spend all their time in the huge swimming pool drinking spectacular fresh juices together with their parents of course who were sitting on it's deck watching the endless ocean until the sun set when you could walk on the beach and see the typical fisherman sitting on their sticks!Amazing! The hotel organized for us a morning excursion with breakfast boxes for whale watching which was spectacular and then one afternoon they organized for all kids in the hotel to take the new born sea turtles and depose them in the ocean...You can easily drive to Galle in the afternoon to wonder in the typical old town and have dinner there and then go back to the hotel and wake up next morning in paradise.A big thank you to everyone in this hotel who made the end of our 10 days trip so memorable!

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor have better views but rooms on the ground floor also looking the ocean are...

Fortress was great. Loved the ambience and the crab tree amenities :) So much space for my little toddler to wonder around. Keep it up.

We went to The Fortress with Virgin Holidays over April 2012.

We booked into The Fortress for 14 nights. The trip cost in excess of £7000!

No doubt about it, the location is outstanding.

However, the quality of the rooms and hygiene of the hotel is appalling. On our third night, our party and three other parties contracted food poisoning from eating in the restaurant. The hotel doctor was called out and he diagnosed Gastroenteritis, which is caught from poor food preparation and or from poor drinking water and poor cleaning water. Three days of our trip were completely ruined and although at the time, the hotel admitted full liability and tried to keep us quiet, no compensation has been paid. In fact, even though we have proof from their own doctor and three other parties with confirm that they also had food poisoning, the hotel is now denying the whole incident. Virgin Holidays haven't really helped despite their rep on site being fully aware of the problems and despite all of the correct reports having been filed. It seems that now we are back in the UK, all evidence of the serious issue has gone.

Gastroenteritis is a serious bug to catch and in some countries can lead to much worsening conditions if not treated.

My family were on antibiotics for 5 days, anti sickness tablets and they couldn't eat or function properly.

The hotel admitted full liability and a number of the other guests were also apologised to and given free food and drinks as the hotel did not want to be shut down by the tourist board or health board.

We were assured compensation by the management. However, they have now denied the whole incident and I am taking action against them as I have documented proof.

In addition, whilst the rooms have good facilities, like an iPod dock, the rooms are old. The bathrooms and toilets have rot in the corners and the walls of the room are damp. Overall, hygiene and maintenance is seriously lacking. See pictures.

There are squirrels everywhere you go. They jump on your tables for food and bother you all day. After all, these are rats with tails and the hotel does absolutely nothing to get rid of these issues.

I would definitely go to Sri Lanka again. Had the hotel actually compensated us for poisoning us, I would have put it down to a mistake on their part and would have gone to The Fortress again, once they had refurbished their rooms. However, after this incident, I would not recommend the hotel to anyone.

Having recently stayed at the Fortress Galle for 10 days I can honestly say we enjoyed our stay.
The Hotel however is not quite 5* - maybe a 4* or 4*+.
It is a very impressive building and the rooms are airy, comfortable and clean.
The food is good but not excellent and breakfast is the weakest of all meals.
Staff are polite and helpful although service can fluctuate!
Pool is good but we have experienced better and the surrounding grounds can look a bit worn.
All in all - very comfortable and lovely escape from the hustle and bustle outside the doors!

This is the second time we have visited the Fortress and could not have been happier with the experience.

This hotel is an oasis in a vibrant, topsy turvey country, the standards are high and the expense is definately worth it. We had been travelling for 10 days before we arrived and were ready for the luxury and pampering we received at the Fortress.

The attention to detail, amazing staff, excellent food and breath taking loction would put this in my top 5 best ever hotels. Possibly even the very best!

It is a small hotel with large modern rooms, excellent sea views (we were in room 42) and would definately stay in that location again. The quality of the restaurant is fantastic with plenty of choice. We went out 2 or 3 times and had room service on a couple of occasions, leaving the hotel is like going from the sublime to the ridiculous; venturing out from the tranquility of the fortress walls into the excitement of the roads, the hustle and bustle of local towns, the amazing sights and smells of day to day Sri lankan life, truly amazing. On your return, stepping through the fortress gates into heaven once again.

We will definately return again next year, we rekindled our love once again in Sri Lanka, especially at the Fortress!!

Room Tip: We prefer the first floor ocean view rooms.

The sea view rooms are very well located with an excellent view of the sea across the large pool. The entire concept of Dutch style tall pillars around a large courtyard adds character to "The Fortress" hotel. The staff are all very helpful and friendly and the restaurant serves a great selection of meals. There are plenty of common areas to laze around and relax overlooking the ocean. A huge advantage is also the close proximity of the hotel to the new Southern Highway, which allows you to get to the hotel in less than two hours from the city of Colombo. That's what we all said when we walked through the big gates and caught the sight and smell of the sea. This hotel is to die for! Perfect mix of modern minimalist style and old fashioned pampering. The attention to detail and service is exceptional. The open plan eating & reception areas allow for the breeze to pass through so you're never too hot or even cold from a/c. The ocean-front rooms are worth the extra cost - just beautiful ! What with a super view and comfy reading/TV corner it is hard to drag yourself away. The pool is big for hotel standards, plenty of loungers around the pool & garden, immaculate lawns, the sound of the waves crashing onto the beach constant. We had an extra bed placed in the room for our daughter; a proper single bed with decent mattress, not the usual flimsy campbed some hotels provide. Dinner was good, not too expensive, presentation beautiful, menu could do with being more varied. Such a gorgeous hotel. Go and enjoy, spoil yourself.

Room Tip: Ask for ocean view room, best if away from restaurant.
