“Brilliant Boutique Hotel”
Reviewed 12 February 2013

I have a preference these days for boutique hotels as opposed to large corporate ones. Staff quickly get to know you and service tends to be more personal and this is certainly the case with the Fortress. Completed in 2007 this is still a relatively new hotel and this shows in the decor and fitments. We had 7 nights in a Fortress room and 1 in a ground floor sea view. The Fortress rooms open onto a garden on the ground floor which is about 5 m long with a 7 metre high wall at the end which can be quite claustrophobic so if you can afford it get one of the rooms facing the sea (various rates and specs). Food and drink is not that expensive for a five star but still twice that of local restaurants. We paid around GBP80 for 3 courses a l c with a bottle of wine and less (about 60) on the buffet nights. Food was good quality and the Sri Lankan dishes very good. There were a couple of theme nights in the Pepper restaurant sea food and Sri Lankan. Rooms were very large with equally roomy bathrooms. Our Fortress room was about 9 x 5 metres with a very comfortable super king bed but why do hotels put only one chair in bedrooms for 2 people? If you want to have a drink in the room or watch one of the free loan DVD's or a bit of telly someone has to sit on the bed!! The sea view room was slightly smaller but being on the ground floor had French windows opening onto the lawn which stretched down to the sea. Handy position for tuk-tuk (about LKR 1000 return) to Unawatuna tourist area where there a many local budget priced restaurants. All in all a very comfortable hotel with helpful friendly staff.

Room Tip: If you have to have a Fortress room try for a corner one. Room 22 is massive.

We are on our last day of a 9 night stay in the Fortress. We have had a superb relaxing stay in a fabulous spacious ocean view room. Just fabulous to sleep with the sound of waves in the distance. Restaurant food was faultless, we ate lots of fish and the Fortress curry special is a must.
Everything was spotlessly clean, the towels and bed linen all had an aromatherapy fragrance to them. There is a large free standing bath with massage jets which was heavenly !
Although, outside of the hotel there is virtually nothing to visit and quite dangerous to walk, we were happy to just stay around the hotel and took a tuk tuk to nearby Unawatuna, to the king fisher restaurant a couple of times which took approx. 15 mins.
We had massages and pedicures which were fabulous. Would definitely stay here again. Hotel has won lots of awards which are on display and is part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Next stop Maldives for 4 nights!

Room Tip: All rooms are fabulous but we had an Ocean view which was upstairs. Ground floor had access onto th...

We stayed at the Fortress for five nights at the end of our tour of Sri Lanka and we did save the best until the last, this hotel is fantastic. On arrival you are given a tour of the hotel and then shown to your room, which is the largest room ever with a bed 8ft by 8ft, a lounge area with plasa tv, ipod, dvd player etc and the most beautiful bathroom with a jacuzzi bath, huge shower, his & her wash basins. We had an ocean view room which is on the upper floor which is well worth paying the extra for. The staff are amazing, you are treated like royalty, they cannot do enough for you, each evening they come to your room to do turn down service and bring you cookies! We stayed on bed & breakfast basis, and chose the Al Carte menu in the evening, the food was 1st class and not expensive. It is very easy to book excursions, the beach has the softest sand ever, tuk tuks are right across the road and very cheap to have a tour of galle. We did the Whales & dolphins trip, very good but also very rough so be aware if you suffer from sea sickness. This hotel is the BEST hotel we have ever stayed and probably the best we will ever stay in, we would definitely go back.

We recently returned from a two week stay at The Fortress Hotel. It was one of the most pleasant and relaxing holidays we've ever had.I've never experienced such happy, smiling staff, from the waiters and waitresses in the restaurants to the guys who set the sunbeds up every day. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful, the food is excellent and nothing was too much trouble for anyone. The reception and staff at the gate carefully monitored guests movements to and from the hotel on trips etc,all tuk tuk and taxi drivers were known by the hotel so we felt we were in safe hands every time we left the premises. We stayed in an Ocean View room which was large, well kitted out with a Bose sound system,an i pod loaded with Hindu chill out music, and all the extras expected in a hotel of this quality.
I would return to this hotel at the drop of a hat and in my humble opinion, anyone who is unimpressed with its service and quality must be tired of life. Bryn and Elaine Hilton.

Room Tip: The Ocean View rooms are worth paying for,the best rooms overlook the garden and beach.Ours overlook...

Don't let the name put you off, this is anything but a fortress.
All rooms face the Indian ocean and are spacious and superbly fitted out, the bathroom area is larger than most ordinary hotel rooms!

The infinity pool must be olympic size and is brilliantly lit at night.

Squirrels roam the grounds.

The evening meal is usually a themed smorgasbord e.g, seafood and is exceptional.

The staff are courteous and nothing is too much trouble. The Hotel is close enough to Galle to visit easily.

A long languid beach stretches to the North, great for a dip and bodysurfing ( don't be put off by the large Eastern Europeans in G-Strings!).

A great place to stay and wind down and its easy to be tempted not to venture out

Third time here and it just keeps getting better.......

I almost don't want to say too much as it is such a great hotel, in the most amazing country, that if too many of you hear about it we may find it hard to book again next year!

We took our 20 year old son this time and he loved it. He didn't mind that it is quiet because the sheer luxury, superb service, great food and beautiful rooms more than compensated. He normally avoids massages but booked numerous treatments at the spa, a big compliment to them, and he loved visiting the well equipped gym everyday.

Well done The Fortress, excellent holiday yet again...... we will be back!

One important point. You will find that getting hold of a reliable tuctuc driver is not always easy so we would certainly recommend local tuctuc driver, Chamara, we have used him over the last few years and originally met on the beach. He is excellent, trustworthy, a good driver, always finding us great bargains and very reasonably priced. We went on a number of tours with him, that included whale watching, turtle hatchery, tea plantation, diving, shopping and numerous dinner trips. Please contact me directly if you would like me to send his contact details.

Room Tip: Ocean front room on the upper level.

The Fortress is immaculate it's really impressive, only 53 rooms so plenty of space for the guests. The room was huge and very impressive but unfortunately we were given one of the few rooms without a sea view. our room faced a big mouldy wall, there was a ladder outside and some black sheeting to the left, all they need to do is paint the wall and tidy it up a bit. The food was massively expensive. We also had a banging noise in our room which woke us up every hour during the night. We opened all the doors thinking it may be a door banging. By the time we tracked the noise down to the air conditioning unit it was a bit late as we'd had two sleepless nights. We reported it and asked for some money off but they didn't seem to believe us to start with. They paid for our lunch which was nice but when you're paying £250 a night you don't expect to be kept awake. I think a reduction would have been a nice gesture. Apart from that the place is stunning, lovely to sit by the pool and walk up the beach.
