Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 22 April 2013

We just returned after a week stay at The Fortress.
On the whole, we much enjoyed our stay in this 'Small Luxury Hotel'.
I don't think that readers of trip advisor like to read long stories, so I prefer to enumerate the positive and rather negative impressions.
First, the positive side:
* the building of the hotel is very characteristic with a stylish combination of old Dutch colonial + Sri Lankese architecture and design
* the standard room (Fortress Room) was very spacious and comfortable (with several stylish design elements such as very beautiful hardwood flooring) with several amenities such as a well equiped Bose music installation
* the majority of the staff members were very helpful and friendly
* the situation of the hotel at the shore is lovely; it's also possible to make long strolls alongside the beach
* there is a beautiful (however small) garden around the swimming pool
* we could appreciate the Heat restaurant; nice cuisine, there is a good choice of affordable wines
The rather negative points which need some improvement:
* having said that the room was very stylish, we must admit that the furnishing of the bathroom (bath, chests...) lacked an ergonomic approach
* when you really hate a limited view from your room, you should better take an ocean or beach room; the Fortress Room only offers a rather stupid view at a high wall, and it was too hot to sit there
* there are certainly not enough seats outside the restaurant area allowing you to have a drink (coctail/apéritif) in the evening
* the restrooms of the main restaurant could bear some air-cooling given the tropical heat
* when we made reservation for The Fortress (half board), we tought that dinner was always to choose from the menu: it seemed however that there was very (to) often a buffet. When taking something à la carte, you have to pay a supplement ....

Room Tip: Better take an ocean or beach room! Avoid the Fortress Room when you desires an open view!

This hotel charged 5-Star prices yet was completely unable to live up to the standards of 5-star establishment.

If we hadn't of paid for our 5night stay up front, we would have left on the second day.

Being over priced only made the constant carelessness of the staff & management more apparent.

The Fortress was a daily disappointment - regularly backed up with example after example of an establishment that is in dire need of attention - both to its rooms &more so to its staff training and customer care.

We stayed for 5nights in a 'Beach Splash' room, which is conveniently placed on ground level making the pool & sea easily accessible.
However coming & going from the back door which lead to the pool was difficult as they did not supply back door keys to lock our rooms when needed.
One of the many simple details overlooked.

We had a 'plunge pool' in our room which made for a very dank smell and a constant dampness that ended up seeping through all our belongings.

Certain features and appliances did not always work due to perhaps wear & tear in our room.
The room itself was tired, with cracked walls, moldy curtains, and gathering dirt on corners and ridges that no attention was paid too.

Our bathroom was huge, but nowhere to hang towels within easy reach, or enough hooks for both towels & bathrobes.
The toilet is behind a frosted glass screen next to the shower which doesn't make for pleasant sharing of the bathroom.

The entire room itself felt like a huge cell, poorly decorated with awkward facilities an cheap structure.

The only charm of the hotel aesthetics laid in the entrance to the hotel, which linked immediately to the hotel bar/Restaurant.
Unfortunately the hotel bar is more like someone’s breakfast bar.
It's completely unappealing as an evening spot for cocktails or drinks.
However the breakfast 'hoppers' were a wonderful way to start the day – the food we had here was by far some of the best!

On entrance to breakfast each morning we were greeted with: "is everything OK with your room" which we fast learnt was a rhetorical question masked with a equally fake smile.
We once asked for a dehumidifier which fast turned into being a request dismissed by the floor manager who said she would to look into the problem but never did.
The next morning, she asked the same question, we replied that nothing had changed & she simply continued onto the next table.

The service was constantly disappointing, with forgotten orders, slow service and laziness shown in the lack of attention.
I can quite genuinely say The Fortress harboured some of the most appalling service I have ever seen - again, often forgiven when accompanied by the big smiles that came with it, but this slowly wore off as the same mistakes were made repeatedly and without real consideration to the patron.
It embarrassing how much skill and care the staff lacked.

The amazing Spa massages and their fantastically tasty food were The Fortresses only redeeming factors.

If you do stay here, we absolutely recommend the Balinese massage and some of the traditional Auervedic massages.

Hotel looks wonderful, the pools area is great, and its lovely with the sea just in front of you.
Rooms are great as long as you have one over looking the sea. A couple of them look over to a wall.Check before you go. It has a restaurant where you are able to sit in the open air, shade or sunshine or inside.Breakfast was good but dinner expensive, and not a lot of it. Staff are attentive, but don't seem bothered to put themselves out any more than necessary.A good area to swim in the sea. not very near any thing else.
Good gym and spa. Back massage was very good.

Just magical, to come from our 18 month winter and end up here after ten days touring sril Lanka was just magical. You name it this place does it to perfection, rooms, service, drinks, food, views, pool, spa.......... Expensive but you pay for what you get and here you get perfection. I have never seen such staff, just brilliant.

Aesthetically you cannot fault this hotel - it's beautiful new and really a 5 star hotel. The reason we didn't give it a 5 star is because we prefer smaller more intimate hotels which we experienced during our trip up until our stay at the fortress. The property has 50 rooms therefore it's difficulty to get that intimate atmosphere that you would in a 9 room guest house.

Other than that you cannot fault the hotel - it has a huge pool, it's by the beach. Our suite was brand new with all the modern amenities you would want and the food and buffet was excellent. In terms of price this is the most expensive hotel we came across during our 2 week holiday but it is to be expected as it is a 5 star hotel.

Room Tip: Our room was on the ground floor which means you can see the other guests walking to and from the po...

Great location for a few days crashed by the sea/pool after four days in the tea country.

It was very hot and humid, but that's hardly the hotel's fault. A/C in rooms excellent, lying in bed looking over the sea hoping that there won't be another tsunami is lots of fun.

Restaurant was good with enough variety and theme nights for a six night stay. Food Asian European fusion.

Gym with TVs (free CD library) and A/C was good.

A little soul-less at times but great over all and by far the best hotel in the area.

Take a tuk tuk to Galle for the day. DON'T take the bus, the adrenalin rush is not fun, it's bloody dangerous!

Just returned from a week in the fortress with wife and 2-kids. Overall an excellent stay.

The service was first class, food and facilities great, with extremely friendly staff. The half board option we took was certainly worthwhile. The kids loved the pool (though neads a little maintenance), the beach was second to none for turtle watching. The hotel is located in a great spot for sightseeing in galle, marissa & yala etc.
