We stayed at the Fortress 4th-7th April 2013 after much deliberation where to stay in Sri Lanka. My wife and I have been together fro 15 years and travelled quite a bit on holidays accumulating a fair spectrum of experiences, good and bad. But we were both knocked out by the Fortress and unanimously agreed that for once the idyllic picture painted in the brochures and the reality weren't out of step. It genuinely is a stunning hotel, probably more suited to couples than families but as long as your kids (like ours) loves the Water you can get away with it. We didnt find the restaurant as expensive as we expected reading previous reviews, not cheap either but we ate their in the daytime and ventured to nearby Unawatuna to eat at the Beachside restaurants much more cheaply in the evenings. Getting to Unawatune and Galle is easily available by Tuk-Tuk and we quickly cemented a deal with a local driver directly over the road for what amounted to £5-£10 a day to have him at your beck and call. He was fantastic and was happy to ship us around to any local spot, took us to a fantastic Spice Forest next to Koggala Lake about 5 minutes from the hotel. Staff at the Fortress very friendly and generally helpful, i understand what fellow reviewers have said about a lack of prompt service but if you nag nicely everything happens on spec. The food itself was wonderful on the one occasion we stayed for the evening meal. If you can i'd try for a Room with Balcony overlooking the pool and Beach as view is beautiful and sundowners at the Fortress against a sunset is truly memorable.

Room Tip: Room 43 (and those adjacent) for excellent views of the Beach/Pool

Wonderful hotel right on the beach, the rooms combine sophistication with a real Sri Lankan atmosphere. Food is excellent with some beautifully prepared Sri Lankan, Thai and European dishes combined with efficient but friendly service. Highly recommended for a beach holiday with a true Sri Lankan feeling.

Just try to get a room here if you want a real 5 star hotel experience. We normally stay in hotels like Kempinski... And even they are not to compare.

In front of the hotel sea turtles are swimming and we saw the most beautiful fishes.

Would be an excellent hotel to give a wedding.

This hotel is one of the best hotels have had the pleasure of staying in. Staff, food, service, rooms were all first class. Rooms were fantastic, beach front, balcony ground floor, with the aromas of spice filling the air, the beds were heavenly. Stayed at the end of our 16 day holiday in 2012, for 6 nights
Missing the place a lot, will definatley return, once the teenagers want to do there own thing!!!!!! Very soon i hope

Room Tip: Beach front rooms are a must!!!!!

We stayed here for 6 nights at the end of our trip to Sri Lanka, and it was amazing. After being shown to our room, we were pleasantly surprised to find that we had been upgraded and had a plunge pool in the corner! Fortunately, they turn the pump off in the evening so it didn't ruin the sound of the waves outside. The room was large, with Bose sound system, iPod, Nespresso machine, as well as a massive bathroom, with Jacuzzi bath. We were also able to walk out the front to the gardens and pool area.
The pool man was great, and kept us the same beds each day, and you're given a flag to get the bar staff's attention when you need it. The other staff were very attentive as well - we were asked every morning how we slept, how are room was, and if there was anything else they could do for us.
We ate at the hotel every lunchtime as there isn't anywhere else nearby for approx £20 per day, and had dinner one night too. We opted for the buffet as it was a BBQ night, and the food was brilliant - definitely a higher standard than other buffets we had, but more expensive. The other nights we picked up a tuk tuk from across the road to take us to Unawatuna (R1200) or Galle (R2000).

Room Tip: Definitely worth paying the extra to get a sea view.

We popped in to The Fortress for Lunch on Poya Day and I really thought their buffet was one of the better ones we had in Sri Lanka. The selection was excellent, the food was very fresh and there was a choice of locations to sit...in air conditioning, under the terrace or in the sunshine. Sitting near the pools and looking over the sea is a beautiful setting. I liked the entrance to the hotel and it is worth a visit even if you are not staying thre. I think next time I might check in for a few days R&R as the pool loungers looked very comfortable.

We stayed here for 2 nights at end of our Sri Lanka journey. The hotel was beautifully constructed and designed in modern Dutch & Portuguese style. As soon as you enter the "Fort Wall", we felt like as if we had been a tropical paradise. We booked the Beach room, located on the ground floor, which gave us easier access to the pool and beach. The room was very spacious and well furnished with Bose sound system. It was definitely worth the extra money!

The spa was an lovely experience. We had massages in one of the couple treatment rooms. The area was very peaceful and that certainly helped you recharge yourself. The staff there was very friendly and helpful.

There were not much local restaurants near the hotel. Therefore, we dined at Heat mostly during our stay. It did offer a variety of international menu - woodfire oven pizza and grilled seafood were good options for lunch. We did try the seafood platter one night but it was somewhat disappointing. It was not as fresh as we thought it would be, given it was located right next to the coast.

This hotel is definitely a great option if you prefer a more private and exclusive beach resort experience. It is within 15 minute ride to the Galle town and get away from the main beach crowds.

Room Tip: Beach room on the ground floor would be best to access to the beach, pool and lawn.
