After trundling all around the country for 2 weeks, we were grateful to spend a few days relaxing here. Rooms were beautiful, modern and spacious. We had a nice view of the ocean. The restaurant, pool, and common areas were gorgeous. I especially loved the twinkling lights in the pool in the evening - looked like stars! We were considering staying at the Amangalla, but glad we stayed here as the property was more relaxing - overlooking the ocean and not in the middle of the town and much cheaper.

We only found a couple issues with the resort. First the food was not so great; however, the drinks and ambiance at the restaurant were quite good. Second, the beach was not usable - there were "danger: no swimming" signs posted. The water is very rough and it appears that the 2004 tsunami eroded a large part of the beach - waves come right up to the wall fronting the resort on a normal day. Also, all the beaches in Sri Lanka must be public as there were groups of people standing by the gate from the resort to the beach ALL DAY trying to sell all manner of things to guests. It was impossible to even take a walk on the beach without them following and harassing you the entire time. In fact, it became a bit of a joke because they were there staring up at our room as soon as we got up in the morning to after dark. They would look for people to appear in the window or outside near the beach and then start frantically motioning and yelling at you in Sinhalese.

Would recommend to stay here vs. Galle to decompress. Galle is only a 10min drive away for a day trip. Modern highway (best road in the country!) ensures Colombo is less than 2 hours away.

Room Tip: Avoid getting a room at the far north end of the beach - this is in front of the gate where the beac...

We stayed at the Fortress for a week as part of our Honeymoon, what an incredible place, there is nothing to fault at all. Our room was upgraded as we were on Honeymoon, we had a balcony overlooking the ocean so we had stunning views. The staff are extremely attentive to your every need and nothing is too much bother for them. Even the laundry service should get a mention as it was first class !! All shirts were beautifully folded, wrapped in soft paper and placed in a wicker box !
We weren't too sure how the weather would be in September but it was in the 30's all week.
We booked one trip to a safari park with the Travel Bag rep and avoided the Elephant orphanage due to the horrible reviews. Please read these reviews, all is not what the reps would have you believe. The safari was great, loads to see including Elephants in their natural habitat.
The rep did try and put us off using the local guides and to be fair you have got to be careful but shouldn't be avoided, it's part of enjoying a different culture. We got a tuk tuk one evening outside the hotel and we agreed a price for the return trip before we left. There is always room for haggling though ! We paid 1800 Rupee (around £8.40) for a return to Galle. It soon became apparent that we had picked a decent driver, excellent English and was more than happy to hang around while we went wondering ! We also went with him the next day to the Fortress in Galle and the White tea plantation. He was an excellent guide and showed us many more sights than we could have imagined. We negotiated 3500 Rupee (£16.40) but if we had booked through the rep we would halve paid around 5 times as much. His local knowledge is amazing - senatourskoggala@gmail.com
In short, our stay at the Fortress has been amazing, it really is an incredible place to stay.

Just stayed at the fortress for I think my 10th time. Probably my favourite place on the planet.
Great staff, great food and the ocean is incredible. Not to forget the pool!

Asela and team are just brilliant and more hotels should aspire to be like this.

The Fortress was our last stop in Sri Lanka after travelling around a fairly typical route, it was easily the best of all we stayed at but it was also the most expensive. However the standard was so high it was worth it and if anyone was heading for just a week to Sri Lanka I think the experience won't disappoint - if you are going to charge a premium to the local relative pricing you have to deliver and I think they do. From the street you can't see anything except for the perimeter wall, but once inside the rest of the world fades away - the welcome from the staff is the first of a consistent experience of excellence. The weather while we were there was overcast and stormy but didnt really matter. Maybe it was that weather but while we were here and in the Heritance Ahungalle the sea was very rough and you could not swim in it (red flags up) so we were glad to use the pool. The Ocean Room we had was large - the bathroom is set behind the bedroom area as you come in the door with a separate large bath and large shower area. The were wooden floors throughtout and great toiletries and towels. The large bed was on a raised platform (same level as the bathroom) with a couple of steps down to a couch area where the large flatscreen tv is. There was also a Bose system with an iPod in place with a range of music. There are various open areas to sit and read a book and the restaurant and bar area overlooks the sea. Unusual in our experience in SL the restaurant was a la carte (rather than buffet style) and there was no comparison in quality. However I would look for any deals on all inclusive as we were on a B&B basis as eating and drinking here does add materially to your bill if you are staying for a week or longer. It must be said that although included the breakfast was excellent - a mixture of prepared options and a range of things to order from the waiter. We also enjoyed using the spa - the complimentary Jet Lag massage was enough to convince us to book another few sessions. I'd definitely struggle to book anywhere else if we returned, we had already seen alot of this lovely country so this stop was perfect to just relax and unwind.

Room Tip: If you have decided on your trip well in advance there are some good offers. We availed of a free up...

We were lucky to have rented a private villa on Koggala Lake - about 10 minutes from the Fortress. We had a pool but we didn't have the ocean - and The Fortess had both so....
... on two days we spent the day at the Fortress, by their pool and the ocean.
Fantastic.
Great, very friendly service (they did charge to use the pool but it was really worth it).
Great location.
Great, very large pool.
Lovely beach to walk along, with turtles swimming by the small reef off the hotel wall.
As I say we had a villa - BUT if we hadn't I'd certainly have given the Fortress a try.

We have just returned from srilanka after a week touring then a week in the wonderful Fortress Resort. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we felt like royalty. We had an Ocean room, which was huge, a 7ft by 7ft bed and the sheets were changed daily. As for the daily petal decorations on the bed you felt guilty getting in. They also had an evening turning down service and towels were changed twice a day the amenities in the room from the sound system to the toiletries, luxury bedding I could go on and on. But the best bit was the view from our balcony with the infinity pool lined by palm trees and the Indian Ocean beyond, just heavenly. The staff were fantastic as soon as your cup or glass were empty they were there, if you wanted a sunbed they knew before you did and it was prepared for you. I can't speak more highly of them all. The food was great the fillet steak to die for. They have a Srilankan night once a week it was superb, what a spread. We were half board but for those who were bed and breakfast it was expensive to eat in the evening. The only criticism is that the drinks were so expensive it was silly. But on the bright side we cut down on the drinking so every cloud and all that.

Room Tip: Get a Tuk Tuk driver to take you to a beer shop and stock up your fridge with cheap booze

After a 2 week tour around the country , we arrived with 3 kids to this hotel and it must be said it looks like heaven. The place looks even better than the pictures you will see in any magazine or on the net. Pool and sea area including scenery are fantastic. There are great food options for kids and i was a bit worried that the sea was rough but it turns out there is a small secluded beach area protected by rocks in the sea so you kids can enjoy a safe swim in the ocean( my kids are 16 14 and 10)
The staff is trying to please and serve us in an amazing way !
