“Fabulous Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2014

My wife and I visited Sri Lanka in August last year. We choose The Fortress for the first week of our honeymoon but didn't really know what to expect.
You arrive at the hotel through two large gate, I was taken aback by the view through the hotel over the Laccadive Sea. You are greeted by friendly staff with a wonderful cocktail and the 5 star service continues until the moment you leave.
We had have a wonderful ocean view room, everything about the hotel had a feeling of quality. Our room was filled with the tech people are accustomed too at home from an iPod filled with music to a brilliant jacuzzi bath. I'd go as far as saying it is one of the best hotel rooms I've ever stayed in.
As mentioned the staff are excellent and so is the food. There is a diverse menu with something to suit everyone. My wife and I also paid a little extra to have a meal under the star which was very romantic. Breakfast is all wonderful with a vast array of options and if there isn't something to suit a guest one of the chefs will make you something of your own choice.
The hotel also has a spa which has numerous treatments to choose from. Me and my wife had an excellent full body massage.
I would have no hesitation recommending The Fortress anyone, it is a fantastic hotel in an absolutely stunning country.

Room Tip: Aim to get an ocean view, it's more than worth the money.

We stayed at the Fortress in February for 11 nights and had a wonderful time. We booked this holiday through Destinology who arranged for us to have private transport to the hotel using the
express road which took us just over two hours. This is a new road direct to Galle from Colombo another road which will be direct access to Kandy as from 2015 which will cut the journey timeotherwise I believe it would take about 4 hours to get there. I understand they are building
by half. If you decide to go direct to Galle like we did it is not possible to do Kandy in a day, it really is an overnight stop. We did two day trips whilst we were there which was to Yala National park which was organised by the Fortress together with an English speaking driver and a new car for £200. . We were picked up at 8 am as we did not fancy getting up at 4am to see the elephants feeding. This price included going into the park for about 3-4 hours in your own private jeep and a English speaking driver who was very good. Our driver took us to a nice fish restaurant for lunch before we entered into the park. . We saw lots of animals and had a very good day there.
Our other day trip was to Uda Walawe national park which is mainly elephants however we did see three leopards which made our day. We arranged this trip with Sunimal who is a local man who walks up and down the beach trying to get business. His prices are cheaper and we stipulate new car as we don't want him turning up in an old banger,in event the car was brand new, however his driver does not speak English so Sunimal will come along for the ride and of course everyone has a baby and will try and get lunch out of you , drinks I don't mind .Sunimal is a very nice man and can be trusted but we did prefer going with the hotel as we learnt more about Sri Lanka and our driver was lovely, such a nice man and you do feel more at ease We booked Yala through Chani at reception who looked after us through our stay. We found her to be most helpful and could not do enough for you The staff at the hotel is first class and is all about giving a great service. Our thanks also to Samith on reception again great service. From the moment we drew up outside the hotel and they opened the big oak doors it was" WOW" The view was stunning just like a picture postcard it all flowed it to one sea, sun loungers, pools, gardens, and reception. We booked a fortress room with a balcony but we were told at the time of booking that the fortress rooms over looks on to a brick wall, its hard to believe when you have a balcony, yes we had table and chairs and a tree in front of us but because of the wall there was not much light coming in so we did not bother to sit out on the balcony. If this does not bother you then the fortress rooms are good with high ceilings bath, showers and toilet and everything you would want in a bedroom. If you can afford to pay the extra then the ocean rooms are lovely with patio doors which opens on to the gardens but if you don't want people walking pass then
then the upper floor level is better. We went half board at the hotel which included the a la carte menu. I had sea bass quite a few times which was lovely and they have a very good menu. It does pay to book your table the day before as we found the tables for two were taken us very quickly. I think I drank the whole bottle of pimm's whilst I was there as they soon ran out of it .We also went in a tuk tuk from outside the hotel I think his name was Lebve, well he took us all over the place into Galle and also to the Kingfisher restaurant at Unawatuna where we spent two days on the beach as the sea is much calmer there. The restaurant reserved us two sun loungers with umbrella and towels. very good food and good service and was cheaper then the hotel. The fortress actual booked the restaurant for us for the day to insure we got sun loungers as the beach is quite popular. Everything is taken care for you at the Fortress security at the main gate beautiful hotel with great service good food and lovely people. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable.

Spent 5 delightful nights at The Fortress. Arrived in Colombo at 2am stayed at The Kingsbury which is a 30min taxi ride from the airport. Kingsbury is affiliated with The Fortress and was their recommended hotel in Colombo. The Fortress organized transport from The Kingsbury - nice luxury SUV, they were on time and the driver very pleasant. Trip took about 90mins.

Arrived at The Fortress, greeted by the sound of a bell and walked through the tall gates into paradise. From the moment we stepped into the hotel the staff were adorable, so loving, so happy, so attentive. Staff 5 stars.

We stayed on the ground floor (room 12) garden access. We didn't have a plunge pool in our room but didn't need it. The communal pool was great. Service around the pool brilliant.

Beach is great for a walk - wish I took my surf board as the beach was empty and great waves. Stilt fisherman just around the corner. Some of the staff breed turtles and once they are strong enough they release them into the ocean. This is a great experience.

Have to say we were a little disappointed with the food and price of alcohol. Wine options, very limited and way overpriced.

Kid friendly but that didn't bother us at all. It's big enough to escape if need be.

We headed into town a few days/nights - grabbed a tuk tuk from outside, 3000r return trip, it's about 30mins to Galle, the driver will also wait for you. Galle fort is a tad boring but worth a look if you're into museums and history. We ate at deco 44 - great king prawns also really cheap. We had a great curry at Mamas rooftop cafe. Don't bother going to Kingfisher in Unawatuna, so overrated. I would recommend a cooking class - we went to Sonia's Kitchen. We also went to Mirissa Beach for a day trip.

Overall a wonderful experience.

We stayed at the Fortress for three nights on our recent trip to Sri Lanka and what a find. Everything about the hotel was superb. The staff could not have been more welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms are very spacious and have wonderful views and on our last night we ended up in a suite which wonderful. The food was excellent and the chef took the time to talk to the guests and find out what people thought and what they would like on the menu.
Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: We tried all three different room types and all were excellent, well equipped with wonderful bathroo...

This hotel is another gem. Peaceful, stunning, beautiful. Everything you want in a retreat. Next to the beach that is pristine and long. Space for everyone and beautiful grounds. We were there during Sri Lanka New Years. The hotel brought in an elephant for the children to ride as well as organised games and amazing dancing in the evening. The rooms are high tech and wonderful. Each has an amazing jacuzzi bath and IPOD loaded with great music. All rooms have stunning views. Service and food are excellent.

Room Tip: Get up at sunrise and go for a swim in the rock pool beach next to the hotel and watch the fishermen...

This hotel is luxurious and a great place to relax. The staff are friendly and professional and the food is really nice. We enjoyed playing pool on the table which any guests can use anytime. The housekeeping was really good and they change your towels twice a day. The pool is fantastic and massive. Never too busy and over looks the ocean. The only things I didn't like about the hotel were the location as you can't walk very easily to any shops etc. You are best taking a tuck tuck. These are just outside the hotel, check with the hotel desk on costs as there is a standard rate although it is really reasonable and the driver stays with you the whole time. Also I thought the food and drinks were really overpriced. So it was cheaper to pay a tuck tuck about £10 and go into Galle which is about 30mins on a tuck tuck. A lovely place but need to look at pricing on food and drink. Also they had DVD players in the room but quite an old and dated collection of DVDs which could easily be improved.

Sorry this review has taken a year...I have been meaning to do, better late than never. 10th April 2013 was our wedding day. We had visited this hotel on a recommendation a few years back for dinner and fell in love with the place. We decided to go back and stay for 3 nights in 2012...we stayed in a standard room but there is nothing standard about these rooms, the best rooms we have ever stayed in. This hotel was the only place we wanted for our wedding so we decided to book...the whole experience from start to finish was amazing. We delt with Nadeesha, Gayani and Asela who bent over backwards for us and could not do enough (even after our stay they have continued to help us which we cxant thank them enough for. Our wedding went smoothly and we had a blissful day...we can not wait to go back and visit in July! Highly recommend this hotel.
