“Wedding at The Fortress”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

We travelled to Sri Lanka, in May for our wedding. It was very hard to choose the hotel, but after seeing all the good reviews on tripadvisor, we decided for the fortress.
It took us nearly 3 hours drive from Colombo to the hotel. As soon as we arrive, we realized why the name Fortress. The doors were amazing.
We were received by Gayani, the person who organised our wedding.
The fresh towels and the cold drink were a must after our arrival. It was hot and humid.
We were taken to our room, which was on the first floor overlooking the Indian sea. How good it was to wake up to the sound of the ocean. The room was enormous. The bed so big and was decorated nearly every day, which was a very pleasant surprise. The rest of the room had all the amenities that you could wish for. There is even an Ipod dock in the room.
The food was outstanding, we went on a full board basis, we only had to pay for the drinks, which gave us peace of mind. The food is expensive, if you want to have a special meal. But it is worth the money.
Sunil, one of the waiters was absolutely amazing, always very friendly, helpful and always smiling. We miss him on his day off. All the staff were always very pleasant, and helpful.
Our wedding was very well organised, least the photographers, which were not so organised. I wish I had taken a photographer with me, because the groom has lots of photos alone before the ceremony, and the bride was utterly forgotten. I don't have not even one photo alone... which made the whole experience least satisfactory. But apart from that lack of organization with the photographers, everything was organised by Gayani, our flowers, the cake, the music, they even got someone to help us, to broadcast the ceremony via skype, so thank you for that.
The ceremony was on the beach, which was our idea, the weather was amazing that day. The beach has this great white sand. We were able to release some turtles into the sea, which I think is a very nice touch.
The whole experience was amazing. Everyone was trying to make us fell very welcome and unique.
Would definitely recommend this hotel to whoever wants to spend a perfect holiday.

We try to visit new destinations and Sri Lanka and The Fortress were on the to do list especially for this celebration.
Sadly the journey from the airport took 4 hours. Unusual length of time and we were trying to get the driver who had not done the journey before to speed up. Sadly no luck. The new motorway was very quiet and many vehicles were overtaking us. So 22 hours from our door to hotel. Thank goodeness we were staying for 10 days. Do long haul as young as possible is my recommendation.
As for the hotel we absolutely loved it. Room was perfect for us. Ground floor sea view (room4)
patio to grass to pool.
Staff very attentive and daily conversations added to our whole experience. Cocktails excellent.
As for the food - amazing. Some of the best meals we have experienced. No trouble or extra expense we we went of the menu. Fabulous service, quality ingredients and the curries to die for.

We just returned from a 5 day stay at the fortress. We have high expectations as we come from the Middle East where service and luxury are outstanding. We felt this resort has few faults but still is not excellent. We stayed in the pool room, great location of room as you walk straight to the pool, beach... We were meant to have a butler with our room but we didn't have a dedicated butler as was expected, this was confusing. Our room was meant to have Bvlgari amenities but these were not replenished unless asked. The resort is a beautiful location and the staff are very friendly, always smiling. The biggest disappointment was the spa. We have a lot of experience using luxury spas and felt this was marketed the same way. Unfortunately it was not so. I had a head massage which ended up in my hair being full of knots and had to go back to get them to help me! We also had the couples treatment which is about 250US dollars, we were ushered out quickly at the end of the treatment and simply handed a bottle of water each?!!! Overall we very thoroughly enjoyed our stay but it's not perfect.

We enjoyed our stay at The Fortress and would most probably choose it again if we were to turn back the clock but I did feel that it failed a bit in some key areas - especially for the price tag.

The pros first:
The room was spectacular. Probably the second best hotel room I have ever stayed in. It was huge. The bathroom alone was bigger than the space you would usually get for your entire room. The bed was enormous and the room was cleaned every time you left, with petals appearing on your bedspread. Robes, flip flops, a ipod and docking station with hundred of songs (albeit ours didnt work properly), added to the luxury of the room. If everything else had lived up to the room this would be the perfect hotel. But sadly it didnt quite.

The pool was also really lovely, and relatively child-free. For quite a large hotel it was surprising that the pool area never felt overly busy (although it may have been because of the crows - see below!). The rest of the hotel was also beautiful and the view to the sea was stunning.

The pool lifeguard was beginning to offer snorkelling trips to a few guests in the sea just in front of the hotel and I hope this has continued because he took my husband out and my husband said it was the best snorkelling experience he has had and it a real highlight of the whole trip.

The hotel entertainment was actually surprisingly good. I never normally enjoy this and actively avoid this sort of thing as I find it cringey. But the hotel put on a traditional Sri Lankan dance show and I was blown away by the dancer's skills - worth a watch!

The cons:
The food was really poor. For this type of 'luxury' hotel I was really disappointed by the lack of choice. In the evening the was a buffet or a waiter service option. The buffet was really uninspiring and not what I expected from this level of hotel, but it was still really pricey. And the waiter service definitely wasn't the quality I expect. From a luxury hotel of this standard I would have expected gourmet-level food from the menu but unfortunately most of it was greasy and unimaginative (the lunch menu was essentially just a selection on battered foods - at one point i was actually served a plate of battered prawns, battered mushrooms, batted meat balls and fried cheese and that was it ).

The hotel suffers from a major crow problem. They live in the trees above the pools but spend most of the day washing themselves in the pool of steeling food off peoples plates. Im not really sure what the hotel can do about it but it really is disgusting. Its really hard to relax with the constant cawing noise and worry they will steel your food or your things and its seems really unhygienic.

The hotel fronts straight onto the beach with the beach being set about 4 foot down from the level of the hotels pool side, where people sit close to the boundary edge to relax in front of the gorgeous view. Unfortunately locals trying to sell you things, or with monkeys or carrying huge snakes will frequently prop themselves up to the wall and call at you and once they know you have seen them (which is very hard not to as they are right in your sight line) will not leave you alone. It not only really frustrating when you are wanting to enjoy you holiday and relax, but also as a young woman it doesn't make you feel as safe as you should to be goggled at and bothered. They may not pose any real risk at all but it really stops you being able to relax as you might want to. Again to a certain extent the hotel cant stop this but on several occasions I noticed these beach front 'vendors' chatting to the hotel staff and the staff certainly didn't seem to be moving them on, if anything they seemed friendly with them. I don't mean to be mean, but that's not want guests want from a luxury hotel.

Another word of warning, there are a lot of people who will bother you for money on this beach. We took a stroll down the beach only to be bothered by a man who kept saying that for money he would show us where there was a nice safe pool for swimming in (as the sea is not safe for swimming). It turned out he wanted to show us to the Fortress' pool!!! I wonder how many non resident of the Fortress he has shown in there.....

So friends have told us about this hotel and we were lucky to spend a night here. Actually unlucky to spend only a night here. Colonial style splendor with the usual very friendly Sri Lankan staff. Good food and great views. Makes me want to come back so that's in our plans

After a week of trekking and doing Adam's peak, we needed this hotel.
A superb room, with jacuzzi and power shower, loads of space, great lighting in the room and the ocean view is wonderful.
The buffet is a cut above the other (very good) buffet's we had at other hotels and their sandwiches for lunchtime are large enough to share, brought out to you at the pool, and are super tasty (esp the club sandwich or the spicy tuna sandwich!)
And the pool, that overlooks the beautiful ocean - awesome!
They are very eager to please and are super attentive - I fully recommend this hotel to those of you looking to chill out in luxury.

Room Tip: Ocean view is the one to get. No insects and a great view!
