With 180 degree views of the ocean, a huge pool, superb rooms and outstanding food, this is a place not to miss. Though its location is a bit away from the Fort area, but hotels inside the Fort are small and since there is not that much breeze inside the fort area, it is not nice during the hot months (we visited in May). A little pricey no doubt, but not over priced for what it is.

Most reviewers have already covered the excellent rooms, great food and awesome location. But to me what made The Fortress extra special was the quality of the customer service. The welcome we received from the delightful Chamindi was the best "front of house" service I have ever received, and significantly better than many top-level hotels that I have visited. I truly felt that I was welcome and this excellence of customer service continued for the entirety of our stay. The team was friendly, efficient and polite. More importantly, they all sounded sincere and I did not get the usual impression of big hotels where the people greet you like it is a chore. This hotel really is different in every way and I highly recommend it to visitors. But Chamindi and the team are what make it so great.

Room Tip: I recommend an ocean view room. I did not request one when I made the reservation, but Chamindi arr...

From the moment we arrived we knew it would be a wonderful holiday. The hotel was luxurious. The staff were so helpful and hospitable. Every member of staff treated you as a special person and nothing was too much trouble. The infinity pool stretched along the edge of the shore, amazing to just relax and watch the waves rolling in. We were a family of 9 meeting half way between England and Australia. We used minibuses booked for us by the hotel reception and were able to travel into Gaulle and other nearby beaches. Plenty of restaurants within Tuk Tuk reach. Disappointing whale watching trip. Bit of a con as the season had finished and the whales had migrated.....they still take your money and sail out into the horizon to search....worth doing your research first!!
We would like to return to Sri Lanka to explore more locations. Difficult and tiring with 9 of us to be having long days out. It seemed that several hotel guests had done a two centre holiday and ended relaxing at the Fortress for the last few days. Nevertheless it was a wonderful experience. Thank you to the staff at the Fortress.

Spent 4 days at the fortress over Easter break to celebrate my sister's impending wedding. The pool was absolutely amazing. Food is lovely - ordered the chicken biyriani (very authentic) pool side - bliss. The staff were excellent - special mention goes to Asla at the restaurant. He organised lumprais and dosas which weren't available to us on the menu - he really went out of his way to please us. The spa is lovely - amazing Indian head massage and aromatherapy massage - 7 of us enjoyed treatments and we all had fantastic experiences. Very resonantly priced. Rooms are big and the beach views are amazing. Breakfast is the best - fish curries and traditional Lankan food. Ask for the lulu miris chillies. Will definitely go back and since recommending the place to family and friends they have all booked or completed their stay and also have amazing things to say about the fortress

We stayed here the week before our wedding for a couple of nights and it was glorious! Walking through those huge gates is a trip into pure luxury.

On arrival, we were told that we had been upgraded so that we could enjoy our last few days before the wedding which was elsewhere in Galle. The room we were shown to was a duplex which included an indoor pool, sea view, stunning bedroom and all of the mod-cons. Perfection!

The hotel is immaculately maintained, the staff were a pleasure and the setting is just perfect. I could not speak more highly of The Fortress. If you want to recharge, reconnect and soak up the sun, there is no better place.

As we had family and friends in Sri Lanka, we were unable to have lunch/dinner there due to other commitments but breakfast with the chipmunks was lovely. I hope to return in order to sample the food and spa!

Room Tip: If you can afford to splurge on a duplex suite- do it! The views of the Indian Ocean are worth very...

We travelled to Sri Lanka, in May for our wedding. It was very hard to choose the hotel, but after seeing all the good reviews on tripadvisor, we decided for the fortress.
It took us nearly 3 hours drive from Colombo to the hotel. As soon as we arrive, we realized why the name Fortress. The doors were amazing.
We were received by Gayani, the person who organised our wedding.
The fresh towels and the cold drink were a must after our arrival. It was hot and humid.
We were taken to our room, which was on the first floor overlooking the Indian sea. How good it was to wake up to the sound of the ocean. The room was enormous. The bed so big and was decorated nearly every day, which was a very pleasant surprise. The rest of the room had all the amenities that you could wish for. There is even an Ipod dock in the room.
The food was outstanding, we went on a full board basis, we only had to pay for the drinks, which gave us peace of mind. The food is expensive, if you want to have a special meal. But it is worth the money.
Sunil, one of the waiters was absolutely amazing, always very friendly, helpful and always smiling. We miss him on his day off. All the staff were always very pleasant, and helpful.
Our wedding was very well organised, least the photographers, which were not so organised. I wish I had taken a photographer with me, because the groom has lots of photos alone before the ceremony, and the bride was utterly forgotten. I don't have not even one photo alone... which made the whole experience least satisfactory. But apart from that lack of organization with the photographers, everything was organised by Gayani, our flowers, the cake, the music, they even got someone to help us, to broadcast the ceremony via skype, so thank you for that.
The ceremony was on the beach, which was our idea, the weather was amazing that day. The beach has this great white sand. We were able to release some turtles into the sea, which I think is a very nice touch.
The whole experience was amazing. Everyone was trying to make us fell very welcome and unique.
Would definitely recommend this hotel to whoever wants to spend a perfect holiday.

Room Tip: Have the ocean room if you want to have a balcony. Or a beach room if you want to go straight to the...

We try to visit new destinations and Sri Lanka and The Fortress were on the to do list especially for this celebration.
Sadly the journey from the airport took 4 hours. Unusual length of time and we were trying to get the driver who had not done the journey before to speed up. Sadly no luck. The new motorway was very quiet and many vehicles were overtaking us. So 22 hours from our door to hotel. Thank goodeness we were staying for 10 days. Do long haul as young as possible is my recommendation.
As for the hotel we absolutely loved it. Room was perfect for us. Ground floor sea view (room4)
patio to grass to pool.
Staff very attentive and daily conversations added to our whole experience. Cocktails excellent.
As for the food - amazing. Some of the best meals we have experienced. No trouble or extra expense we we went of the menu. Fabulous service, quality ingredients and the curries to die for.
