Not only at the lake views but also the new state of the art eco chalets which were offered in preference to the tired and cramped standard rooms which admittedly have fabulous views and a nice balcony. The chalet I stayed in 807 is a superb piece of architecture with single polished logs and cross beams holding up the roof and verandah. There is lots of marvellous timber finishes inside the split level stand alone structure and the bathroom is a massive size with bath and shower that opens to the sky, trees and monkeys overhead. Really artfully built and conceived right down to the etched paint on fabric on the walls. The downstairs sit out area is cool and does have some view of the lake. Bedding and fixtures are brand new. Fabulous!
This hotel is between the two heritage sites of Sigiriya and Polonnoruwa and 8,000rps gets you to both from the hotel. You can take local buses and get off at Giritale and is 1km off main road.
The breakfast is very good and staff are most helpful. The lobby area and entry with its lovely statue and the shiny terrazzo tiled floor mirrored in water opening out onto a vista of the lake is quite lovely. The terrazzo is polished with camphor and together with the incense creates a lovely atmosphere.
The grounds, pool, outdoor bar, change area and spa need a total renovation - at least keep it clean and dirt-free. Paths need sweeping and hosing down. The backyard looks like a rubbish tip - at least plant a row of trees to hide it. Otherwise, you do feel like you are in a national park with monkeys all round and I think I heard deer in the night. Wild elephants were drinking at the lake across from the hotel. It shows Sri Lanka at its natural best not spoilt by over-development like Bali nor by massive palm oil and rubber plantations like Malaysia.

The hotel is in a beautiful location. The views from the rooms are wow! Be prepared for some unexpected visitors in your rooms like small frogs and etc :) because of its close proximity to the lake. My husband went in for the massage and he thoroughly enjoyed it. The reception of the hotel is soooo pretty :) and service is good. The breakfast was wow too :)

This is our second visit to this place. Now rates have gone up and the hotel has been upgraded to a 3 star hotel (now owned and managed by the Nipuna Group). Still food quality is reasonably good and the staff is very friendly and courteous. Of course, the rooms and the swimming pool area has got a very fine view of the Giritale Tank. Entrance Hall is very attractive. However, in agreement with other reviewers, I also feel that the rooms, toilets and the corridor looks tired now and hence need some renovation / refurbishment (now that the rates are high and being a 3 star hotel. Otherwise this a very homely and nice place.

The rooms aren't great but the entrance hall is beautiful, and the views amazing. Our room was clean. The food at the dinner menu was not suficient for all the people dinning. No problems with water pressure.

Stayed one night as part of a tour. Main attraction is the stunning views from the rooms. hotel rooms were clean and comfortable. Bathroom is below average and the water pressure was a mere trickle - not a day for washing long hair!! Pool area was clean. Buffet breakfast offered a good selection.

We stayed one night here as part of a trip to the Ancient cities. As other reviewers have written, the hotel's main attraction is its location overlooking a beautiful tank. Beyond that, there's not much to recommend it. The rooms seriously need renovation, and a thorough cleaning. The water pressure is terrible, and the food is pretty lousy. Breakfast featured minimal tired-looking fruit and spoiled milk near the cereal. The set lunch we ate had tough chicken in a terrible tasting sauce, and even the Sri Lankan food at dinner didn't come anywhere near average. We had two rooms--neither had water, and the air conditioner was stuck on in the other. I would recommend looking elsewhere for accommodation.

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel.

This hotel has a lovely location on the banks of a large tank with beautiful sunset views out over the lake. The room we were in (main hotel building) had a balcony with a great view but the cleanliness was only so-so and the bathroom just about bearable. All the hotel staff were lovely and the buffet breakfast was great - good amount of choice (both Sri Lankan and Western) and plenty of it! The location is good for visiting all the main ancient city sites.

Overall an alright hotel but expensive option for only average service.
