“Friendly relaxing atmosphere”
Reviewed 26 October 2012

I stayed with 3 friends for 6 nights in October 2012 and we enjoyed our stay. We were walking during the days, and it was a pleasant place to return to and relax. We had mainly excellent walking weather but one day it started dry and developped into torrential rain and we got soaked. The staff were very helpful, lending us a heater to enable us to dry our clothes.

The evening meals were simple but well cooked. There was, however, only one menu with one alternative choice for each course which had to be ordered earlier in the day. The majority of days the alternative choice for the starter was a 'mixed salad' which was an unexciting mix presented exactly the same each day. One day there was a 'pasta salad' which was a welcome change. Perhaps a little more imagination and/or an extra choice would make a big difference.

We stayed here for a four night half board break, booked at a great price via the travel arm of Binter Canarias – truly great value.

LOCATION:
The hotel is certainly remote, set above the working village of Barlovento in the north east of this beautiful island. It’s a good 50 minutes to the capital, Santa Cruz. A clear benefit is the peace and quiet here, almost silence on occasions. There are very limited local restaurants all involving a drive, so we were glad we had the half board option. Do go for a swim at Fajana pools, 5km away. The village of Los Sauces is far more lively at 10km with a pleasant square. The hotel had low occupancy and seems popular with walkers.

ROOMS:
It’s true to say these are well past their best, poor condition furniture, dim un-inviting lighting, all in our view needing renewal, as did the bathroom itself. Rooms though are very large indeed and although basic are relatively comfortable and ‘lived-in’. Balconies are small and ground floor rooms share an open area outside their rooms. The price we paid compensated for this as such but please do not expect 4 star comforts. You will be disappointed. Reading at night is also very difficult with all the energy saving bulbs and the bathroom is extremely dim. We could hardly study ourselves in the mirror – lol!

FOOD:
The breakfast is overall acceptable, very much self-service, get your own cups, cutlery etc and find your own table. It’s very pleasant to eat in the conservatory – this is a lovely space.
Our evening meals were very good with a limited two option menu you selected at breakfast. Food was piping hot and served at a good pace. Portions were not huge but after three courses we tended to agree we had eaten enough. There was a pleasing home-cooked feel to what we ate. They could have been more generous with staples such as rice or potatoes which are low cost items.

VALUE:
Bar prices were a little steep, possibly due to a monopoly. Our package at €105 a day including half board and the return flights from Tenerife North was extremely good value for two persons.

FACILITIES:
The indoor pool was an added bonus with nearby Jacuzzi (very heavily chlorinated). The area for spa treatments exuded non-use and neglect. The outdoor pool is not heated.

We really did enjoy our holiday on La Palma. It is truly scenic, non-touristy and offers true relaxation. I may a been a little harsh in my comments above only to give a true flavor of our experience. We are unlikely to stay again as we would wish to try somewhere else, but we definitely feel a few days here will offer most an enjoyable experience. The owners need to consider room upgrades as this may make the difference in planning a return trip.

Room Tip: Seek first floor - request open views. Superior rooms are enormous.

Upon leaving our Thomson flight the masses went one way onto coaches whilst we were met by a local taxi company and transferred to the hotel La Palma Romantica in Barlevento. It was clear from the journey north and upon arrival, the location was somewhat remote and following a walk down the mountain on Saturday morning to Barlevento it was also apparent the climb back to the hotel was somewhat challenging. The hotel is in an idyllic location with good facilities and we were fortunate to be allocated an upgraded room with stunning views down the mountain and to the ocean beyond, on clear days we were able to see the island of Tenerife. The staff were attentive and on one occassion even changed the menu to accommodate our requirement. With a car rented we were able to get out and discover this beautiful island although driving around the mountains was a little frightening. The weather was not too hot but perfect for the vacation and upon our return we have already discussed with our travel company a return visit in May next year. If you visit this island and go north as we did make sure you hire a car, it is a remote location and if you want to explore a car is the best way to do it.

La Palma is enchanting and wild...The northern part of the isle is still calmer. It is very green, so expect some rain or clouds from time to time. La palma romantica is the perfect setting for exploring this quit region. It is a 3-star property. It should get some minor updates, but people are friendly, food is good and the views to Barlovento and the nord coast are unforgettable.

Room Tip: High floor if possible: the suites are cheaper than standars room elsewhere

Just returned from a relaxing week in La Palma. We have been to the Island twice before and stayed in a Finca but this time opted for Hotel La Palma Romantica. The Hotel was small and comfortable which is what we wanted. We had a Junior Suite, a top floor large room with balcony. We had loads of space, sofa's and chairs, a TV although found it hard to locate anything other than World News to watch and a very good size bathroom. The room was warm with under floor heating and blackout curtains. The water pressure on the Island is variable so if you like a powerful shower be warned you won’t get one.
We decided to select half board and chose to eat in every night. The food was very good, all home cooked. The hotel served breakfast and dinner over a good period of time so catered for the early or late riser and those who preferred to eat earlier in the evening than others. It was my husband’s birthday and our wedding anniversary while we were away, the hotel staff were alerted to this and provided us with a table set with flowers, wine, cava and a special celebration cake. The waiters were excellent very helpful and friendly, a wonderful bunch.
The gym was a bit tired, I would have quiet liked a treadmill or cross trainer (that's me being picky) but the indoor pool and Jacuzzi looked ok although we didn’t use them.
I would pick this Hotel over and above any of those in the tourist areas of the Island anytime, quiet, peaceful and friendly.
The weather in the north can be varied and unpredictable but with a car you can chase the sun. But if you dont want to drive around there is loads of great walks nearby to keep you fit.

We chose to stay in the North of the island to get away from the main tourist area and high-rise hotels. This hotel had a nice, family-run, small feel to it - with reasonable facilities for a hotel of it's size. It's getting a little dated/worn in places, but was clean. Our room was a nice size and very comfortable. We had a balcony with a view of the garden - but the sea and hill views were rather obscured by the trees just outside the balcony. Ask for the top floor if you don't want people clumping around above you - as the floors were tiled with rugs, so not great at noise-cancelling, plus the sound-proofing to next-door rooms wasn't great. We stayed in November, and it was too cold to use the pool outside, but we used the indoor one a lot - and the jazuzzi was great for soothing the legs after a long steep walk. There's not much to do in the local vicinity, except walk. The local village/town has a very small supermarket but i didn't like the look of any of the cafe bars, so we ate in every night. The food was really nice, evening meals were freshly prepared and always piping hot, but i would have liked to have seen more local dishes. I'm vegetarian, and was well catered for - with the hotel making dishes that were not on the menu to give me some variety. I liked the half-board option - as you didn't have to have it all week, but could decide each day (by noon or 2pm I think) if you wanted to go half-board (set menu), eat out, or choose from their regular menu. The breakfast was buffet-style, with a range of cereals, toast you made yourself, a variety of eggs, plus meats/cheeses, juices, fresh-fruit, lovely bread rolls. The owners were very friendly - the husband was from the UK and the wife was Spanish. He gave us lots of ideas about places to go etc. The ony other improvement i'd make would be not to charge for the sauna.

Room Tip: top floor (see main review)
