My husband and I stayed here for two weeks at the end of August/start September. Yes the accomodation is cheap but we did expect a little more having stayed on various other Greek Islands on a budget. The hill that the apartments are situated on is very steep, I know others say it isn't that bad but it is steep and I would not recommend for the elderly unless they are pretty fit. I suppose the plus point of hill is that the rooms have a lovely sea view. The area is very quiet and there is not much to do or anywhere decent to eat. The beach however is a short 5 min walk with sunloungers that you can hire for the day cheaply. If you want to eat decent food you need to take a bus which runs every half hour to Adelianos Kampos which is just over 5 mins away. I would not recommend trying to walk there as the road is quite dangerous with no lighting, it's also further than you think.

The apartments appear to be run/manned by two young guys who are very friendly and do try to be as helpful as they can. The downside to this was that almost everynight we were kept awake by them laughing and playing loud (repetitive) music with their friends, this usually went on until about 4am. It's not great when you are being kept up most of the night by the antics of the staff.

The pool is small but did appear to adequate in relation the number guests there at the time and there was a good number of sunloungers. I think that most guests did the same us and tended to go out most of the day. The major issue with the pool and apartments was that there were no snacks available to buy at all, not even a bag of crisps. This put us off sitting by the pool because we had to get up and travel to the next resort anyway for some breakfast and lunch so there was little point in sitting by the pool. In Adelianos Kampos there are plenty beach bars where you can hire a lounger for the day and even some of the hotels there let you use their pools for free which are far superior to the Sunrise pool.

The apartments were clean on arrival, however the maid service was quite poor. The maid cleaned the room only once every 4 days so you had to make do with the same towels and your toilet bin not being emptied. She would also helpfully leave your balcony doors open so that after being out all day and returning after dark, your room would be full of mosquitos.

My husband and I hired a car to get around more easily (no more hill!) and made trips to Rethymno and Chania, both are worth a visit. You could take the bus to Rethymno in the evenings as well if you fancy good food and there is plenty of choice there. It takes about 25 mins on the bus. Another place worth a visit is Panorma which is a little fishing village with a lovely harbour. There is a small stretch of beach as well which was lovely. Panorma is about 10 mins away from Sfakaki and again reachable by bus.

On the whole my husband and I are in agreement that we would definitely return to Crete however we would never stay at the Sunrise Apartments again and would not recommend them to friends or family regardless of the price.

My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful two weeks at the Sun Rise apartments. The rooms were basic but kept clean and tidy, towels and bedding changed regularly. The apartments are run by extremely friendly staff, who were very helpful and laidback. The pool and bar area were very relaxing and clean, couldn't have asked for more. The area itself is quiet with no hustle and bustle so if your looking for a complete relaxtion holiday this is the place to go. A few reviews mention the hill which is slightly steep but we didn't find this an issue and we are not young by any means. The taverna at the bottom of the hill, possibly spelt Pantelli, if well worth a visit with very friendly owners. Overall we had a fantastic, relaxing holiday at the Sun Rise and my wife and I would definitely return.

Just returned from this apartment and would fully endorse everything written by reviewer on 19/6/11 nothing has changed at all. We did however have a great time spending money on trips and in the local tavernas that we had saved by using these apartments and not paying hundreds more on a posh hotel. We are both retired and would warn any pensioners about the hill.

We got there late at night, a warm breeze licked our faces and the crickets soothing cheep was interrupted only by the occasional clang of the bells around the goats necks.. yes you heard me goats! they use them to cut the grass.. genius!..

The late transfer and cattle like herding of the holiday makers by the faux enthused tour reps of Thomson holidays can not be passed on to the island or the accommodation. These in my mind when travelling are always separate.

If you expect 4 star luxury that you may have glimpsed tantalizingly on the transfer coach on the way in, then no. But that's not to say the apartments were not adequate, clean and fit for purpose. They were, and even the wonderful maid did your dishes in the sink if you happened to have left them there! The rooms were cleaned regularly and towels replaced, and if you needed washing up liquid you just have to ask, well in my case sign in pigeon Greek, and at one point I could have ended up with anything!

The rooms were light and airy and typically Greek ( tiled floors simple bathrooms). All topped off with a wonderful balcony with a wonderful view of the sea.

We got there in late September which can be a bit mixed as far as weather, but come on we are south enough to mean that its hot for most of the time not all of the time.

Ok.. now there is a bit of a hill and I stress bit of a hill not mountain or cliff, so for the people who actually bothered to waste a part of their holiday taking pictures of the road up to the Sunrise then a good book might have helped which could be found in the lounge room opposite the pool, it had a big wide screen TV playing all the Greek channels which consisted of over made up Greek goddess' chatting about well nothing really for hours then dancing around the studio..

The manager Costas was a brilliant friendly bloke who didnt speak much english, but he and I had fun trying to guess what we were saying as Ilearnt a little Greek from him and we sat drinking Raki ( rocket fuel!) with his family by the pool.

Theres a beach about 5 mins walk down the road, go right past the dog, (really you'll know) down that road by the main roud and sneak through the tunnel and you cant miss it.

The sea was warm and refreshing and you can find a quiet spot if you walk either way down the beach. There were plenty of beach bar snack thingamabobs so you wont starve!

Shopping.. well you could go to the tiny market to the left past the restaurants with the most miserable Greek man (who looked like Columbo but without the eye) on the planet, or you could go right at the bottom of the (not that bad!) hill, walk for 5 mins and there were 2 markets and a sublime bread/ cake shop. Theres always plenty of home grown veg and fruit ..MELONS!!.. sorry they were delicious! and the bread is to die for, dont be put of by the tomatoes, cut into them and they were blood red, and were perfect...!!

Finally.. The pool... Well we went elsewhere so we didnt use it that much, but it was wonderful and refreshing, and always clean!! with good chairs.. that you could nod off on..

This was a relaxing budget holiday with more than enough to do if you looked for it, I would happily go back there as the people were warm and friendly and helpful. If you expected 4 star and you didnt pay for 4 star then to be honest what did you expect, so dont bleat like my friends the goat mowers! and lets face it the 4 star hotels glimpsed were sterile not Greek and very cattle like in there delivery, not a way to see the real world!

What we got was Warm, friendly, relaxing, peaceful,Cheap!... what else do you need!

Booked this holiday after reading some mixed reviews so was a bit apprehensive after some of the comments.Got to the airport in the early hours about midnight and was told by the rep he would not be trevelling with us but the coach driver would drop us off at the bottom of the hill and was given some verbal directions by him to get to the apartments. When we were dropped off we were lucky enough to be met by the owner in his pick up truck, because we wouldn't have fancied our chances of finding the way there at that time of night.Anyway the studio we stayed in was excellent, spacious and clean with a nice view over the pool and looking out to the sea.The cooking facilities are really basic but the most we did was toast didn't plan on cooking much anyway, the hot water comes from solar panels so best time to shower is when the sun's been out for a while but it was really hot when it was there. There was also a main dual carriageway you could see from the balcony as well but there was an underpass so no need to cross it.It was only ten mins to a nice little sandy beach and 3 or 4 tavernas (only ate in 2 of them both very good but the called Andrianas was the most reasonable.Yes there is a hill you have to climb back to the apartments it's at it's steepest for about 50 metres but you don,t have to run up it, me and the wife managed and we're the wrong side of 45 but you need a sit down at the end of the climb. The area is very quiet so if it's nightlife you're after don't bother because there aint none. The local buses will get you into Rethmynon in about 30 mins for 6 euros return for 2 they are pretty regular and run till about 11 at night.Me and the wife have said we'd go back and would have no qualms about staying at the Sun Rise again all in all excellent place to go for a bit of peace and quiet

Rooms are big and clean. Staff are very friendly. Rep helped us out whenever he could and very friendly. Area a bit sparse, but easy to get to everywhere. Hill is very steep and a bit tough, even for a 23 year old... but it is doable and you do get used to it. There is currently a taxi strike on at the moment but told it shouldn't last more than a few days. Beach is beautiful, a lot of waves and it is a sand beach with occasional rocks. Easy to walk on in bare feet. We managed to connect to wi-fi but I think we we're lucky as we directly above the reception area (where I assume the router is).
All in all, very lovely hotel, nice quiet area and would deffinetly recommend and would like to come again!

Room Tip: We were told we had a studio, but it is very large with seating area, kitchen, dining table, large b...

We stayed at the sunrise from 25th august to 8th september 2011. We arrived at around 11pm and was greeted
By seb the barman he spoke very good English and is a nice genuine bloke. The owners speak no English at all but still lovely. Seb showed us to our room wich to my surprise after reading all the bad reviews was lively and clean basic but clean. The room had 2 single beds a tv (mostly Greek channels) nice big wardrobes and a balcony with a stunning view of the sea. Shower is small but does the job. The cleaner came to our room everyday to empty the bins etc and did a proper clean every 3rd change sheets etc. One thing I would say is that there is quite a lot of mozzys around outside in the night so try to keep your fours shut wen possible. Luckily we took with us a mozzy net but a couple upstairs we met had got bitten a few times. the pool was cleaned every night by seb. There is a hill which you need to walk up and down to get to places but nothing we couldn't handle. There is some lovely tavernas around which does lovely food. And if you fancy the night life tfen it's only a 5 min bus ride away were you can watch the live football on sky etc. The last bus leaves at 11:30pm but can always get a taxi back for £5 if you wanna stay longer. Only go to sunrise if you are after a relaxing holiday. Perfect for couples but if your single and want the night life go to malia. One negative point about the hotel is that they don't do any food whatsoever no pool snacks etc but you can bye a nice cold drink wen you get fed up of the hot sun. All in all a nice holiday for £798 for 2 weeks. but dont think I will go back here only reason being it was to quiet for me and my partner. Hotel is not as bad as people make out.
