We were a family of 9 travelling together, 6 adults and three kids of almost 2, 2½ and 7½ years old. We rented the house via TripAdvisor and Etouri, and I must admit that I was a bit sceptic if everything would be OK. Kostas, the manager at Etouri, responded to every request about the rental almost within an hour.
Finally the day of our arrival came! As agreed we called the owner - George - about an hour before our arrival. We were welcomed and had a tour of the house and annex.
Wow, wow and wow ... Everything was exactly as the photos we had seen on the internet. I.e. a trampoline had been added to the children's corner and an outdoor spa besides the terrace, so we could watch the sunset while in the spa!
We arrived at lunch time and we were treated with a very nice meal (from George's restaurant in Rethymno) as well as water, beer and wine. Tasted so good - thank you very much for that George.
There were fine white towels and linen, some had "Villa Kokkinos" weaved into the towel or linen. There were also a lot of pool towels. No need to bring that. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed. E.g. we pressed oranges every morning. On our first morning there and one more, George brought us bread and cookies. Also thanks a lot for that.
We all enjoyed the spa with a beautiful view of the sea. Imagine being able to shower each morning and night with seaview, I loved it! Actually, you also had seaview from the shower in the bathroom in the annex.
We were cooking almost all the meals. We had barbeque and we made pizzas in the pizza oven. We bought some coal for the barbeque, but George also brought some and when we asked where we could get wood for the pizza oven, George came with some. We flavoured our food with spices from the garden. There were plenty of rosemary, basil and mint.
All rooms are airconditioned and they can be cooled down very quickly.
We used the annex kitchen and annex terrace for all meals, and the house with three bedrooms were almost only used for sleeping.
The place is lovely: You have seaview from almost everywhere, from each room, from all the small terraces, from the pool and as mentioned from the spa and bathroom in the annex. The children's corner can be watched from the annex terrace. The garden is fenced and there is a little fence between the annex outdoor area to the swimmingpool.
When I look back at my photos, I have photos of the sunset from every day. I loved just to sit and watch the sunset from the terrace, and some times the sun "rolled down the mountain". So beautiful.
The house was cleaned and linen and towels changed three times during the week we were there. The swimmingpool was cleaned every morning.
The house is situated in an area more than a town. There is a small supermarket by the "new road", but as it only takes about 10 minutes to drive to Rethymno, we went to a bigger supermarket to shop. It took about 10 minutes to walk to the local beach, which was fine. There is a little taverna there.
We think that the service provided by George is nothing less than extraordinary! We have not experienced that before when renting other houses.
And Etouri: On the first night we received an email with a gift, which was a day at Baja Beach Club (about 10 minutes from the house) including a gazebo and 6 very nice sunbeds with towels. We were given cold water all the time and we had white wine and fruit. We went to the Etouri office in Rethymno Old Town and said hi to Kostas and his team. Then we were given another gift: Same package as Baja but at Bali Beach Club (about 30 min. drive from the house). We called Kostas one night about food from a restaurant, and he immediately called the restaurant and sent info on the restaurant by sms to us.
We enjoyed the house, the annex terrace, the garden (which is very nice with flowers), the pool and the pool area very much and we think that the service provided by both George and Kostas at Etouri was beyond our high expectations.
We have already recommended the house to our friends, who are celebrating their 25 anniversary next summer with their children and grandchildren.
One thing to note: There is a cat coming to the terrace and sometimes a couple more, so if you are allergic to cats it could be a problem. On the other hand you will find cats all over Crete and almost at every outdoor restaurant.
Superb villa with everything you need and within walking distance to the beach and a few shops and restaurants. The owner left some lovely food for us which was most appreciated after arriving in the evening and dropped some rest bread and pastries through the rest of the week. Cleaned every 3 days! Hired in some chefs to cook for us one night as a treat as it was my mums 60th and it was delightful! Would recommend to all.
I was wary when I booked this villa as it looked too good to be true, but I was wrong as it was every bit as amazing as it looked on the website! The villa was beautiful and was immaculately clean (they come in and clean it every few days). Everything was provided for us (towels etc.) and when we arrived, there was a hot meal waiting for us which was brilliant as we were so tired that we didn't really have the energy to go out. Throughout the week, we were given freshly baked biscuits and bread which was such a lovely touch. The studio is right next to the main house and is far more than a typical studio. It has a separate bathroom, bedroom and kitchen/lounge and was lovely to my parents to stay in and give them a bit of space from us and the grandchildren.
The only negatives I can think of was that the pool was too cold to swim in (but I don't think I've ever had a heated pool in a villa in Europe so not a deal breaker at all), and also the mattresses weren't very comfortable. I suffer from a bad hip anyway and need an orthopaedic mattress so it's not something that would effect everyone. I had to drag the big pillows from the sofa to the bed every night to try and make it more comfortable but I didn't sleep well all week. My husband also struggled as he has a bad back but my sister, parents and nephews didn't have any problems.
All in all though, I would absolutely recommend this villa. It truly is beautiful and the owners go out of their way to look after you. There are multiple balcony's and the views are stunning. It was perfect for my young nephews as there was a basketball area, along with a small area of toys. There is a gate between that area and the pool too so we didn't need to worry about the kids going near the pool unsupervised. There was also ample space for them to run around safely where we could see them from the outside area of the studio (where we ate all of our meals etc.)
The beach is only a 9 minute walk away (we timed it!) and it's a 10 minute drive into Rethymno which is a lovely area.
I would definitely recommend a car, we would have been a bit stuck without it. There is an Lidl a 10 min drive away which we used a lot.
Thank you to Mr George and his family for an amazing holiday!
We were a party of 4 adults and 2 children (ages 4 yrs old and 7 months).
Villa Kokkinos was in a lovely area, close to amenities such as supermarket and restaurants. We did hire a car which is advisable and we travelled into nearby Rethymnon many times.
The villa was really well equipped and immaculate. We used the studio kitchen the most and sat out on the veranda for all of our breakfasts and also had afew BBQs, the children enjoyed the play area opposite and this was great as we could sit at the table and still be watching them.
The villa was cleaned every few days really thoroughly and the pool and outside area was cleaned daily.
The sunloungers were very comfortable and you could tell the owner took a lot of pride in what he bought for the villa.
We really enjoyed our day at Baja beach club, it's only down the road and such a lovely place with a fabulous children's pool.
The owner was very generous and brought us food from his restaurant for our arrival which was delicious and also bread and Greek sweet treats/breads from a local bakery afew times whilst we were there which was such a lovely surprise! We enjoyed everything, Thankyou!
We will definitely be returning, the Greek are so friendly, especially welcoming to children.
Thankyou for a brilliant holiday!
We have spent a fabulous week at Villa Kokkinos. It is located in a small village but is very close to Platanes and Rethymno. We had trips to Preveli beach, Imbros Gorge, horse-riding and Rethymno - all of which were easy drives from the villa.
The accommodation is kitted out with everything you will need and more. There was an extremely generous welcome food pack with BBQ'd meats, salads and vegetables provided on arrival. The fridges were stocked with essentials - and some non-essentials.... including beer! Deliveries of breads and pastries for breakfast arrived every couple of days. The pool is lovely and kept spotlessly clean by the owner. There are also lots of games and toys to keep kids (and big kids) entertained including a little football area, basketball and table tennis. There is a beach area and local tavernas about 5 minutes walk from the villa.
The service from Kostas and the team at Etouri both before we arrived and during our stay was fantastic.
We, my wife and I, booked this villa to celebrate our 25th wedding day. We invited our children and their partners and also my wife's mother (totally 8 adults).
Upon arrival (late saturday evening) we were welcomed by the owner's daughter, and had a tour of the 2 houses. Also there was a “welcoming package” with foods, drinks, water, fruit, salad, bread etc, i.e. all you need to get a perfect start of your holiday.
The location is perfect in quite surroundings overlooking the sea. The villa(s) contains everything you need in case you would like to prepare your own food. If not, you have a couple of tavernas within walking distance, and the city of Rethymno 10 minutes away by car.
Beaches and supermarket is within walking distance.
Service is within minutes, in case you need any support (the owner lives across the street. The pool was cleaned every day and cleaning of the villas was performed every 3rd day. Extra “silverlining” was the breakfast bread delivered on the door handle by the owner a couple of times during our stay.
Also the service from the agency, Etouri, is always within the distance of a telephone call, in case you need help with anything (thank you Kostas & Sophia).
I/we can strongly recommend the Villa Kokkinos for families and parties of friends that wants a nice holiday in Crete.
