“Beruwela, Sri Lanka”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2009

Just come back from Beruwela, Sri Lanka on honeymoon (12th Aug > 25th Aug '09), stayed in Palm Garden Hotel, which is good 3* all inclusive. Evening entertainment is a bit like Butlins, but everything else is very good, including food, rooms, pool, right on the beach, which is great for surfers, body boarding, but be wary of the currents, as they'll take you into trouble if your not careful.

There's a great rustic locals bar, less than 5 mins walk south on beach for a chilled out beer and watch the sunset - fantastically chilled.

Highly recommend you use Rambo Tours (Beach Boy, called Ranga * and his associates Lucky, Nadeen & Suzuki) for excursions, which are excellent, informative and 50% cheaper than travel agents excursions and you see more.

* - Very hospitable, he even hosted 16 foreigners (germans polish and brits) for dinner at his house for free.

I encourage you to go to Kandy, Elephant Orphanage, Yalle Safari, Galle, Hicaduwa and there a Turtle Hatchery down the road, where my wife and I released baby turtles into the sea in the early evening, lovely experience all round.

Go to Pala Tailors (5 minute Tuk Tuk ride (south) for 300>400 rupees return from Hotel) if you want a suit, etc made to measure, but you need to barter. We got 6 trousers and a suit tailored for £135 in 3 days, to a very good standard for work.

Happy to answer any further queries.

Best wishes,
Leigh & Gill Tidyman

A really good value hotel basic rooms with all you need, cleaned regulary, fantastic staff very friendly and helpful, a good selection of food from chinese, sri lankan, Italian something for every one all fresh and tasty with a good selection of fresh veg and fruit. The animation staff keep every one busy day and night if you want to join in but are not pushy if you are hapy to chill out by the pool, lots of activities for kids and adults alike. A great location on the beach and close to the nearest town with all the amenities like the market, bank, shops etc. would definately go back and to this same hotel if the price was right as it was good value it is not the most glamorous or modern of hotels but a 3 * and good value.

We have just come back (yesterday) from a 2 week stay at the Club Palm Garden. This hotel is BASIC large, clean rooms (No TV, Fridge or Safe) , Pool, walk straight out onto the beach etc. everything you would expect from a 3* hotel, if you are expecting more, pay more and go somewhere else!
The food was good buffet food (read another review about food being cold, go early enough and there is hot food, go 10mins before the end, its gonna be cooler!) The variety was good with themed night (mongolian BBQ was my favorite!)
Animation team did their best, excellant during the day lots of activites that many people joined in on. Evening entertainment was poor, no girls in the team really didn't help, they did their very best though.
The best bit about our trip was the "beech boys" especially Ranga (RAMBO TOURS) who was so professional and great value for money. We went to Kandy on an overnight trip, which was amazing, then relased baby turtles into the see, went to the fish market, quick trip up to the Big Buddah and had a boat tour all organised by Ranga though often accompianied by Lucky or Nadine (both excellant). Ranga even invited us to his home for some after dinner Arak! a generous caring man. I would highly recommened him to anyone going (look out for his red stripy t-shirt).

Last year we spent two holidays of two weeks here and we are returning this November for three weeks. The hotel is not plush but what do you expect in a poor country, this is overly compensated by the staff and food. You do not need television, etc., on a holiday. The rooms are cleaned daily, and yes they do not have hairdriers, etc., but does that really matter. The food is varied and if you do not like anything on offer they will make you an omelette. If you want all the mod cons stay at home. The beach is beautiful and the trips to the elephant orphanage and the two day tours to Kandy and area are exceptional. We went white water rafting in November and it was fantastic. Try the hotel for yourselves and then see what you think. We would not be returning if it was so terrible, would we? Roll on November.

Beruwela, Sri Lanka, AsiaTitle: ' FANTASTIC 'ID#: 34764726 My partner and i have had experience of five star hotels, and if thats what you are wanting this is not for you.... Hotel... It was OK ...it was cleaned every day, our room was a good size and we were happy with it, Again NOT a five star so dont expect it, ( you will be dissapointed !! ) That said, We couldnt have had a better experience of staff wanting to please us .... Customer relations manager very accomodating chap and we would like to thank the pool attendant burndip, cracking lad. Food... Well we both like our food and we dont go to countries and expect ' English ' food.... what we got was varied and very nice, also it was all covered ( we have been in higher hotels and the food is open to any insects that also want a bite to eat ) Entertainment... the Animation team worked hard at what they did, not the best entertainment, but you cart knock them for trying ( hell us brits are hard to please !! ) Beech boys.... these guys will sell you any trip at a fraction of the cost, at a cost of insurance...... if you want to pay the price then go with the rep.... if not always barter with them, our beech boy was called nadine... good all round bloke. People... most want to sell you something or other.. a firm NO usually works, it did with us. Overall ... We would go back but we would fly direct rather then transfers, reason ... ( 3 hours) in Newcastle airport - Newcastle to Dubia ( 7 hours ) then 3 hours in Dubia airport - Dubia to Columbo ( 5 hours ) and then a ( 3 hour ) transfer to our hotel ...

We have just returned from the Club gardens we only stayed there as the neptune was closed I had apprehensions before we left I should have followed my gut instinct it was like butlins in Sri Lanka.
The rooms were very poor, badly need updating and many repairs, the wardrobe was mouldy even though they tried to clean it several times , the shower tray was broken not repaired though reported, Mattresses were filthy we were promised a double bed but never received it .if you go make sure you use the safe for everything as things go missing.
Food a bad choice served cold at times due to lack of customers I believe, when we had 250 Sri lankans arrive for a weekend the food improved but returned to normal when they left.
Entertainment where do I start same activities every day for two weeks with no change, In the evening, entertainment was mediocre to bad ( Take ear plugs if you value your hearing)
The Staff tried there best but with no suport from management, The staff were always cheerful and always had a smile its a shame because Sri lanka is a lovely country and this Hotel did the country or the people any favours.

We arrived after a long flight to heavy rain, then shown our rooms , which had a lovely view, but the smell was over powering !!
The staff are willing to help, but with all the will in the world the smell was still there. We woke up and started to un pack, then the wardrobe door fell off. Then we had a shower which was still dirty from the last occupance. We looked at the towels which were no longer white but a grubby brown colour.
Anothert of our party had to sit outside their room until the patio door was fixed as it didn't lock.
The people and the food were ok but the rooms were really bad.
We asked our rep if we could move and went next door to the Riverina and paid the upgrade which was reasonable.
What a difference , they have put money into the hotel after the tusammi which the Palm Garden didnt do.
My advice would be do not go at the moment.
