“Lovely Hosts”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 January 2012

The Belfry is a lovely place to stay with lovely big rooms, brilliant cook, nice swimming pool and proprietor Chris is a gentleman who goes out of the way to help you enjoy your stay. The only reason I did;nt give 5 stars is because the mosquitos are deadly and also the location. You need transport to do anythig and at the nearby beach you get constantly pestered with locals, same in town. You have to get tuk tuk to Bendalim beach about 5 miles away to get a bit of peace but sometimes hassled their as well.Elephant orphanage is 4 hour taxi away and costs about £80 for 2 including entry, jungle cruise was nice and you get on at pier88 restraunt about 5mile away and costs £12 each.We enjoyed our short stay but 5 days was enough because their is really not much to do in evenings except get eaten with mosquitos. Finally taxi from airport is £40 each way but leave early as the road is an absolute nightmare.

Room Tip: We had room 3 which was honeymoon suite with lovely large balcony overlooking pool

What a discovery.........
Over the years we have stayed in numerous beachside hotels in Sri Lanka but none
can compare with this small hotel for service and cleanliness. Tucked away some
50 meters from the beach this guest house resembles a colonial villa, surrounded by
coconut palms and a myriad of other exotic trees and shrubs which attract many
varieties of tropical birds. Our spacious air conditioned room was beautifully furnished
in Singalese mahogany, the wide four poster bed was so comfortable.
The modern bathroom was well appointed with a super shower with HOT and cold
water which is often not the case in more expensive establishments.
Neena, the ever smiling housekeeper kept our room immaculately, changing the
high quality bed linen and fluffy towels daily.
The large balcony overlooked the swimming pool and also, beyond, a typical
Sri Lankan house and family carrying on their day to day activities. From here we were
able to watch the Toddy tappers scaling the 100 ft. coconut palms that surround the hotel.
For us, the fact that we were set back in a typical local environment made our holiday so
much more interesting than in a large 100 room beach hotel.
Chris and Rachel, the English owners, and the staff were so friendly and attentive to our
every need. We ate well here, all our meals were cooked to order (not in pre-cooked hods)
We were waited on hand, foot and finger by Duminda, maitre d’hotel, Silva, the chef
and the boys.
The hotel Tuk-Tuk was always available for our sorties into Beruwala town or down to
Aluthgama where we regularly visited Pier 88 on the Bentota river for a snack or drinks.
Chris can arrange any excursion, the cultural sights, Pinawella elephant orphanage, etc. etc.or indeed, a few rounds of golf.
After three weeks we felt like part of this delightful family and their staff.
Also, I did appreciate access to the computer which was always available.
Health permitting we shall return next year....can’t wait.

I can agree with all that other reviewers have said about the Belfry and the staff and owners are truly helpful. The one problem is that the property is adjacent to the railway line between Colombo and Galle and the trains all sound their klaxons as they approach. No need for an early morning call!

Rachel and Chris have hospitality down to a fine art. My stay was everything and yet so much more than I expected. From Day 1 of my stay I was made to feel more like a member of the family than a paying guest. Chris and Rachel sorted everything for me..........a reliable tuk tuk driver, bottle of booze, currency from the bank, mosquitos coils, trips out and about, a local jeweller and advice on just about everything else.
The room came with tea and coffee making facilities, a mosquito net, big (and I mean big) fluffy towels which were changed every day, and a safe deposit box behind reception.

We stayed 10 nights in mid July 2010, out of season but still nice.
The guesthouse is owned by an amazing English family who are very welcoming and went above and beyond. They helped arrange trips to waterfall, elephants, white water rafting etc... for a very good rate.
It was our honeymoon so they laid out a romantic meal on our balcony overlooking the pool.

Great place to stay in southwest Sri Lanka, would differently stay here again :)

Beruwala is a pretty central location between Colombo / International airport and the Southern beaches of Galle and Unawatuna and therefore makes for an ideal place to set up camp while exploring all the beaches on Sri Lanka's west coast... and while in Beruwala, the Belfry GH provides excellent value for money.

Room was very neat and clean and had an attached balcony with a view of the swimming pool and the beach at a distance. Food is served at the inhouse kitchen and is exceptional - very generous portions and authentic tasting cuisine.

Owners are very welcoming and the are equally friendly making this a very pleasant place to stay either short or long term.

Rooms have free wi-fi access as well as satellite cable TV.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 December 2009

We stayed at the Belfry for 2 weeks and enjoyed every moment. The family-run guest house is an extremely friendly place and the whole family (dog included) make you feel completely at home. The staff are helpful, friendly and attentive. The food is superb; the Sri Lankan cuisine is exceptionally good! There are many trips and tours available and Chris, the owner, is always happy to help organise a visit to the local turtle hatchery or a boat ride along the beautiful coast lines. The Belfry is ideal for honeymoon couples or families; the owner's children are very friendly and fun to be around!
