“1st rate Gite”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2013

We had a 3 day 2 night away break to Carcasonne escaping from work and young family for a wedding anniversary celebration & our stay at La Moneze Basse really made it a lovely weekend. Jeremy was most welcoming and gave us great recommendations for dinner both nights even making the bookings for us. His suggested tours of the area were excellent and especially when it lead to a lake surrounded by forest where we had the most beautiful swimming. His lending of his map of the area was greatly appreciated as we would never have found it otherwise. We had a bonus of seeing the Tour de France zoom through Limoux while there.

Accommodation was lovely and the room nice and cool after warm days, with the simple but effective use of shutters during the day. A welcome glass of local blanquette set the weekend off well. Breakfeast was lovely and we enjoyed freshly laid eggs, home made jams and local cheeses to start us well for each day.

Room Tip: We enjoyed staying on the 1st floor but all rooms looked lovely

We arrived at La Moneze Basse after a marathon red-eye flight and a drive from Toulouse - so we weren't at our best. Jeremy welcomed us with the pet rabbit in hand, and effortlessley set us at our ease in our beautiful rooms, set up a private staircase with windows out both sides of the house onto the elegant grounds. Later we met his wife, Tania, and their adorable son Seb, and were fed a delicious meal in the dining room.

From the time we arrived Jeremy and Tania were amazing hosts - helping us with our itnerary, setting out a tremendous breakfast - including eggs from their own chickens - and just generally being excellent hosts. Both of them speak excellent English, in addition to their native Flemish, French, German and Dutch, so communication is never a problem!

We would gladly spend more time with them - in addition to their hospitality, the rooms were very comfortable and clean, and the proximity to things we wanted to see was excellent. I highly recommend!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Bugarach suite, which had a double bed and a fold out single couch in one room with...

La Monèze Basse is a characterful property in a picturesque location. It is run by a young Belgian couple who have put their heart and soul into renovating this two hundred-year old former wine estate. The accommodation is in a beautifully renovated stone-built property which forms one end of the domaine. It has its own front door and feels like a separate building. We stayed in the largest room (Canigou) and it was extremely spacious with a large king-size bed and a double sofa bed. We also had a big bathroom. Everything was spotless, and the decor was an interesting mix of antique and modern pieces. Generous touches like a complimentary large bottle of water in our room, as well as local nougat and chocolates, made us feel welcome when we arrived.

Guests have access to the terrace and pretty garden, and there are fabulous views over the vineyards which surround the property and the mountains in the distance. There is also a spacious lounge downstairs, purely for guests, where you can read magazines or make a cup of tea or coffee. The property is only a few minutes’ drive from Limoux, which has a pretty central square full of cafés and restaurants.

Breakfasts were delicious and varied, with fresh bread, croissants, fresh fruit, and a selection of local cheeses and cold meats, as well as eggs and yoghurt.

Jeremy and Tania were very friendly and relaxed hosts (as well as speaking excellent English), and they sat down with us when we arrived and offered lots of advice on places to visit. They were enthusiastic but never intrusive and obviously want guests to love the property and the area as much as they do.

Reasonably priced and fantastic value for money.

Room Tip: If you want to do your own cooking, you can rent a spacious gite in the same property.

We booked for 2 days end ended up staying 9 days. The house is an old winehouse and all rooms are nicely decorated and beds are comfy. Wifi with fast connection and coffee and tea facility in the lounge. Large terrace on both sides to either enjoy the morning sun or enjoy the afternoon sun or shade. At our arrival we were welcomed by Jeremy with a glass of Blanquette de Limoux and during our stay nothing seemed too much for him to make our stay memorable. Jeremy is a great passionate host and has extensive knowledge of the area. He set us off every day on another trip with ideas about what to visit, where to eat or taste wine. I am sure he would have kept us going for another 2 weeks. The family are also avid hikers and do know some great hikes in the area. The breakfast served every morning is more than okay, it is one of the best we had in a French B & B. If desired you can have fresh eggs from their chickens. To my surprise our room was cleaned every day. The service in this B & B is like a hotel and the host and his family will make you feel right at home. We felt more like staying with friends then staying in a B & B.
We will most certainly be back. Highly recommended.

We stayed two nights last week and it was fantastic! Jeremy explains you all the nice things that you can visit in the area while drinking a bottle of Blanquette de Limoux! Jeremy also can provide you really good places for hiking!! We stayed in the Canigo room and everything was perfect! The breakfast is delicious!!and during summer you can take it in the terrace! The views are nice and is a wonderful place to stay away of the crowded Carcassonne! We will come back for sure!!

Visited in August 2012. Hosts Jeremy and Tania were excellent. When I arrived, Jeremy opened a bottle of Blanquette and we sat on the terrace and drank a glass or two, whilst he told me all about the local area, places to visit and where to find good walking. My room was lovely, and very well appointed with a big and comfy bed. Wifi was very fast and very easy to connect to. Breakfast was delightful with a great variety of fruit, pastries, cheese and meats. Each morning Jeremy would remember what I had said I was doing the previous day and ask me how it had been, just like a perfect host - in fact it almost felt as though I was staying with friends. Fantastic value for money. I shall certainly go back.

Room Tip: Photos on the web site give accurate impression. All rooms seem to have excellent views.

We stayed at the 'Vent Marin', the holiday rental apartment. It is located on the first floor and provides a bedroom, a living room with a private terrace, 2 bathrooms, a well equipped kitchen and free hi-speed internet. The appartement is nicely decorated and offers stunning views on the surrounding gardens and vineyards.
The owners offer a welcoming and relaxing environment and make it a special place. The tasty breakfast includes a fresh fruit salad, local cheeses and meats, fresh bread, croissants and home made jams. They really make the place feel like home, a relaxing environment in which you can wind down. Some nights they also offer a bbq or a tasty paella, which we would both advice.
Tip : listen to the birds from your private terrace while enjoying a cold Blanquette de Limoux...

Room Tip: Larger parties can easily combine the Vent Marin rental apartment with rooms in the B&B.
