Small family run concern, really welcoming and the young man who makes the automates is happy to show people round his workshop too.

Nice coffee on the terrace afterwards where you get introduced to the family cats as well.

Great to see people just doing their own thing on a small scale with such enthusiasm.

The Dance Macabre must have been written with this in mind. What a labour of love to create it - quite unique and reminded me of the first Cirque Imaginaire in its dark, provocative unexpectedness. I saw it one night in conjunction with a talented contortionist in the courtyard dance a transmogrification from farmer's wife to chicken - quite magical.

We went to the museum one evening in July as part of a summer festival that it was hosting. Before the show began, the museum was open to the audience to look round and we were amazed by the place. I've never seen anything like it - lots of life sized moving figures in all manner of settings. Sort of spooky and wonderful at the same time.

We took advantage of a special €1 each way rail fare from Carcassonne and decided to visit Limoux without really knowing what to expect.
Whilst the town is typically French and quite pretty, there seemed to be little there to extend the visit to a whole day. We had a lovely lunch at a brasserie on the town square and decided to seek out the Musée des Automates which sounded quirky and interesting.
I think we must have walked the long way round and on a particularly hot day, it was particularly energy sapping.
When we finally found the museum, we were entranced by the quaintness of the place and the museum's owner was helpful, friendly and happy for us to wander around at will.
The exhibits are both beautiful yet at the same time quite eerie. A bit like Tim Burton's version of a Christmas grotto!
We watched the video there, and although it was exclusively in French, the visuals were easy to follow, and it was nice to sit next to the huge electric fan the owner switched on for us.
Then he took us to his workshop and explained (as best he could in English) how the automatons were made which was very interesting. I disagree with the other reviewer who thought it expensive. €6 is not a lot really! Especially for a wonderfully quirky exhibition.

Went here on impulse (it was raining) & so pleased we did. Charming & really unusual attraction which demonstrates the automata maker's art. i never really had an idea such things existed so perhaps I should explain.

At the Limoux festival each year they have parades and some of the 'floats' have life sized, mechanized puppets of comedia del arte & fairytale figures. They are made & displayed at this small museum. The craftsmanship is superb & while (a little) disquieting my family loved it. We had to drag our 1 year old daughter out crying as she was so entranced.

Perhaps a little expensive for what it is as you probably wont spend more than 30 minutes inside, but a really worthwhile experience, (unless you're frightened of puppets!!!!)
