“Best food in Limoux (possibly!)”
Reviewed 28 August 2012

Le Lounge is brilliant (although the service could be a bit more cheerful, to be honest).
The menu is varied and very good quality - as well as being good value for money. The only slightly disappointing dish has been the burger (go next door to La Tantina for a burger!), but everything else is superb, especially the salads, the foie gas, the beef - well, everything, really!!
Probably best to reserve a table at both lunch and dinner (opens at 7.30pm for dinner).

“Best food on the square”
Reviewed 28 August 2012

The Lounge got taken over earlier this year by the owners of the Odalisque, which recently won a Michelin award. It's centrally placed in the main square of Limoux, with a lot of seating outside and perhaps 10 tables inside. We visited several times at Easter and during summer, and tried almost all of the menu. During that time, the quality of the food and particularly the speed and accuracy of service has improved dramatically, and it is certainly now my favorite place for a meal for a couple or with friends, and other restaurants are having to up their game.

However, other places on the square are better for children, and you should note they do not start serving (even drinks) till 19:30.

The deal with Le Longe are its menus, which are either two or three courses, with supplements for some of the more expensive items. The menu is cheaper at lunchtime than in the evening. You can order local wine by the pitcher, which and it makes for a very reasonably priced quality meal, usually around EUR30 a head in the evening.

For starters, they have a charcuterie or seafood salad, a selection of oysters, carpacio of salmon, a terrine and a couple of foie gras dishes. All of these were very tasty, but the foie gras with brioche was partcularly fantastic. All of the dishes were well sized without being over the top.

The main courses is where this restaurant really shines, as you'd expect they do a confit de canard and a magret de canard dish. The confit de canard is "fait maison" (i.e. not out of a can) and is the best I've ever had and distinctly different to other places, with a rich earthiness. The magret which came with honey and spices, served with mash - not just potatoe, perhaps sweet potatoe - and a very rich sauce. The steak is amazing too, as is the cod provencal style and the trout. The only two dishes which we've had were not totally fantastic, were the Lounge burger, which was OK but not as nice as La Tantina next door, and the bull steak which was a little too similar to steak for me.

Desserts are perhaps the weakness here. From memory, you can have ice cream, profiteroles (which are huge), strawberries with olves which sounds odd but is really tasty, or local cheeses which are delicious. However, they could improve by adding on another couple of local dishes.

“Food was good but the staff were a little lacking in consideration”
Reviewed 15 August 2012

We visited Le Lounge with two friends at the end of July for dinner. We all had the Menu (starter and mains) and as has been commented on by another reviewer, the portions were very good.

Two of the party had Foie Gras mi-cuit as their starter and said it was THE best they ever tasted. It was incredibly tender and melt in the mouth. On of our guests had the charcuterie plate and was pleasantly surprised at the quantity and quality of it. I had the salmon tartare which I'd had on a previous occasion and thoroughly enjoyed on both occasions. It is served with a nicely dressed salad. And, of course, there is bread served throughout the meal.

For mains, I opted for the Magret de Canard which was cooked beautifully deep pink and was very tender, as it should be. Two of the party had the fillet steak which was perfect - a point and well cooked as requested. It was served with a ratatouille and was well received. Our fourth ordered lamb and while it was delicious, the accompaniment was rather spartan so we ordered a plate of chips to have with it.It took thirty five minutes to get the chips. They arrived when everyone had finished their meal and so, naturally, were only picked at because they were there. And it took two reminders to get them.

None of us had dessert but we did order wine with our meal. For the drinkers, it was very frustrating as it took almost half an hour for the wine to arrive. When the waitress was reminded, she said she'd get it immediately, but it took another twelve to fifteen minutes to arrive.

Interestingly despite the fact that we spend a number of months in France every year and have had no problems in any other other restaurants when ordering in French, our waitress feigned misunderstanding of what had been said. This was very irritating as we can shop, book hotels, order food and drink in other restaurants, watch French (and only French) television, read French newspapers and have been complimented by other restaurant staff and proprietors. And I don't think we were ordering anything particularly unusual.

It's a shame as the food was really good and it's well situated on Place de la Republique in the centre of Limoux. There was a folk festival on that night and we were able to watch from our table. If the staff attitude were nicer, Le Lounge would have been getting a five star review.
