If you want to experience rural Costa Rica, this is the place to be. The people of the community are warm and generous and if you play soccer (futbol), be ready to play! It was a life changing experience for me, and your dollars will be well spent. There are no hotels, shopping, or restaurants, but you will have the opportunity to help milk a cow or two, walk the reserve, and practice your Spanish.

We stayed in Juanilama for three nights and four days in early February of 2012 as part of a one month trip throughout Costa Rica. Without a doubt this was among the highlights of our journey in this delightful country. We were warmly welcomed by our Tica host family, our room was clean and spacious enough to hold our family of five (our kids are ages 11, 9 and 5). Our hosts were wonderfully gracious and even allowed us to use a spare room in the B&B space for us to store our luggage. Our meals were delicious and more than plentiful. The bathroom space was clean and well lit, the common eating area was shaded and offered a wonderful view into the neighboring fields. We felt as if the whole town was working to help us have a wonderful visit. The walk through the Reserve was fantastic, we tried several natural herb/plant cures (such as the anesthetic leaf) and enjoyed a refreshing swim in the water at the base of the falls (including climbing into and behind the falls). Our Tica host family played soccer with us, took us on a pony ride and showed us all around their dairy farm including their own cheese making operation. We visited the dairy facility in Juanilama, learned how they use the milk to produce cheese and then went fishing later in the day with the family that owns the dairy facility. At the end of that day we were treated to a delightful meal of fried talapia, including the one fish caught by our 9yo son! Our kids felt very comfortable though out the entire visit in Juanilama. We were sad to leave and hope we can find the time to return to this idyllic village in the heart of Costa Rica. If you can carve out the time, make this a part of your adventure in Costa Rica, not only will your tourist dollars actually get into the hands of local villagers, you will have an unforgettable experience of the real Costa Rica.

They do not seem to get very many tourists here. Nobody speaks English. It is off the beaten path. We decided to take a little adventure and just show up here. This was one of the best moves. This was one of the most unique, authentic, and insightful tour we have ever been on in Costa Rica. This is not a touristy activity, but rather an immersion into a different culture.

We started the day walking through their reserve, and the waterfall was really nice and refreshing (wear your bathing suit). We saw toucans and several frogs. We then toured the community. Then we had some lunch at a local families place. The food and drinks were things we have never seen at any Soda in CR, but really good. We then went to a local artists house and they painted us a picture of the waterfall. Suprisingly, they didnt even want to charge us! We instead bought a few of their other crafts for sale and gave a tip. Next, We milked some cows (not the best), and saw how they make cheese.

This was a very interesting day, and for the 2 of us, they only charged us $100 (including the meal and painting). We would HIGHLY reccomend this tour to anyone looking for a one-of-a-kind experience you really have to go out of your way to find, but will not regret it at all.

Note: you need to know some Spanish. We are not fluent by any means, but were able to communicate enough to understand and converse with the people of this town, where NOBODY speaks English.
