A little further away from Chania. Very peaceful, good connections, friendly service, located by the beach... If you like to party, this is not a place for you.

The hotel was clean, good condition and comfortable. We were lucky to have a room right on the beach but again right by the pool and reception.

Unusually, the hotel should have been quiet considering it's miles away from the banging nightlife but we still had a few nights without sleep due to the stupid english idiots who thought it weas ok to bring the party back with them and the proceed to jump in the pool and scream on the beach in front of the room.

It's a shame that the hotel staff aren't around to deal with them.
Other than that, the holiday was a great relaxing time especially due to the hotel. The only downside is the supposed "aircon" - It don't have any..!!

The kitchenette and bathroom are good and the maid who is english is a really nice lady and she keeps the rooms spotlessly clean. Staff on reception are ok, but to be fair I didn't have anything to do with them.

Lastly, not sure why they named it Silver beach, its black sand?!

Having been to many of the Greek islands and the mainland but never Crete we looked forward to our fortnight away from routine.
We booked this accomodation to allow us a little more flexibility. We wanted to escape our day to day schedule and just relax, come and go as we pleased etc....that's what holidays are for isn't it? If you agree then whatever you do don't book to stay at the Silver Beach.
It was absolutely boiling hot which was fantastic but, as I've read in previous reviews, our air-con was a problem!
We mentioned it after the first night and it was reluctantly switched on that night. It went off early the next morning, before we even thought about getting up. That was the end of our idea of cooking our own breakfast, it was just too hot.
We casually mentioned it again to Reception and were told in no uncertain terms that we couldn't have it on all the time, that we are out of our rooms all day and if it's too hot we should open the windows!! I mentioned that there were a lot of mosquitos, in fact we had both been quite badly bitten despite the anti-mosi devices we had purchased. We were told to take something for the mosquitos!! We really didn't want any confrontation, after all it was our holiday so we left it at that.
We called the Thomson helpline several times about this. They called the Reception at the hotel and were told that the A/C was on a timer and couldn't be changed. The times were 4pm-7pm, 11pm-7am. So woe betide you should wish to escape the heat and have an afternoon snooze.....no chance....you're supposed to be out all day!!
That night we dutifully left the room after the A/C went off and went out to dinner. We returned just before 11pm, looking forward to relaxing in a cool room before going to bed. At 1.30am we were still waiting for the A/C to come on, we were melting somewhat, when we heard a slight commotion across the way, don't know what had happened but as it was the Receptionist/Manager/whatever she was, had obviously been called in. My husband flew downstairs and demanded the A/C should be turned on. It was turned on at 1.45am....this is the system that is on a timer and cannot be changed remember!!!!
I have to agree with others who have posted reviews that the Management were most unhelpful and not very pleasant at all. The bar staff I can't comment on really because we vowed not to spend any time or money there.
We also had to effect repairs to the shower head with an empty ciggy packet and I have to say that our shower curtain was too short and water went over the floor no matter how careful we tried to be which made it quite treacherous. OK we could cope with that and anyway we didn't dare mention that or anything else to them lest they should turn off the A/C permanently!
So, take heed.......If you see "Centrally cotrolled A/C" on any brochure page, it could well mean, as it does in this case "At the Management's discretion"
On the plus side the Cleaners were lovely and did a fantastic job at keeping the place spotless. We felt very sorry for them because obviously they had to clean during the day, in seering heat with no A/C available to cool them down.

  • Liked — It was clean.
  • Disliked — The Management and the "centrally controlled" A/C

We stayed at the silver Sands at the beginning of September. I can honestly say we could find nothing negative to say about our stay. The hotel was near full, however there were very few families present. We found all the staff helpful, the room was spotless and maid service superb. The village had several Tavernas and a couple of shops etc. Chania was lovely and very easy to get to using the local buses. We will be returning next year for 2 weeks!!

I stayed at the Silver Beach with my mum in June and had a lovely stay. The rooms are basic but very clean. I have to agree with what everybody else has said about the a/c - it's just a heater that you can turn on to 'cold' which is rubbish when it's so hot. We asked at reception if we could pay to have proper a/c but they said no. We left the windows and patio doors open as it was quite windy when we were there to get a breeze. Reception staff weren't very helpful but the bar staff were.

The pool is very nice but hot and crowded - more bearable at the shingle beach but you do have to pay for loungers and there aren't very many.

We went into Chania almost every night which took about half an hour on the bus )you get on at the main road in Gerani and was really cheap. Chania if a gorgeous Venitian town with loads of shops and restaurants. Plantanias is within walking distance (about 20mins) and has a lot of restaurants but they were nowhere near as nice as Chania. There is one restaurant opposite the hotel which was ok, we went there the first night. There is another further up the road which had a greek night one night and there seemed to be a lot of people there. Supermarket 5 mins away. Really is worth going to Chania though, some people in our hotel hadn't got past Plantanias which is a shame 'cos it's really tacky!!

Don't be frightened to use the buses, they're great value (much, much cheaper than scheduled trips) and will take you almost anywhere e.g. Kalamaki beach (lush!)

The hotel was a quite nice base for all of the lovely places we went to on the fab island.

We stayed at the Silver Beach hotel in the first week of August. On arrival the staff were very friendly and spoke good English. We were taken to our room, which was spotlessly clean and only a short two minute walk from reception. The room had a small kitchenette which had basic equipment, a small bathroom with a good shower and a balcony. Our view wasn't great but we could see the sea and some rooms had a stunning view!

The pool was very clean with a poolside bar. There were sunloungers, although they were often reserved by 8am and the pool stayed busy until the evening. However, the hotel is right on the beach and you can hire two loungers and an umbrella for 4Euro. The beach is a mix of sand and shingle and the sea becomes deep quite quickly, sea shoes are a good idea and are available from the local supermarkets.

Gerani is a small quiet village it has several supermarkets, some good tavernas and a regular bus service to Platanias (1.20Euro) and to Chania (1.70Euro). The buses were air conditioned and the conductors were very helpful in making sure you got to the right destination.

There is a land train that offers tours of the local area and a trip to the water park. These are much cheaper than the trips offered by the tour operators and tickets can be bought from reception.

The local town of Platanias caters for the tourist market with lots of tourist shops and restaurants but is worth a visit. The old city of Chania is definitely worth a visit with lots of interesting shops selling jewellery, leather and cretan goods. There is also a huge selection of resaurants to choose from. The bus journey to Chania takes about 30minutes (much less than the aiprport transfer!).

Overall we had a lovely holiday and would recommend the Silver Beach Hotel to people looking for a quiet relaxing holiday, but within reach of bigger tourist towns.

  • Liked — Cleanliness, friendliness of staff, proximity to beach.
  • Disliked — Pool quite small for size of complex and not that many loungers.

We stayed at Silver Beach for 2 weeks in June as was very disappointed!
Hotel was clean and rooms were nice and spacious but:

No air con in rooms - it was controlled by reception who we asked to put it on for us, said they would but didn't!!

The beach was very painful to walk on - no sand just shingle. We were also shocked to find you had to pay reception for the sunbeds.

Reception (or any of the staff) were not very helpful (or even nice!)

The nearest town (Platanias) was about 10 minutes away in a taxi, which you had to go to everynight as there was literally no where else to eat. In the Thomson brochure it said you could walk there - but you could not!

The surrounding areas were not very nice - there was a lot of concrete and un-finished buildings.

The pool had no spaces some days, so we had to pay to go to the beach, which also on the weekend was full. Also if you don't like loud children beware as there were many!!

Overall Crete is a nice Island but we would not return to Chania and not stay at Silver Beach Studios, we also felt that the Thomson brochure was very inaccurate.
