The food was fantastic, the vegetables being home-grown and the fish very fresh, the people extremely friendly, and the spot offers a great view of Batsi, especially at sunset (we were lucky to get a full moon rise behind Batsi, magnificent). They also put a couple of tables on the seashore, you might want to call in advance to book those. The prices are more than reasonable for the quality of the food and as an extra bonus they run an exhibition with works from local artists. Highly recommended!

We have visited many countries and eat from street food to Michelin awards restaurants but first time I had to spend a night in the wc! The fish was smelling and the oil that they use has to be there from ages!!! Please don' t make that mistake!!!! Just run!!!

This restaurant captures you by the mixing of typical Greek atmosphere and the fresh youth of people that manage it. From the paper table cloth with comics to the menu organised as a game, you are introduced to one of the best cooking of the island. All the vegetables, olive oil and vineyard are produced by their farmland. Most of the recipe components are of local production like the excellent cheese. Fish is fresh and cooked so to maintain its flavour. Waiters are young and kind. The final surprise is the cheap price.

We'd walked past Lagoudera many, many times over the past few years, but never, ever gone in. This year, however, friends told us how good it was so we went in one night (it's only open in the evenings) - and went back the next night and again after that. It's beautifully situated, behind Batsi beach with a lovely view over the bay. There are a few tables outside while inside it's like Aladdin's Cave - full of strange artefacts, paintings, and a piece of the Kon-Tiki's rudder! The staff are lovely, welcoming, friendly and helpful. The menu - in the unusual "underground map" form referred to previously - is rather small, which to my mind is a slight drawback but which my wife thought was OK. The food was delightful - lovely salads and really, really good fish. The huge prawns (see photo) in particular were excellent, and the fish was fresh and good value. There's a lovely atmosphere about the place, and we got chatting to a number of the locals.

On the Batsi seafront road at the opposite end to the harbour, a row of colourfully painted pots containing basil, mint and pelargoniums adorn the wall above the beach opposite Lagoudera. It is a small, but perfectly formed taverna, standing out with its unusual menu cards: a sort of cross between a board game and London Underground map, it guides you through appetisers, main meals and drinks.

Angeliki came to sit at our table to tell us about the food and to take our order (she's a sweetheart who also took a lot of time and care over helping a blind couple to decide on their meal). Service isn't super-fast, but food is prepared to order and is well worth the wait. We had some taramousalata which wasn't corporate pink like so many, and was delightfully smooth with a hint of garlic, practically half a loaf of beautifully fresh bread, grilled red peppers soaked in oil and vinegar which were soft and gorgeous, well-cooked chips sprinkled with oregano, and very generous plates full of grilled sardines and fried kalamari. Another evening we had some gorgeous green beans, muscles steamed in garlic, white wine and dill, and a fabulous plate of mixed fried fish.

They grow many of their own vegetables, pick herbs locally, and use locally caught fish - this shows their environmental/ecological commitment. The house white was also very nice and, I believe, produced by them. The clientele were predominately Greek, which is often a good sign. One evening was completed with a complimentary slice of honey and almond cake sprinkled with cinnamon, another with melon.

They seem to just open in the evenings, but definitely recommended if you want a really nice, leisurely meal.
