“Great Hotel Would Go Back”
Reviewed 21 July 2011

I can't fault this hotel. Great hotel, spotless, staff were more than happy to help on every occasion, food plentiful and varied. We did the rounds of the three restaurants. The main restaurant is the busiest. Great for children and teenagers. Tips - if you are English and like your cup of tea you need to hire a kettle from reception. If you want a quiet room don't have one overlooking the pool. Non pool view rooms are fine and are not overlooked by another hotel.

I stayed with my girlfriend in Riu Guarana from the period between 12 to 17 June. It was a pleasant stay, with very good weather.

Positive: proximity to the beach (about 5 minutes walking), the hotel's pool, the food (abundant and good quality), friendliness of the employees, spacious room with balcony.

Negative: adult nightlife in the hotel was poor, few desserts in the buffet (lack the Portuguese desserts), although a large variety of fruits.

In general, I recommend this hotel for families or couples, it's ideal for rest.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view to the pool.

Nelson who collected the glasses at Bar and Pool areas was great as well all the Portugese people are so nice and not pushy . Rooms were 1st class and hotel was spotless . Food was excellant. Entertainment was passable but if you go for a 2 wk hol it is same Entertainment as the 1st week . Entertainment team were excellant and try so hard to Entertain everyone in the budget they have they all work very hard during the day and at night . We will defo be back . Olhos de Agua lovely we quaint fishing village with small beach but ideal on the other side of the rocks is an amazing beach . THANK YOU TO ALL FOR GREAT HOLIDAY

Although we have never stayed in any other Riu hotel to be able to compare it, this hotel was spotlessly clean throughout. The food was excellent and varied. The All inclusive was brilliant cos you could just help yourselves to lager, coke, water etc. The cocktails at the bars were very refreshing. The rooms were of a good size with a comfortable bed. The pool area was nice with a pool bar. Yes the water was freezing but once you have been brave enough to get in, it's lovely. It is quite a large hotel mostly full of Spanish famillies and probably not for those who want a really quiet holiday without children.

This was our second visit to the Riu Guarana and we choose to come back as we found the hotel staff and entertainment team are the friendliest we have ever come across. The entertainment team in particular work so hard all day long, all with smiles on their faces and really try and make sure everyone has a good time. The young adults we travelled with all did many activities throughout the week having been gently pursuaded to and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. My husband and myself travelled with our daughters 17 and 21 with a friend and boyfriend. The only thing I would say is that the evening entertainment was not quite as good as 2 years ago when we first came, having said that, it was still far better than any entertainment we have come across in any hotel we have stayed in.

Not sure if Portugal is always windy but both visits have been quite windy with parasols blowing across on occasions. Very hot between 29 and 34 degrees.

Hotel is on a hill but not a very long one. Not an awful lot in the actual resort but we spent a day in Albufiera which is nice with plenty of bars to sit and chill in.

We all just love this hotel as there is such a lovely atmosphere about it and would not hesitate to go back a third time.

We had a great holiday at this hotel. After excellent flight times we had alovely welcome drink at reception. The staff were very welcoming. Our room was agood size with a good bathroom and shower. The food was excellent tasty and hot. The wine was very good but the bacardi they offered was awful. The entertainment was not to my taste so can't really comment. The location was quite pretty but I would look for a slightly bigger resort next time. Portugal is lovely and I hope to back soon.

We have been to 3 other riu hotels and found them great but this one was disappointing. The food was good and the rooms comfortable. Everything was kept beautifully clean at all time.
Sadly the entertainment was very lacking and very amateur. We were there for 2 weeks and had repeats of shows which was not on. There were times when we felt that as there were children in the audience certain sketches were inappropriate.
Would not go back again.

Just back from 1 week all inclusive at the RIU Guarana. Very hard to find fault with this hotel - it's very, very good (note the majority of negative reviews are from 2-3 years ago) ...

ARRIVAL - After a 40 minute coach transfer from Faro airport we received what I would describe as the BEST welcome from any hotel anywhere I have ever stayed - exceedingly friendly, welcome drink & offer to take cases up to the room!

ROOMS - Not huge, but very clean and comfortable (very firm mattress might pose a problem to some). Air con & a fan to help you cope with the heat, tv with BBC1,BBC3,BBC WORLD NEWS,CBBC,ITV1 plus some foreign channels showing English speaking movies (with German etc.. subtitles) - so in the unlikely event it's chucking it down you can always watch Eastenders! :) LOL :) . The only slight negative I would say about the rooms is that many of them have interconnecting doors (locked obviously!) to the adjacent room (ideal for families I suppose) but for others when faced with a noisy neighbour then that could be a problem (as you would hear plenty). However, our neighbours (like us I hope!) combined consideration with a low noise level, so that issue wasn't a problem.

HOTEL & FACILITIES - Well served with plenty of activities on during the day for all ages, plus the pools (absolutely NO shortage of sun loungers - infact it looked as if there were too many!) were lovely and clean.

The hotel grounds are not extensive in terms of wandering through gardens or such - infact it's quite compact. But you have everything on site within your reach and the main building has a few lifts (tip- use the lift nearest the reception side - it's ALWAYS quieter) - just beware of the lift doors that close rather quickly!!

OUTSIDE - There are a few shops and cafes within 5 mins. walk nearby - the beach at Olhos De Agua is down a hill about 10-15 mins. walk, whilst opposite the hotel there is access up and down steps (are you fit?!) to another beach (and indeed access over some rocks to a huge beach beyond that). As has been said, you can get a taxi into Albufeira (8-10 Euro) new & old town (more character). You could walk to Albufeira, but the main road is fairly non descript to do so, and there is no prom along the front.

FOOD & DRINK - The all inclusive is very good value (just don't expect ALL drinks to be available) - good quality food and choice and something for everyone! If you want to put on weight then go for the buffet breakfast, 3 course lunch, 5 course meal, endless supplies of drinks... - We tried The Asian restaurant which was good (remember to book it!) and The Grill which was good too. No shortage of seats in any of the restaurants, very attentive and friendly staff...

ENTERTAINMENT AT NIGHT - Yes, the team mime their shows, but you cannot fault them for effort - the nights comprised some of the better entertainment shows we have seen in many years. (There is a mini disco for kids at 8.15pm and the team do a great job with them too). Each show lasts from 9.30-10.15pm - they are fine and were ALL well received by a packed (never seen a place so busy) 300-400 guests. Just remember they are all trying hard and don't be too critical and you will find the nights to be ok.

I could go into a lot more detail but I have to say it was one of the best holidays we have had, and the above "possible negatives" would not put us off staying there again!

The entertainment team play a cd that encourages us to come to RIUland - when you stay at the Guarana you will agree that taking their advice was one of the better decisions in life you will make!
