After having stayed at this hotel two years ago for one week decided to opt for two weeks this time.

In short thoroughly pleased that we decided to stay for two weeks as we had a fantastic time in 2009.
No complaints at all regardless of the minor things you may read from other contributors.

Food and entertainment as usual were first class with a special mention to Sasha the entertainment coordinator who delivers a 100% effort performance every night.

We will look forward to returning to this classy hotel next year!

Just arrived back from Riu Guarana today. Cannot fault anything about this hotel. Very clean, staff cannot do enough for you, food lovely and lots of it (too much!!). We booked two rooms and ended up with interconnecting rooms which was perfect for us. It was land view but that was fine also. Rooms were spotless, cleaners in every day.
Pool towels can be hired from reception for 10 euros each towel for the duration of your holiday. Fresh towels given every day at the pool if required.
Entertainment - you can do as little or as much as you want - the team were very freindly and great fun without being overpowering. Night time entertainment was also good, centered around the main bar. It did get very busy and if you were not there early enough you could not get a good seat.
The hotels general manager was always around checking pool, restaurant, reception etc. He would always speak and ask about your stay. We ate in the main restaurant, grill and Asian. All were very good and lots of choice. Wine, beer and sift drinks all help yourself.
No food available at the pool bars, but the grill open for breakfast until 10.30, then lunch from 12 till 2.30, then again 3.30 till 5.30 for snacks, then 7.30 till 10pm for evening meal!! Hence why we have all put weight on!
Olhos D'Agua is about 5 mins walk downhill. Nice for a stroll and we had a couple of drinks there. Several restaurants if you wanted to eat out.
All in all a very enjoyable and relaxing stay...would not hesitate to return tomorrow!!

Having stayed at a number of Riu hotels in the past, all of the Palace grade or above, we thought we would try AI this year. The Guarana is a modern hotel just three years old and is therefore fairly smart and clean. The pool area and gardens were very good and well maintained at all times, but the water was a bit too cold even in June!
The deal we had through Thomson going from a convenient regional airport was very good value being some £430 below brochure price for the two of us having only been booked three weeks before. The Thomson rep was very good indeed and well above average for the Company, but their excursions were very expensive when compared to those which the hotel's own reception provided, a surprising fact given that Tui owns both the Riu Group and Thomson Holidays. When responding to a Thomson survey I made this very point, but to date they have chosen not to post it on their website! So much for their much promoted 'customer feedback' promise and statistics.
Back to the hotel itself we were generally very impressed with the service provided by all of its staff who were as good as any others in the Riu Group. Riu really do put great store into service and standards which makes us search them out every time we travel.
Our room on arrival was fine except for the view over the carpark. A quick word with the helpful reception staff got that changed straight away and we were delighted with the next room offered which overlooked the pools and had a good balcony. AI even extended to free bottled water and a free safe in the room.
We had not been to Portugal before so booked for two weeks to enable time to be taken around the Algarve which was only so-so to our minds! The downside to having two weeks was the AI repetitiveness. The food was quite good for a time, but not as good as Riu Palace graded hotels we have experienced, but this was not a Palace and it was AI. The red and white wine was almost undrinkable, but the rose, beer and soft drinks in the restaurant were fine. The bar service was spectacular and the choice fairly good, except for the same rough red and white wine that is. They even had some well known branded names on offer for no extra charge unlike some other hotel groups. The gin was not branded, but the Schwepps tonic they used was, so after the first one it was very good! Because there was no cost at the bars the service was very fast indeed unlike bars at home.
The beaches were quite a log way down some steps, but were sandy. The animation team were very good and the children had a great time being organised. The same team provided most of the evening entertainment and were quite good at that, and the acts they brought in were not too bad. One evening we were subjected to the Hotel Director doing a very long winded sketch entitled 'Dinner for One', totally over acted and tedium sent us to the bar. However, the Germans seemed to like it so it must be their sort of humour!
One thing which really impressed was the offered tour behind the scenes where everything was very impressive, hygine in particular. With 500 rooms and kitchens to match there was no way that they just cleaned up for the weekly tour, it must always have been the way we saw it.
Due to our experiences in Riu Palace and Grand Palace hotels we did walk down to the nearby Riu Palace Algarve which seemed quite nice, but it would not have been worth the extra few hundred pounds cost (and no AI).
The one downside with our hotel was that at weekends the hotel filled up with local Spanish and Portuguese families who shall we say were not quite used to being in a nice hotel like this. Most of these people were not as polite and pleasant as the other Dutch, Spanish, German and British guests who were there throughout the two weeks. This is, I must admit, a bit rich of me to make this point having got a reasonably good deal myself!
In summary, a nice hotel, great staff in every department, OK food (for a week), good bar service and choice (except for the awful red and white wine), but cold pool water for June.
Only book with Thomson if they give a really good discount as their brochure prices are totally over the top, and do avoid Thomson excursions for the same reason.

Room Tip: Have a pool view as car parks and the street are an bit ordinary outlook. We liked room 105

I have just returned from a 2 week stay at this hotel with my partner. I have never been to Portugal before or stayed in a Riu hotel so didn't know what to expect apart from the reviews on here.
Overall this hotel & resort is excellent. We arrived approx 12pm and were given a warm welcome from the reception team and a nice drink! The bedroom was ready and very spacious and clean, in fact the hotel was kept very clean at all times.
The food and drink was plentiful, all restaurants were buffet service and at times can be very congested, it would be nice if they were to have 1 as A la carte, table service where you could book into it a couple of times a week as fighting to get to the buffet gets a little tiresome. The bar service at night could be improved also as the lager isn't very good and it's more like a theatre than a bar with below average entertainment, we ended up going out to the local bars most nights which is a shame when you're paying for it, I would
recommend a quieter more formal bar as well as the main
entertainment bar. It was my
boyfriends birthday whilst we were there and the hotel delivered
a lovely bottle of Cava to the room
which was a nice touch.
The Olhos de Agua resort is lovely, the beaches are close by.
Albufeira & Vilamoura are also not far on the bus and very nice resorts.

The staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful
We would recommend the local bars Cabana Bar and the Black Cat bar are both fab service.
Overall a wonderful holiday

Recently came back from a lovely week at this hotel, don't normally write reviews on here but wanted to express my happiness :D
we travelled with thompson so luckily transfers from airports was sorted and didnt take too long, and when we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by a porter and a waiter offering all new guests a glass of orange juice :) was very refreshing especially as we had been up since 3am thanks to early flights (we left from stansted)
our room was on the same floor as the reception which was very handy. the room is of an adequadete size with quite a small balcony but we certainly had enough space. the only downside was that our room was directly above the saloon bar and the noise from the nightly entertainment kept me awake.
the pool area is lovely good selection of sunbeds and parasols but I don't think there would be enough during peak season.
For me, the food and drink was faultless. great selection and all presently cleanly and beautifully.
The local town is very small but okay for a little bit of exploration with a beach within walking distance (although this is down a hill so not suitable for those with who dont fancy a long walk uphill!)
the bus stop is within walking distance which can take you to the local towns for a good price and the bus drivers have a good standard of english as do all the staff in the hotel.
The staff are very friendly and keen to help; nothing was too much trouble.
All in all a wonderful holiday

I can't fault this hotel. Great hotel, spotless, staff were more than happy to help on every occasion, food plentiful and varied. We did the rounds of the three restaurants. The main restaurant is the busiest. Great for children and teenagers. Tips - if you are English and like your cup of tea you need to hire a kettle from reception. If you want a quiet room don't have one overlooking the pool. Non pool view rooms are fine and are not overlooked by another hotel.

I stayed with my girlfriend in Riu Guarana from the period between 12 to 17 June. It was a pleasant stay, with very good weather.

Positive: proximity to the beach (about 5 minutes walking), the hotel's pool, the food (abundant and good quality), friendliness of the employees, spacious room with balcony.

Negative: adult nightlife in the hotel was poor, few desserts in the buffet (lack the Portuguese desserts), although a large variety of fruits.

In general, I recommend this hotel for families or couples, it's ideal for rest.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view to the pool.
