“A real treasure”

This place is so wonderful, that you must see it yourself. There are no words to describe amazing atmosphere of peace and friendliness, closeness to nature, solitude.
Quinta has a perfect location, Luisa and Abel are great hosts, the cottages are very comfortable, cozy, full of light, clean, with eye to details, the territory looks like old fairy tale.
In our opinion it's one of the best accomodations in the world.
If you are already find Quinta da Mo and now you are thinking .... Be sure this is a thrilling find!

There isn't a day that goes by that we don't think of this slice of heaven. When you enter the blue gate you can not believe your eyes. You will pinch yourself every morning when you wake up that you are actually in this magical setting. Louisa and Abel are amazing people. We had the good fortune of seeing Abel each day as he is building a new area/ garden to the farm. Thank you for creating this wonderful place for people like us to visit. We miss you both.

What can I say that hasn't already been said in other reviews? We spent five fantastic days at Quinta da Mo, I wish we could have stayed longer. It is an excellent, central location for experiencing Sao Miguel's many activities and sights, and also a place of rest and relaxation after doing so. Luisa and Abel are warm, wonderful hosts who provided us with many helpful tips and suggestions for enjoying our stay--it would be impossible to separate the excellent accommodations from their generous hospitality as the two are so closely entwined.

The grounds, previously a family-farm, are lush and serene with bamboo lined paths, gushing waterfalls, a pond (with a pampered duck), a gazebo, hammocks, lounge areas and a hot tub. Our cabin was spotless and comfortable. We especially enjoyed falling asleep under the stars through the skylight ceiling in the bedroom to the soothing sounds of the waterwheel next to our cabin. Luisa left us a cornucopia of local goodies upon check-in (breads, fruits, butter, etc.)--including her homemade jams--that we thoroughly enjoyed during our stay.

Furnas itself has a lot to offer--hiking around Lagoa das Furnas is one of our favorite memories of the trip. The thermal hot springs (Poca da Dona Beija) are only a five-minute walk away from Quinta da Mo and provided a relaxing way to end each evening (they are open till 11, last entry at 10:30). There are a few small markets and restaurants in town (try the cozido somewhere--Luisa will recommend a number of restaurants serving it--and watch it being made at Lagoa das Furnas during the day). However, I'd have to say the best meal we had while we were on Sao Miguel was dinner at Garajau in nearby Ribeira Quente. Our stay at Quinta da Mo was nothing short of perfect and I'd enthusiastically recommend it to other travelers. We look forward to returning to Azores and Quinta da Mo someday soon.

Room Tip: We stayed in Casa do Engenho. Parking is on-site.

I booked a mt bike trip with Sacred Rides and decided to stay at Quinta da Mo for a few days before the trip started because it was listed as the first hotel on the mt bike tour itinerary. We arrived and stayed in a beautiful, stand-alone cabin. Modern décor, good air conditioning and wonderful hospitality from the owner of the property was all a beautiful welcome from a long few days of travel. Unfortunately, the mt bike tour itinerary changed and we had to pack up and leave this oasis in Furnas. A favorite part of this place is the hot springs just a short walk down the road that are open into the late evening. The only downside might be that there are a few chickens running around the property and the roosters can be a little bit disruptive if you're not used that sort of thing. I didn't mind but figured it was worth mentioning.

After spending 6 nights in Ponta Delgada, spending our final two nights at the Quinta da Mo was the best decision we made on our Holiday. Luisa and the gardener (Abel) greeted us with smiles and open arms. They were more than accommodating and moments after we arrived we immediately felt like family and that we belonged there. From the fresh basket of bread to the homemade jams and other treats supplied in our rooms to the gorgeous surrounding grounds, this is the place to sit back, relax in you're own vacation home. We used the outdoor bbq for our final dinner of our holiday and it was just perfect. The only thing we would've changed on our Holiday would have been to stay at the Quinta da Mo for the entire duration. Thank you again, Luisa and Abel, we miss you!

Again, this review is partly to confirm what others have said - Quinta da Mo is a really lovely place to stay. And in fact we booked our holiday in The Azores partly on the basis that we'd read these reviews. We stayed in the 'big house', which is a converted mill building. The bedrooms and sitting area were comfortable; the kitchen and eating area were on the small side for 3 adults and 2 teenagers, BUT we spent most of the time sitting and eating in the beautiful gardens. It really is a little paradise. Paths and waterways lead you amongst trees and lush, sub-tropical planting to a pretty barbecue area, plus a covered seating area, complete with hammocks. Everything is provided by the very kind and generous owners, and after a lesson on cooking over a wood fire, we were soon barbecuing delicious local fillet steak, fish, etc. Even if it was raining a bit, the climate is so mild that we ate out in the covered area and overall had several rather magical evenings, often finishing up in the hot tub, or at the local hot springs which are a short walk away.

It seems that people don't spend enough time there though! We spent two weeks and there is plenty to do on Sao Miguel, and Furnas is an excellent base. We recommend Terra Azul in Vila Franca for dolphin/whale watching, and also for the chance to snorkel with wild dolphins. We loved that so much we went twice; it really was a very special experience.

Quinta da Mo's owners, Luisa and Abel, will give you plenty of other recommendations; we went to some great restaurants and discovered warm places to swim, etc. Tourism is not particularly developed in The Azores and as a result it never seems to be crowded. The landscape is beautiful and is a interesting mixture of dramatic and domestic - shaped by volcanoes and very lush - but interspersed with neat fields and hedgerows. It was a great holiday.

All we need to do is to enthusiastically confirm all of the other fine reviews that others have written here. These self-catered vacation houses are truly beautiful, inside and out. We wish that we could have stayed longer. Read the Quinta da Mo web site for more information. The owners are charming and very eager to help make your stay pleasant.
