Not only a first class hotel, but a naturally heated thermal pool that is bright orange with the iron content. As a hotel guest you can use the pool from first thing til midnight- and it's just fabulous.
The service and quality of everything in the hotel was faultless….

Stayed here as a family for a short break in the middle of two weeks in Sao Miguel.

The rooms were tastefully furnished and we had lovely views looking toward the glorious hot spring.

Had a couple of hours in the spring - delightful although please wear dark coloured / relatively unloved swimwear as the iron in the water (which also makes your limbs feel incredibly heavy) will discolour your clothes. For hotel guests, you can borrow towels so your own don't get ruined. There are also dressing gowns in the rooms for use walking down to the pool.

The spring at 7.00a.m. was delightful, clouds of steam hanging over the water with silent swimmers drifting through the rust coloured hot waters.

The gardens are magical and filled with lush, colourful trees and flowers of many varieties. The sounds of birds singing is overwhelming.

Breakfast was good and unlimited, and the hotel is in easy reach of the fascinating, bubbling calderas of Furnas.

You don't have to be staying in the hotel to get to explore the gardens and hot spring. You pay a small fee and you're able to explore. There's changing rooms and showers, so you have everything you need as just a visitor. But the water will change the color of you swim suit, so wear one you don't care for too much.

The main attraction of the hotel is undoubtedly the Gardens, which are unbelievably beautiful. The hotel is a great place to relax and hang out, especially when the weather is nice. The rooms are fairly spacious (at least the ones in the modern wing) and are nicely furbished. A couple of blips on the record: the minibar is roughly 3x the price of the grocery store on the other side of the street, while the restaurant, although fairly tasty, is pretentious, slow and extremely stuffy. I'd recommend getting a drink from the bar in the afternoon, then heading into town for a more casual, not to mention cheap, dinner.

We stayed for 4 nights at the end of July/beginning of August and were disappointed with the hotel - principally with its location. Being 500m up in the mountains we frequently found ourselves above the cloud line, or rather we would have done if we hadn't driven off to the coast and the sunshine! Three days out of four were cloudy and wet. Not what we expected in the height of summer.
The hotel itself, in spite of its refurb, felt somewhat stuffy and pretentious. We ate in the hotel one evening & the meal was OK, but nothing special for the price. Breakfasts were no better than average. The room was on the small side and I got really irritated that whenever I went back to the room and put the key card in the electric slot, the wretched television turned itself on even if it had been off when I'd gone out.
Having said that, the gardens were superb.
If we go back to the Azores (as we may well do - the island is fascinating) we'll stay at the coast rather than in the clouds.
