This site dates back to the 2nd century AD. Parts are in remarkable presivation. Also a great deal more of the site is yet to be uncovered. The museum is a must. Entrance part of the first ticket. So hang onto it. The cafe does some Roman dishes and is not over priced. Only Adarna Avellue (not sure of the spelling) beats this for presivation of a Roman Site in Portugal. This was settled 200 years earlier. But abandoned, looking like they marched out last week. For Roman Buffs Portugal is a must.

I am a sucker for Roman Excavations and this is the big-daddy of Portugal's A-list. It fields generous form in its baths, forum and aqueduct with fine houses from the 2nd & 3rd centuries.

We approached the site along the section of Roman Road that led to the city from the east. Just to the left, cluster the outlines of shops, baths ,luxury houses with exquisite mosaic floors. An unearthed villa is built around ornamental pools in superb colonnaded gardens with a dedicated bath complex.

In the 3rd century,it suffered as all ruins do, by having its stones plundered for defensive walls. The informative museum explains the history and the layout of the site and exhibits busts, mosaics and coins. The restaurant is excellent for a light repast.

If you are a fan of Romans you should like the place, where you can see ruins from a small and very old city. I guess it can be improved to what I've seen in Bath and in The Domo Romano in Palazzo Valentini in Rome. I guess the visit should be more interesting with a guide.

My husband and I stopped here on our way between Porto and Lisbon, and it was one of the best things we did on our vacation. The ruins, especially the mosaics, are astounding and so well preserved. Truly spectacular and special.

The ruins are surrounded by beautiful countryside with olive and orange trees and lots of birds chirping. We were there on a sunny, beautiful day and we were virtually the only ones touring the ruins (there were more people inside, at the museum and restaurant). So, it was peaceful and pretty much perfect.

The museum was kind of interesting, but lacked context. I was looking for more information about whether or not everything came from the site and where things were found. The restaurant was pretty good - we had lunch and enjoyed it. They also have picnic tables in a very nice meadow.

I imagine it would be very difficult to get here except by car, but it's so worth the visit if you can make it.
