A renovated old village made into a welcoming small hotel in the countryside of Rethymno - Crete. Stylishly decorated apartments, calm and peaceful atmosphere, just what you need for relaxing holidays. Friendly staff and extremely good cuisine!!!

Suitable for all kind of holiday makers: families, couples or group of friends.

Because of its location, it is easy to plan nice excursions in order to explore traditional villages and find out the cretan landscape, but also more crowded places.

We just got back from 5 blissful days at the Kapsaliana Village hotel.
It is not easy to find and you definitely need a car but the instructions the hotel sent us were perfect.
There is a resident architect who found the abandoned cottages years ago and had the idea to restore them and make the whole into a hotel.
He is a charming man and worth listening to!
The surroundings are quiet and peaceful ,the view is stunning and there is a large swimming pool with a terrace and sun beds.
There are cottages for families, with children but I think I would not take very small children there.
It is 25 minutes by car to the closest beach in Rethymno. It is 1 hour by car from Heraklion and 1
1/2 hour by car from Chania airport.
The staff are helpful and kind and the food in the restaurant is local and very good.
On cold evenings they made a fire in the dining room and on hot days we ate outside.
Our room was perfect, very clean, with a good shower and a little terrace.
There are good walks in the area, monasteries to visit and small quaint villages, and the beach in rethymno is large with lots of small restaurants on or near to the beach.
All in all a wonderful place to recharge your batteries.

Stayed here for a week in September. It is probably the most peaceful and relaxing place we have ever stayed in. Couldn't fault one single thing. There is an air of peace and calm about the place both day and night. Staff are excellent and very helpful. Food is gorgeous, we ate there every night which is unusual for us as we like to explore different restaurants on holidays but every night there was something special on and we couldn't resist and were not disappointed. Kapsaliana is in a remote area and a good distance from a beach so would recommend hiring a car but be aware roads are very narrow and not great quality. So if you are looking for a calm and relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings and fabulous accommodation with excellent service then kapsaliana is the place to go.

Room Tip: Aquarius is a fab room upstairs over restaurant, huge balcony with great view of mountains and sea

Excellent restaurant with local food. We were with our 11 month son, the personal was full for attention and very flexible. The location is outside the tourism flood. South of Creta and it's beaches are approx 1 hour driving by car, some monasteries and nice villages to visit in surrounding. The suite Pleiades was perfect for 2 persons and child and nicely decorated, with beautiful view from the terrasse.
Really great and exclusive location, ideally for people who want a quiet location and rest.

Quality of service is an outstanding feature of this hotel, from the intial booking process, the information provided before your visit, through to the welcome when you first arrive. And the service continues throughout - the girls in the office could nort be more helpful, the room service is unobtrusve and efficient and the quality of the restaurant - its beautiful Slow Food - and friendliness of the staff serving at table. First class throughout!
And on top of all of this is the tranquility of the hotel and closeness to the Arkadi monastary with a wonderful walk between the two. It also benefits from a central position allowing exploration of the Amari valley, West side and both North and South coasts.
All in all a great hotel, made so by the care and attentiveness of its staff.

We stayed here in early July for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The directions (in particular the photographs of key road junctions and signs) were really helpful so it was no problem to find Kapsaliana at all. The room was lovely, with the quietest air conditioning I've ever come across! The inside/outside setting of the restaurant was also quite magical in the evening (listening to the Scops owls gently hooting to each other was a treat) and we particularly enjoyed the special Cretan food and wine menu; it was the first time that the chef and his team had offered this special menu, and it was a great success.

Although we had a car, we took advantage of the offer of a lift up to the Arkadiou Monastery so that we could walk back through the gorge to the hotel. The monastery is really beautiful and the flowers in the courtyard were so colourful. It was also really nice to walk back through the surrounding countryside to the hotel.

We also loved the hotel cats!

Room Tip: Andromeda has a lovely big terrace which is great for birdwatching!

Had 5 nights here in July 2013, booked through Mr and Mrs Smith. Hard to find, but not as hard as the review on the Mr and Mrs Smith website implies. However car essential.
Beautiful room at the back of the hotel overlooking the land to the sea. Had a relaxing stay. Breakfast limited selection but quite sufficient. Same with dinner - the menu could get a bit samey after a few night so plan to eat here maybe 2-3 times. Quality and service perfect but variety a little limited. There is nothing else within walking distance, hence need that car. The pool area is quiet at night, couldn't help thinking a chill out bar with low lights and music would help extend the atmosphere as the hotel has no bar to speak of, just the restaurant. Prices in the restaurant reasonable (£25 a head or so) given the captive market. Overall, a very good experience - a quiet hotel with peace and very much an "away from it all" with boutique class. Staff were excellent without exception. Try one of the excellent massages which are taken in the room. I'm sure as the hotel grows and invests, things like a spa and bar would be added which would make it a 5 star review as there would be no need at all to leave.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Member of the Historic Hotels of Europe, Kapsaliana Village Hotel in Crete offers accommodation profoundly different from any other in the Mediterranean. A holiday experience in a village which has been fully restored with high respect to the history and architecture of this land. Kapsaliana was part of the Arkadi Monastery. The story of the settlement starts in 1600 with the construction of the church, and continues with the creation of the olive oil mill in 1763. More people then came to the area to work on the olive trees and land, and built houses around the olive oil mill which, during the peak era, accommodated 13 families and 50 people. Nowadays, the settlement of Kapsaliana has been converted with love and artistry into a unique hotel. With particular care and diligent work the olive oil mill, the church and the utility rooms were gradually transformed into rooms and suites, restaurant, swimming pool and lounge. ... more   less
