Honestly I cannot imagine there is any place better in this area of Crete. It is utterly beautiful with every piece of furniture, towel, you name it coordinating with the overall feel of the hotel. We were traveling with our 20 month old and they were more than accommodating. Pool was fantastic. We sat around it each day and enjoyed the breeze. They have an honor bar or you can order a bottle of wine from the restaurant. Rethymnon is about 15 min away so each evening we would head to dinner. Ate at the restaurant once and it was delicious but do be sure to visit Avli in Rethymnon.

Staff was incredible and the breakfast was excellent. I would easily stay here again.

Kapsaliana village hotel is quite simply stunning. Every element has been perfectly thought through, to the beautifully restored bedrooms, changing dinner menus and beautiful pool and pool bar. We stayed for 2 night and knew on arrival that we would want to stay longer. The staff are friendly and attentive but not overbearing, the landscape is stunning and peace & tranquility totally unrivalled. If you're looking for a holiday retreat this is your spot.

Rooms are tasty and cozy, breakfast under the olive tree are delicious, nice lunch by the pool, great dinners. No better place to rest, trek and enjoy books. Silence may only be broken by the bells of the goats.

Room Tip: rooms over the pool bar have the best view

This must be one of the best choices of accommodation in Rethymnon.
Staff is fantastic. Very friendly and informed.
Cleanliness and elegance of the rooms at an unparalleled level.
Breakfast buffet variety is very good as well with high quality.
Lunch/dinner menus also are quite sufficient, in terms of variety. Whatever I have tried was superb.

All in all, a place you just don't want to leave or a place you just look forward to returning to, after a long day.

Warning: You just have to have a car. The hotel is in a fantastic, secluded place, which is about 16 km away from the city of Rethymnon.

Living a busy life in London we wanted a trip to take us away from the chaos. We chose Crete finally after flicking through countless mediocre looking Greek hotels and came across this one via Mr and Mrs Smith ( who we have booked through at least three times before.. Always excellent)
After picking up our hire car at the airport we set the Sat Nav as we heard that getting to the hotel may be tricky as so remote. The drive up was relatively easy and very picturesque.. The road varies so keep your wits about you and mind the sheep, hair pin bends and crazy drivers!
On arrival I was struck by the serene beauty of the village- and as we were shown to our room ( Izar) I was smitten forever-clean and very comfortable. It had the most perfect terrace adjoined where we were to spend some beautiful evenings chatting over a bottle of wine.
The pool area was heaven on a stick- nothing but the birds singing, bees buzzing and the intoxicating smell of lavender, rosemary and jasmine. Greenery as far as the eyes can see with the glimpse of mountains and the sea in the background. The village itself used to function as an olive oil factory for many years using traditional processes until it's closure in the 1950s where it fell into desolation. Now it has been brought back to life in the most considered way- keeping its old charm with a modern stylish edge.
We ate in the restaurant every night some of the best food I have ever experienced. Traditional Cretan dishes using locally sourced food and in season. The staff were so incredibly friendly and have the exact balance of attentiveness and sincerity. The pool has an honesty bar so you can help yourself to drinks at any time day or night, and breakfast was buffet style with a large offering. I have never eaten so well- and will probably never do again!
Apart from lazing by the pool most days we ventured out to the nearest town Rethynmon which is great for lunch ( try Avli) and a spot of souvenir shopping. We also checked out Preveli Beach ( a must see) and Knossos ( I wouldn't go out if your way to visit).
I was very sad to leave Kapsaliana and it's ethereal charm- but it certainly delivered our wish for some escapism, peace and rural beauty. Thank you so much to all who made our little break one of the best we have ever had- we will recommend our family and friends to come and stay a while...

Room Tip: We decided on a classic double and were allocated 'Izar'. Great size room and walk in shower...

A renovated old village made into a welcoming small hotel in the countryside of Rethymno - Crete. Stylishly decorated apartments, calm and peaceful atmosphere, just what you need for relaxing holidays. Friendly staff and extremely good cuisine!!!

Suitable for all kind of holiday makers: families, couples or group of friends.

Because of its location, it is easy to plan nice excursions in order to explore traditional villages and find out the cretan landscape, but also more crowded places.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Member of the Historic Hotels of Europe, Kapsaliana Village Hotel in Crete offers accommodation profoundly different from any other in the Mediterranean. A holiday experience in a village which has been fully restored with high respect to the history and architecture of this land. Kapsaliana was part of the Arkadi Monastery. The story of the settlement starts in 1600 with the construction of the church, and continues with the creation of the olive oil mill in 1763. More people then came to the area to work on the olive trees and land, and built houses around the olive oil mill which, during the peak era, accommodated 13 families and 50 people. Nowadays, the settlement of Kapsaliana has been converted with love and artistry into a unique hotel. With particular care and diligent work the olive oil mill, the church and the utility rooms were gradually transformed into rooms and suites, restaurant, swimming pool and lounge. ... more   less
