We stayed here for 5 nights on a short holiday in April 2014. The hotel is only 10 minutes drive up the very steep hill from Funchal airport. (The airport is actually 15 mins east up the coast from Funchal itself) We felt a hire car would be absolutely necessary to see the whole of Madeira from this hotel (or really any hotel on the island!) as the hotel does feel remote and can't imagine that seeing the whole island using buses alone would be easy. We ended up renting the car through AutoJardim (through a third party) who were excellent, they met us at the airport as arranged, 5 mins later we were at their car hire depot round the back of the airport and a short time later given the keys to the car after a thorough and accurate car condition check by their rep. It was a relatively new Nissan Micra with approx 60,000km on the clock with a fair few scuffs and scratches, but overall a great hire car for a low price. Returning the car was just as easy and got the 900 euro deposit back in full.
The hotel is well presented and clean, with a spacious lobby/breakfast/bar area and well kept grounds with plenty of parking. Staff were pleasant and accommodating. Breakfast each morning was a great buffet with plenty of options. I had a delicious full English every morning and my girlfriend had fruits/ cereals etc. Although we didn't have dinner, we did have desserts one night, and dinner looked like a buffet again.
Rooms were quiet, clean and spacious with cable TV, and ours had a balcony. Our heating wasn't working the first night but this was rectified when reported. No tea/coffee making facilities though, but I think this would have been available from the lobby had we required it. I found the beds to be comfortable but we had hoped for a double and got a twin pushed together. (Although this was pretty good at not slipping apart in the night!) But then we did arrive several hours earlier than our check in time so perhaps we were given what was available. Curtains were a bit light and therefore let in a fair amount of light in the mornings.
The whole of the island felt very quiet in April and our hotel too was also quiet, though they had traditional dancers in the bar on the first night we were there. There is also a pool table that you pay for by the hour and a pool/jacuzzi that was too cold... but then we did sneak in 3 hours after the 9pm pool closing time - so maybe they had turned the heat off for the night?!
Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking to explore Madeira with a hire car and I would stay here again. The rate was also one of more competitive that was available.
