We caught the no 81 bus from the land side of Funchal, outside the white fort to Eira do Serrado. Lovely ride via hair pin bends with great views down into Funchal.
Having had a walk up to the view point to view Nuns Valley and then a coffee and a cake, we checked our time table for a bus back to find that not all buses came up to Eiro do Serrado for our ride back. We therefore took the walk down the mountain to Nuns Valley, great on a sunny day, but would not attempt this on a wet day, as the path is shingle and would be extremely dangerous in wet weather. Well worth the walk, but a bit dangerous in places as the path snakes zig zagging down the mountain with very little fencing, one slip and you would be at the bottom before you know it, sensible foot wear is required.
It took us about 1hour 20 minutes. Very quiet in Nuns Valley, just a few shops and cafe's. The bus back leaves at around 10 minutes to the hour to go back to Funchal. Only €3.50 each way per person, so cheaper than a tour, but beware that you can catch a bus back. Enjoy

This viewpoint( some buses stop here) is a start for the walk down the chestnut forests to the nun's valley; a very scenic area but the houses in the village are modern. The is a "horarios do Funchal" bus back to Funchal.

Took some family members here (on their first visit to Madeira) but it was a very wet day as we tried to cram everything in to the week. However the rain had it's up side when the sun came out at midday and created an amazing rainbow that was almost a full circle down in the valley - see pics but unable to get it all in on one photo! Having been here many times I've never seen anything like this and was really spectacular. So don't be put off going out in the rain - as they say in Hawaii "No Rain - No rainbows!"

If you have the bottle to drive to this place it is well worth the effort. The top end of the road is frequently single track with hairpin bends and the likelihood of meeting a bus coming the other way. Having got there, the view is well worth the effort. Absolutely fantastic.
