We stayed here for 7 nights in early May, which incidentally is a very good time to visit-not to hot or crowded. First impressions of the hotel, which is family run, are those of cleanliness. Rooms are spotless and well maintained. Hotel owners are super friendly and happy to accommodate pretty much any request. Situated high above the beaches, it is a bit of climb for those not too fit.
Breakfast is lovely for pretty much whatever you want. All in all I couldn't think of a better hotel for nice relaxing stay in Crete.

We stayed at the Renieris in September 2012, and have just booked to go back in October of this year. I didn't write a review the first time round, for which I can only apologise, but thinking about going back to this fabulous place prompted me to do so.

Firstly let me say, as many others have already said, do not be put off by the 2 star rating. This hotel far exceeds that in terms of the standard of service and the facilities available. It is fair to say that the service and helpfulness of Giorgios and his mum were far superior to that of most 4 and 5 star hotels we have stayed in.

I'll start with service because that was probably the ultimate icing on the cake of our holiday. Absolutely nothing was too much hassle for them. We arrived quite late (10pm) and had emailed ahead to inform the hotel of this, but Giorgios was still sitting at reception awaiting our arrival and was most friendly and welcoming. He was more than willing to offer lots of helpful tips and advice about the local area, public transport etc. His English is fantastic and we also overheard him conversing fluently in German with other guests.

Beware if hiring a car. As the hotel is located at the top of a hill, the windy roads up to the hotel from the main road are unsurfaced and there are pipes running along the side of the road. On turning a corner, we unfortunately drove over a pipe which had a nail sticking out of it......well you can guess the outcome! We jacked up the car, etc. and got the spare wheel out, however there were no tools in the car to get the hub cap off with and we just couldn't pop it. Luckily we were only a short distance from the hotel so my husband walked back up to ask if we could borrow a chisel or something to get it off. 10 mins later and he arrived back down with Giorgios in his pick up truck, who had brought his toolbox down and insisted on changing the tyre for us. We followed him back up to the hotel where he advised us to park up at the fence, whilst he went downstairs. We were wondering what was coming next, when he appeared back up with (what else) but his own pressurised air supply (!) and topped up all our tyres for us. His mother ran and got us some wet towels to clean the oil off our hands and made us a cup of tea! We thought this was just amazing and way above and beyond the call of duty.

The hotel itself is set in beautiful grounds and is spotlessly clean. The rooms are basic but spotless and have a balcony, free wifi, a safe and a fridge. We found the fridge invaluable as we couldn't always be bothered going out at lunch for something to eat, so we bought some wine, cheese, bread etc. in one of the local supermarkets and had it on the balcony most days. The hotel were more than happy for guests to use plates, glasses, etc. and had a basin downstairs where you could return them when finished. It was the little things like this that really made our holiday (and also prevented us from spending money unnecessarily!) As mentioned by some other guests, the pool was a bit cold, but it was late September. It is definitely worth asking for a sea view room - the cost to upgrade is minimal and the vistas are breathtaking. We sat most evenings before dinner and watched sunset with a glass of wine. I don't know if they still do it, but on leaving, we received a bottle of Renieris olive oil from the family's olive grove. This was a lovely touch and I have only just finished it a couple of weeks ago! We were also able to arrange a late check out as our flight back wasn't until 9pm. This was at no extra charge.

It should be said that I definitely would not recommend the hotel to children or those with mobility issues, due to the steps. However, if they weren't there, it would be a couple of miles walk round the mountain roads back down to the beach. We didn't find them a problem, and they help work off dinner on the way back up, but we witnessed another family carrying a pram up and down them everyday. If you are a couple or a single adult wanting a quiet, relaxing holiday without spending a fortune, this is definitely the place for you.

In terms of the local area, there is plenty to see and do. Hiring a car was useful for getting around, however as we discovered once there, the public transport network is excellent so a car is not essential. Buses into Chania are every 30 mins and really cheap (can't remember the exact price, but was only 1 euro something.) They run quite late at night as well. Kato Stalos itself has some nice bars and restaurants if you can't be bothered going into Chania every night. We would really recommend one called Amethystos. It's off the beaten tourist track, up in the old village of Stalos (about a 10-15 min walk from the hotel) but well worth it. It was definitely the best meal we had all week. Full of locals (which is always a good sign in my opinion) and set in a beautiful trellised courtyard. Family run - the daughter waitresses (and speaks perfect English), her mother is the cook and father makes the wine!

Would also recommend a trip to the town of Rethymno (about 1 hr east along the coast). We spent a day here and there is lots to see and do, a beautiful old town and marina. If you don't want to hire a car, coaches run frequently from the bus station in Chania. If you do go, visit the restaurant "Avli" in a lovely cobbled alleyway in the old town.

Sorry for the long review, I just can't say enough how fantastic this hotel (and western Crete in general) are. Book it and you won't regret it. Can't wait now until our visit in October - looking forward to seeing the changes Giorgios!

Room Tip: Definitely pay the small amount extra for a sea view.

Well its all been said, and its true. Stayed here for a week over Easter Georgios and Stella and cleaners could not have done more to make us feel welcome, true hospitality. Hope to get back someday, thanks from Farrell family Dublin.

Don't be put off by the fact that this hotel is only rated as a two star. It exceeds hotels that are 4 or 5 stars hands down. Giorgos with his Mother Stella, go out of their way to welcome every guest with a very warm welcome and they could not be more helpful. The Renieris is a hotel with spotlessly clean rooms, with a fridge, air conditioning and also a safe deposit box and free tea and coffee 24 hours a day in the reception area
The breakfast is excellent with a wide variety of choices away from the main building near the swimming pool so there is no noise from other guests in the accommodation block and bar snacks are really good value too.
The view is fabulous. I had a sea view on the ground floor overlooking the sea and the pool area and gardens are well kept and full of colour with lots of plants and shrubs in full bloom.
The family that own the hotel are probably the warmest people you could wish to meet and that is why so may people keep returning to this little gem of a hotel.
A massive thank you to them for all their help and advice- especially to Giorgos who gave me a lift down to the bottom of the hotel to catch my coach- owing to the number of steps that I would have had to lug my suitcases down.I would return without hesitation to this hotel again for a quiet relaxing holiday- Being only 6km away from Chania it is also very easy to get the local buses into town- which takes about 20mins or so depending on the traffic.

Room Tip: ask for a room overlooking the sea

Very comfortable, clean and well-looked after small hotel. Suited us perfectly. Staff have been very helpful and happy. Beds are comfortable (especially compared to higher-rated hotels I've stayed in). Breakfast offers a wider choice. Pool area is nice. View from the sea-view rooms is outstanding. So why is it two-star ? I guess the shower is a little on the small side and the shower curtain seemed to take a fancy to whoever happened to be in there at the time. It also doesn't have a great deal for kids/teenagers and I would encourage families with anybody falling into those categories to stay away (that will make it more likely that our next stay will be just as enjoyable). :-}
