“Relaxing, beautiful setting, ideal for active visitors”
Reviewed 12 August 2010

Our 10th Greek Islands holiday but first visit to Lesvos we chose to stay at the Aphrodite Hotel, which is located in a secluded bay about 25 minutes walk from Molyvos. Our group consisted of three teenagers and two parents, and we were accommodated in two comfortable air-conditioned rooms in a recently renovated block in the grounds of the Aphrodite. If needed, these rooms had good disabled access with ramps, wide opening doors and suitably modified bathroom. Indeed the low-set second sink was convenient for washing clothes, which died quickly on the balcony in the high 30's heat.
The rooms also had flat-screen LCD televisions with a selections of channels. Cleaning was to a high standard and we regularly found fresh flowers in our room - our maid spoke very good English and got on well with our messy teenage sons! One thing not present in the rooms was a facility to make tea or coffee - you'll need to bring a travel kettle with you.
Hotel staff were as usual in Greece members of an extended family and treated the guests very well. Most of the other guests were Dutch and were quiet, polite and good company. Breakfast is available from a buffet, usually cooked meat, cheeses, variations on egg and fresh fruits - all you ned to start the day. Free wi-fi access also available in the central area of the hotel but signal didn't reach as far as our particular room.
The pool at the hotel was reasonably large, certainly suitable for exercise swimming but perhaps a bit deep for young children or non-swimmers. The shallow end is 1m but it shelves to a 3 m deep end. The water was very clean, no sharp edges around the pool.
Between the pool and the shingle beach was a taverna offering a good range of Greek snacks and drinks, a meal for 5 with drinks at lunchtime would come to about 35 Euros.
The actual beach had a number of free sunloungers but no umbrellas. It faces NNW and most days there would be a breeze in your face as you sat on the beach or in the adjacent bar. The beach shelves quite steeply to waist depth and the rocks can be slippery so foot coverings a good idea, also to avoid sea-urchin spines. The sea water is cool and clear with plenty of inquisitive fish to follow you around. When the wind picks up and raises surf it can be tricky entering and leaving the water. The is wind surfing and kayaking hire and tuition available, also mountain bikes available with miles of suitable tracks to explore the surrounding hills.
A minibus leaves at scheduled times to take you to Molyvos but actually it's not a long walk and we didn't use the bus at all. A steep 20 minute climb which includes a section on loose scrub with thorny plant life takes you to the top of the hill overlooking the Aphrodite and you find yourself next to Molyvos castle ready for the descent through the cobbled streets to beautiful market streets, tavernas and harbour area. Note that you will need a torch if doing this walk in the dark. You can avoid the offroad section with an alternative route into town but it takes 10-15 minutes longer, or catch a taxi. Note also that there is no minimarket next to the Aphrodite so be prepared to carry your sixpacks of water etc. back from town.
Overall a lovely place to stay with teenagers or for an active couple wanting peace and quiet but also the chance to explore. Not so good with toddlers or elderly visitors unless you want to catch a taxi everywhere, or book a hire car. Temperature in late July was high 30's but humidity was also high so the air conditioning was certainly needed. You will be serenaded on your balcony at night by the lovely sound of distant bells tinkling on the necks of sheep as the they chew the cud in a nearby field, and the sunsets are beautiful.

Prior to booking, like most people, we consulted trip advisor to see other reviews, they were mainly positive, with the odd negative comment by those people that clearly don't want to pay very much, but expect the Burj Al Arab when they get there!!!!
The hotel was absolutely fantastic! We booked it through a UK tour operator and although the airport transfer wasn't the most pleasant (around 2hours in a hot bus!!), our experience in the resort was perfect.
The staff at the hotel were very friendly and the family that run it were perfect hosts. They speak perfect English (which is good as my Greek isn't that good!!!) and they will assist you with anything from internet service, to information on what to do.
We had our room maintained and cleaned daily with fresh towels arranged in floral patterns, the supplement we expected to pay for air con & the safe was not charged (I think this is included in the room rate now), the bar, although expensive, was relaxing and friendly and the food served at the Taverna was delicious.
The pool area was clean (although the pool itself could do with a lick of paint!), but all-in-all for a late budget holiday we were very surprised and very impressed.
The hotel offers a shuttle bus into Molyvos 4 times a day, although a taxi is only 5 Euros.
A must visit.
